Book 4, Chapter 206: Punch Through The Mental Form
When the light shone, Chen Chuan immediately noticed that it was pretty similar to Brilliant Sun, which he had witnessed in Single Flow School’s gap when he fought against the Serene Radiance School disciples.
Under the light, his spirit flames flickered violently. The light also interfered with his mental energy, causing him to be unable to discern where his enemy truly was.
While Xiaoyue Zhai couldn’t win against him in a head-on fight, this could help him conceal his weakness.
It wouldn’t last forever, though. Xiaoyue Zhai had to do something in the next few moments.
His chances of finding a way to win the fight through Chen Chuan weren’t great. He had already tried long- and short-distance attacks on Chen Chuan, only for neither to work. So, he was most likely going to head straight for Hu Kan’s neck, just like before.
This was indeed Xiaoyue Zhai’s plan, because Chen Chuan had body hardening-type refined force, along with great strength and speed. He was too much of a counter for Xiaoyue Zhai. Meanwhile, Hu Kan was a weak link he could exploit.
At first, Xiaoyue Zhai had used the Overlapping Saber to hold Chen Chuan back. Most martial arts masters’ actions required speed and strength, so if he could slow Chen Chuan down even a bit, the state of the fight would change.
The moment the light appeared, Xiaoyue Zhai moved. This meant he was bound to be the first to reach Hu Kan. With the light serving as his cover, he arrived beside his target and quietly swung his saber at him.
It seemed like Hu Kan was affected by the light and completely clueless as to what was happening around him. This time, he didn’t dodge at all. The spirit-flame-wrapped saber cut through the outermost spirit flames.
Right after, a loud clang rang out instead of the sound of a blade cutting through flesh. It was as if he had hit steel instead.
It was Hu Kan’s secret technique—The Body of Golden Armor.
This technique allowed him to condense his spirit flames within him to deceive his opponent. He had yet to master this technique, so it affected his movements in a way that he could defend but not attack, thus forcing him into a defensive position. After all, if his opponent could hit him once, he could definitely hit him twice. That was why Hu Kan usually didn’t use it.
But now, things were different.
He had a buddy!
If Xiaoyue Zhai attacked him, there was going to be noise, which would give Chen Chuan a chance to attack.
Just as he predicted, Hu Kan sensed a powerful pressure beside him. It caused his breathing to freeze for a bit. Then, he heard an explosion so loud and so close to him that his ears rang, and the light that blinded him vanished.
At the same time, he could sense Xiaoyue Zhai with his mind. Knowing that this was a chance, he let his senses guide him and twisted around to hurl one of his hammers in the direction.
When Xiaoyue Zhai’s attack failed, he knew that things were about to go south for him, so he immediately used one of Serene Radiance School’s three movement techniques—Embracing the Body and curled up.
The moment he finished this movement, he felt a fist ram into him. His spirit flames flickered and almost died out, but with the movement technique, he managed to negate part of its power and travel backward.
A shining hammer flew toward him diagonally and slammed into his shoulder. The last bit of spirit flames he was barely holding onto shattered.
Chen Chuan caught up to him, as if he had discussed this with Hu Kan beforehand. Right when Xiaoyue Zhai’s body appeared, he punched.
Boom!
The head of the body Xiaoyue Zhai occupied burst open. Then, the impact from the spirit flames ripped his body to bits.
Chen Chuan narrowed his eyes. This time, he could sense Xiaoyue Zhai escaping before dying in the body. So, he still ended up hitting an empty shell. He didn’t stop after the punch, but tapped on the ground and rushed to the right.
This was because he had deduced that Xiaoyue Zhai was heading for the body he attacked when it first moved.
The greatness of the mental form lay in the fact that as long as there was a body suitable for the martial arts master and they had mental energy, they could continue fighting. It made them a true headache. However, whenever they escaped from a body and gathered themselves in another one, they used up a lot of energy, so Chen Chuan needed to seize the chance and destroy the body.
As he crossed several hundreds of meters in the blink of an eye, he gathered spirit flames on his leg and kicked the waist of the large predecessor, leaving behind a huge hole. Only a bit of flesh was left connecting the upper body to the lower body.
He wasn’t the only one who moved. Hu Kan had also come to the same conclusion and jumped just as Chen Chuan ran over. His hands were clenched tight around his remaining hammer as he swung it down at the predecessor’s head. “Die!”
Boom!
The head caved in and sank into the chest.
With them working together, the body was destroyed in the blink of an eye. A moment later, a semi-transparent person with a saber in hand rushed out to attack Hu Kan a third time.
