Book 4, Chapter 196: Getting On Two Coins Isle
After watching the documentary, Chen Chuan thought that he had gained a lot from it. The martial arts master didn’t fake anything and shared his techniques generously.
Chen Chuan pushed two fingers together, and light shone on them. In the documentary, the martial arts master had released a ball of spirit flame and flung it at a wall like a bullet, piercing through it.
That wasn’t all. The interviewer had discovered a Gray Eagle behind the wall. The national animal of the Linacrox Union had its head melted away.
The Gray Eagle was the fastest bird in Oceanland. The martial arts master hadn’t seen it with his eyes, but had hit it through the stone wall, which made it look like he was showing off his skills.
In truth, he explained that this wasn’t just a way to use spirit flames. His mind had locked onto his target. Usually, martial arts masters had a hard time tracking down targets so far away, but this was an ancient technique used by the natives.
The martial arts master shared the details of how to use it. He wasn’t just giving a superficial description either. He actually showed how to practice it step-by-step.
Chen Chuan recalled his descriptions. The light on his fingers began to concentrate. Once he had gathered all his spirit flame in one spot, it contained great destructive power. It also seemed to be able to let him attack quickly and subtly. If he could make use of it well, he might be able to shoot the light through an opponent’s head and end the fight right away.
Chen Chuan tried it for a bit before letting the light fade away.
First, because this wasn’t the right place to test this technique. Second, he had a feeling that even if he could use it now, he wouldn’t be able to do it to the martial arts master’s degree.
It wasn’t because there was a huge disparity of strength between them, but because he needed a certain degree of skill in using spirit flames. He couldn’t immediately master this mental technique, and if he forced himself to use it, it would just be a poor imitation, which was pointless.
But the technique itself was good. If he could gain some mastery over it, it could become a proper killing tool.
The martial arts master showed this technique off to so many people in such a generous manner likely because he wanted other martial arts masters to see his documentary and agree with his point of view, which would expand his influence. Perhaps he could even get some allies.
His goal was obvious from how he had changed his name to Avertowar. In the natives’ language, it meant “guardian.”
This was a smart method of going about it. If he had enough of an impact among the martial arts masters, the Linacrox Union would have to be careful about killing him.
Even though it would be easy to come up with counterattacks against him since he revealed his technique so readily, Chen Chuan was sure that Avertowar had countermeasures in place.
Chen Chuan asked the logistics officer to play a travel documentary filmed in another country to act as a palate cleanser.
Considering the airship’s speed, it would take at most three days to reach Two Coins Isle.
He wouldn’t be able to do any decent training during this time, and if he tried anything, he would just end up burning his energy. So, he decided to relax his mind to enter the fight in his best condition.
Even if it was a spar, Chen Chuan had no intention of just going through the motions. He was going to fight with everything he had.
***
Two days later, the airship reached a large island. It was part of Peaceful Hero Archipelago and had beautiful scenery and beaches, along with a great deep-sea port and a luxurious tourist village. Every year, tons of visitors visited the place. There was also a naval base on the island. At present, the Great Shun Republic had anchored three Eternal Guard-Class warships there.
Two Coins Isle was half a day away. Since the island was private property and had a famous martial arts master guarding it, no airships were allowed to fly directly to the place. Instead, the passengers had to switch to a tour boat.
The entire group from Border Fusion was on this island. Two days ago, Meng Shu had received a telegram that Chen Chuan was about to arrive, so she, Sancheng Huang, Su Wei, and the rest of her group waited for the airship.
While waiting, Meng Shu asked Sancheng Huang, “Mr. Sancheng, what sort of person is your master?”
“I don’t know,” Sancheng Huang answered with a bow.
The ones who heard it were puzzled. Sancheng Huang was a disciple of Fierce Wave School. How could he not know what sort of person his master was?
Sancheng Huang explained, “ Master Fenghe teaches us with methods passed down through generations of Fierce Wave School, and they require him to never show his true form. I haven’t talked to him much outside, so I don’t know much more than any of you do.
“But don’t worry. Mr. Chen is only going to spar against Master Fenghe. It doesn’t matter who wins or loses. They’re both martial arts masters, so sparring will be beneficial for them.”
Meng Shu changed the topic. “Thank you for your help this time, Mr. Sancheng.”
“Since Mr. Chen entrusted me with this, I had to do it properly. This is my duty. You don’t have to thank me for it,” Sancheng Huang bowed to her again.
“Would you like to join us as a proper employee after this?” Meng Shu asked.
“I’m grateful for your care over this period of time, but please allow me to answer that question after the spar. I’m truly sorry to make you wait,” Sancheng Huang replied.
