Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 4 Chapter 231: Trustworthy Words

Book 4, Chapter 231: Trustworthy Words

Chen Chuan answered frankly. “I got to know about you two from Miss Fang, then heard from someone else that you two were staying here. I came here to see you two because I have some questions about the past. You don’t have to be suspicious of me. I have something to prove who I am.”

He picked up the backpack he had set down. Once he opened it, he took out the notebook he got from Fang Zhuoying and handed it to He Zhilan.

She immediately recognized it and was delighted. “This is Senior Sister Zhen’s notebook, isn’t it? She left it for Miss Fang as a memento. Yes. There’s no way I could be mistaken about this.”

She turned to He Ruihai and waved it excitedly. “I bought this notebook for her all those years ago. Look! There’s a corner missing on this page. I told Senior Sister Zhen that I could get another one for her, but she said that there’s no need for it and that seamlessness can only come from imperfection. If she has imperfections, it was only right for the notebook to be imperfect as well. It’s been years since...”

As she spoke, she turned to Chen Chuan with sparkling eyes. “If you have Senior Sister Zhen’s notebook, that means that you’re her son, right? You’re Xiao Chuan, aren’t you?”

“Yes. That’s me,” Chen Chuan admitted.

“It really is you! I knew it!” He Zhilan became emotional and raised her voice. “You look way too similar to Senior Sister Zhen. You have the same face and the same neat, beautiful eyebrows. They’re as dark as ink, like someone drew them on you. Your eyes are just as lively and bright as hers too.”

He Ruihai stayed still. While staring at Chen Chuan, he said, “The notebook might be real, but I still can’t trust you.”

“Ruihai, seriously...” He Zhilan was displeased, but He Ruihai shook his head at her before turning to Chen Chuan. “Do you have anything else to prove your identity?”

When he saw how cautious He Ruihai was, Chen Chuan became even more sure that something had happened. Fortunately, he had prepared before coming here, so he grabbed some photos from the old Chen Chuan’s childhood. They were all taken back home.

He Zhilan took them from him. When she saw the people in the photos, she teared up. “It’s Senior Sister Zhen, her husband, and you... Is this her younger sister?”

“Yes. That’s my aunt, Yu Wan,” Chen Chuan answered.

When He Ruihai saw the photos, he finally believed Chen Chuan to be who he claimed to be. The photos couldn’t be faked easily, especially when it came to certain details. The people who knew them personally would be able to tell real from fake.

He put the photos together again and handed them back to Chen Chuan, then asked He Zhilan to wash her face before coming back with some dried fruits and sugar canes. After that, he said, “You won’t mind me calling you Xiao Chuan, would you?”

“You’re my elders. Of course you can call me Xiao Chuan,” Chen Chuan replied.

He Zhilan sat down beside him and asked in concern, “Why did you come to find us, Xiao Chuan?”

“My parents went missing more than ten years ago, so my aunt and uncle took me in. It’s only a few years ago that I found what they left behind and noticed that their disappearance wasn’t what it seemed. I want to figure out the truth, but I’m missing many important clues.

“Based on the records they left behind, I found that they hired a martial arts teacher for me, but they never showed up. Recently, I went to Veshahan to visit Miss Fang, and after a brief conversation, I learned that one of you two might be the teacher my parents hired. That’s why I came here after learning about where you two are.”

He noticed that when he mentioned that his parents had hired a teacher, guilt and regret showed up on their faces.

After a long while, He Zhilan said, “I’ll be frank with you, Xiao Chuan. We had promised Senior Sister Zhen that we would teach you martial arts... but this is a complicated matter. We...”

Hesitation appeared on her face.

He Ruihai took over the conversation. “Judging by how you walked, you must have started practicing martial arts, right?”

“A bit.” Chen Chuan nodded.

“Are you studying under an instructor in a martial arts school?”

“I made it into Martial Valor University,” Chen Chuan replied.

Upon hearing this, the He siblings were shocked and exchanged looks. Making it into Martial Valor University wasn’t easy. Aside from talent being a must, the examinees also needed a certain foundation. For the latter, the examinees needed someone reliable to teach them, because even the slightest mistake could not be tolerated.

“Did someone teach you before you took the entrance exam?” He Zhilan asked.

“My uncle got a teacher for me,” Chen Chuan answered.

“No wonder. It looks like your aunt and uncle treat you well.”

“Yes. They treat me very well. They’re the ones who brought me up,” Chen Chuan answered.

At this point, He Zhilan couldn’t hold back her curiosity anymore. “You’re not even twenty years old yet, are you? But you should have graduated from Martial Valor University already, right? Are you still in Yangzhi City?”