Since Xiaoyue Zhai’s possessed bodies were repeatedly destroyed, his mental energy was drained. Right now, even if he found another one, there was a possibility that he wouldn’t be able to pilot it anymore, so he gave up on the thought and launched a desperate attack instead.
This was known as the Mind Abandonment. He shaped all his mental energy into a sharp blade to cut his opponent down. If he was able to hurt his opponent with it, he could invade their body and fuse with their mind. Then, he would survive.
The moment Chen Chuan saw this, his eyes shone as he used the Mind Shattering Hammer.
This attack was part of the Observance of the Gold Planet, which he had learned at the Third Limit. That didn’t mean that he could no longer use it, though. His mental energy was as strong as his body, so when he attacked, it was like he had struck the semi-transparent form with a real hammer.
Hu Kan had seen Xiaoyue Zhai charging at him, but he could not pull his hands back in time. He quickly gathered what remained of his spirit flames to defend himself, but he didn’t know this attack, so he got mentally prepared for the worst case scenario.
The semi-transparent form of Xiaoyue Zhai easily cut through his outermost biofield. As his saber got closer to Hu Kan’s forehead, Hu Kan narrowed his eyes.
Suddenly, Xiaoyue Zhai looked like something had rammed into him. Ripples appeared on his form, and he became distorted. His face twisted, and wisps of steam spread out.
Hu Kan thought he heard an indignant roar. The semi-transparent form was still trying to get close to him, but the slash failed to cut through the final, thin layer of spirit flames. It melted away in a bit, and Xiaoyue Zhai charged forward and slammed into him. However, the attack clearly didn’t have the impact he expected. All it did was make Hu Kan feel like a strong wind had blown past him and made a few loose hairs fly.
A moment later, Hu Kan landed on the ground, causing the dust around him to fly and swirl around him due to his biofield.
It was only at this moment that the semi-transparent body’s shattered pieces fell on the ground. The predecessor’s large, broken body swayed before falling forward limply. The moment he crashed on the ground, dust shot up, causing their vision to blur.
Hu Kan gasped for a bit before turning to Chen Chuan’s vague figure in the dust. He gave him a thumbs-up. “You’re this, brother! You’re amazing!”
Chen Chuan gave him a nod. “That’s because we worked really well together. Without you acting as a shield, I wouldn’t have been able to hit him so easily.”
He wasn’t being humble. The Mind Shattering Hammer wasn’t an advanced technique requiring a lot of skill. If he couldn’t predict what Xiaoyue Zhai was going to do, he would have had a hard time hitting him. He was only able to do it because Hu Kan had managed to attract Xiaoyue Zhai’s full attention.
Hu Kan was puzzled about it himself. He was the one beheaded, not Xiaoyue Zhai, so he should be the one feeling sad. Why did Xiaoyue Zhai act like Hu Kan killed his entire family and kept trying to go for his life?
Chen Chuan took a moment to sense the area around him, but there were no lingering traces of mental energy. This meant that Xiaoyue Zhai had truly died.
The martial arts masters far down the path of the mental path were real trouble. Even after they lost, they could run away, then come back for round two in the future.
Things were better in the old era, because only a handful of people practiced the mental form. After all, not only was this path difficult, but it was also hard to find suitable bodies to possess. Things were different now. Zhuan Liang said that there was technology that could create suitable bodies for possession, which gave a boost to martial arts masters taking this path.
Chen Chuan was pretty sure that there were plenty of martial arts masters walking down this path in the fusion faction.
If that were the case, he had to hurry up and start practicing the Blinding Blaze once he got back, because this technique didn’t just train his mental energy, but could also be used in battle. Just like the Mind Shattering Hammer, it was a mental attack.
Hu Kan had calmed his breathing by then and walked over to pick up his other hammer. “Let’s leave, brother. The guys outside should be waiting for us.”
“Okay,” Chen Chuan answered and walked to the shattered bits of the predecessor to pick up Xiaoyue Zhai’s horse-cutting saber. With a turn of his wrist, he flicked off the bits of flesh on the saber and put it on his back.
Hu Kan secured his hammers on his shoulders and looked at the remaining predecessors in the wall. Suddenly, he sighed. “Serene Radiance School’s legacy is pretty good. If Xiaoyue Zhai was half as good as Master Hongfa, it wouldn’t have been so easy to take him down.”
Chen Chuan had heard plenty of rumors about Master Hongfa from Single Flow School, and he, too, turned to the light behind the wall. “Speaking of Master Hongfa, I think he went into the depths of a gap.”
“Who knows? Perhaps the old man wanted to spread his teachings to the weirdos in the other world,” Hu Kan said.
Chen Chuan looked at the bright sky and remarked, “If he was strong enough, he might have been able to. Let’s go, Big Brother Hu.”