Sancheng Huang had a great time with Border Fusion, but he had been sent to Meng Shu’s side as Chen Chuan’s subordinate, so his direct superior was still Chen Chuan. It was him who could decide whether he should continue working beside Meng Shu.
“I understand,” Meng Shu replied.
“The airship is here, Miss Shu,” Yan Yi pointed out.
Meng Shu looked up and saw a large airship headed their way. After around ten minutes, it stopped before the mooring tower.
A group of armed guards got up and formed two lines along the walkway. A while later, the hatch opened. With a hat and red scarf, Chen Chuan walked out in his ironed uniform while carrying Frost King Saber in hand. The guards saluted him together.
Chen Chuan looked around a bit before walking down the stairs of the mooring tower. Once he reached the bottom, he saw Meng Shu’s group headed toward him.
Su Wei saluted him and cried out in excitement, “Captain!”
Sancheng Huang bowed to Chen Chuan deeply. “I’m sorry for the trouble, Mr. Chen.”
Chen Chuan returned the salute and said, “This is Master Fenghe’s request, so it has nothing to do with you. Besides, I look forward to this spar.”
“That’s what I said to Miss Meng. I told her that you wouldn’t be against the idea,” Sancheng Huang replied.
Chen Chuan turned to Meng Shu. It was November, but the weather at Peaceful Hero Archipelago was still warm. Meng Shu wore a light-blue knitted cardigan along with wide white trousers. Her head was covered by a sun hat with a frilled brim and a pair of sunglasses hid her eyes. She removed them and walked over to greet him. “Lead Investigator Chen.”
“Miss Meng,” Chen Chuan said with a nod.
Just then, someone called out to him. “Mr. Chen, the boat is ready! You can board it now.”
“I need to go now,” Chen Chuan said.
Meng Shu clenched her fist and pumped it in the air. “Good luck!”
Chen Chuan smiled and gave her a nod. Then, he said goodbye to Yan Yi, Sancheng Huang, Su Wei, and the others before boarding a medium-sized boat at the harbor.
“Miss Shu, Lead Investigator has become a martial arts master, but he looks the same as before. It’s like he hasn’t changed,” Yan Yi said.
“He’s different,” Su Wei chimed in.
Sancheng Huang nodded sternly as well. Those who weren’t martial arts masters were unable to sense it, but people like them could sense great pressure from him. Even if Chen Chuan wasn’t hostile toward them, they still wanted to run away.
Sancheng Huang had the same feeling when he was around Fenghe Shou, but it was stronger with Chen Chuan. He wasn’t good enough to tell who was stronger based on this feeling alone, though.
Immediately after the tour boat left, a warship left the port and followed it from a distance.
Azure Dragon and Ocean Development Corporation treated the sparring session with great importance. In order to make sure that nothing went wrong, they sent a warship to escort Chen Chuan.
A group of military officers gathered on the deck. One of them stared at the tour boat ahead through a pair of binoculars. “Our martial arts master is on that tour boat, right? It’s a pity that he’s not outside. I can’t see what he looks like.”
“What is he supposed to look like? He’s human like the rest of us.”
“That’s not necessarily true. I heard that martial arts masters are all tall and some look bizarre,” another military officer joined the conversation.
“Those are all rumors. I’ve seen one before. He was tall, sure, but he looked no different from us,” the second military officer shot back while looking at them like they were ignorant country bumpkins.
So, they’re no different from us? The other military officers were disappointed.
“Who do you think is going to win?”
“Of course it’s us!” the one with the binoculars shouted.
“Why are you so sure?” another one was unconvinced.
The one with the binoculars lowered them and sneered. “That Two Coins Isle martial arts master wouldn’t dare to win. We gave him a way out of the situation, so he has to let us keep our dignity.”
***
Two Coins Isle was full of coral reefs and fierce waves. Once the tour boat got closer, it released a motorboat. Chen Chuan took it to the beach on the southern part of the island.
He then jumped out with his saber and straightened his back. His body glowed, and the seawater that threatened to crash into his feet was pushed back.
He looked ahead and saw two people in long, black robes as well as sabers by their waist waiting for him.
They watched the light around Chen Chuan respectfully before taking a few steps forward and bowing deeply to him. One of them said loudly, “Sir, we’re disciples from Fierce Wave School. Our master asked us to wait for you here. It’s our honor for you to visit us. Please allow us to bring you to our school.”
“Lead the way,” Chen Chuan said.
“Thank you for being so cooperative.” The disciple bowed again before straightening his back and turning to the side. “Please come with us,” he said respectfully.