“I’ve graduated for some time. I’m currently staying in Jibei Road’s Central City,” Chen Chuan replied.

“Central City, huh...”

The He siblings nodded. Yangzhi City was a peripheral city and had too few resources. It was also far too isolated. Anyone with even the slightest ambition to carve out their own place in the world had to go to Central City.

“That’s great. Senior Sister Zhen would be glad if she saw that you’ve become so successful,” He Zhilan said.

He Ruihai watched Chen Chuan for a while. “You’ve studied martial arts and went to Central City. Judging by how you look right now, life is pretty good for you. The incident back then was pretty complicated, so I’d suggest not getting involved. This is for you and your family’s good.”

Chen Chuan looked them in the eyes. “I need to tell you something. In the year I graduated, someone attacked me, and I nearly died. Even now, I don’t know who it was.”

Upon hearing this, the He siblings were shocked. He Zhilan checked him worriedly and asked, “Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?”

“I recovered just fine, but the person who attacked me did go after my life,” Chen Chuan told her.

He Zhilan gritted her teeth and turned to He Ruihai. “Do you think they did it?”

He Ruihai frowned. “If it’s the year Xiao Chuan graduated, then it should have been around four to five years ago. It’s been so long, so why...”

Chen Chuan said, “It might be a coincidence, but it could also be related to the incident in the past. Even if there’s only the slightest possibility, I don’t want to leave anything to luck and miss looking into it.”

A sharp glare appeared in his eyes. “I need to figure this out. Some organization might be involved in this, but I’m confident that I’m strong enough to protect myself now.”

“Things aren’t that simple, Xiao Chuan,” He Ruihai said gravely. “Since you’ve graduated from Martial Valor University, you should be at the Second Limit now, right? Maybe in a few years, you can reach the Third Limit, but even if you do, that bit of power won’t help you much in front of them.”

Chen Chuan agreed. While looking at them, he said, “Being a Third Limit martial artist would indeed not be enough. But what about a martial arts master?”

“A martial arts master?”

He Ruihai and He Zhilan were stunned upon hearing this. They stared at him in dumbfounded silence, but when they saw how relaxed and calm he was, He Zhilan’s eyes lit up, and she asked excitedly, “Have you found a martial arts master to teach you?”

He Ruihai sat up straight too. If a martial arts master stepped into this, then Chen Chuan really didn’t need to worry about much. Even if his teacher couldn’t solve the problem, they could guarantee Chen Chuan’s safety.

But the next moment, they saw Chen Chuan shake his head, and they felt disappointed. They seemed to have overthought things. How could a martial arts master have met Chen Chuan and taken him in as a student? It was too good to be true.

However, the next second, they heard Chen Chuan say calmly, “I’ve met quite a few martial arts masters, but I don’t need to rely on them right now, because I’m a martial arts master myself.”

Shock and disbelief rose on their faces. “You... What?”

Then, they felt a powerful, oppressive aura come from Chen Chuan. Immediately, their mutated tissue started screeching at them to be on high alert. All the noise around them seemed to have vanished.

Chen Chuan was no longer restraining his biofield. He released a bit of it and said calmly, “I haven’t officially introduced myself. I’m Chen Chuan, a national-level martial artist, the director of Jibei Road’s Central City’s Defence Bureau, part of the city’s safety policy panel, and a security advisor to the merged space’s military.”

The He siblings’ shock couldn’t be put into words. Their instincts told them that this wasn’t possible, but they could sense their mutated tissue trembling in fear. They felt as if their knowledge of the world was in major conflict with reality.

Chen Chuan soon pulled his biofield back. “I’m sorry about that.”

It was a long while before the He siblings were able to recover, though they still looked shocked.

He Ruihai took large gulps of breath to calm his breathing. Then, with excitement in his voice, he asked, “You’ve become a martial arts master?”

He exhaled long and hard before saying decisively, “A’Lan, give the thing Senior Sister Zhen left for us to Xiao Chuan.”

“But...” He Zhilan still hesitated.

“It doesn’t matter what he’s going to do. We no longer have any right to make decisions for him. That thing belongs to him, so it should return to him,” He Ruihai said seriously.

He Zhilan nodded and went to the second floor. After some time, she came back with a small box and put it on the table in front of Chen Chuan.

It was locked with a password, and it was the exact same as the one he got from Grand Prosperity Finance. He dug through his memories for the password and keyed it in. With a click, the lid swung open, revealing what was inside. It was a blue syringe.

He stared at it.

Another memory drug?
