Chapter 1919: Chapter 1857: The Empress Under House Arrest

Empress Song had never feared Emperor Yan’s suspicion, but the fact that he laid things bare so directly made her panic—was he planning to stop concealing it altogether?

What did he intend to do to her?

Empress Song dug her nails into her palm, forcing herself to calm down. She must not admit it—under no circumstances.

"Your Majesty, what are you saying?" Empress Song’s lips trembled as she looked at Emperor Yan, her voice shaking. "Is Your Majesty saying the crown prince’s death was not simple, that there was more to it?"

Emperor Yan released her chin and stood up, looking down at her from on high. With a cold sneer he said, "You’ve used this face to deceive me for so many years. Even now, you still want to lie to me. Empress, do you take me for a fool?"

Thinking of how, these past years, he had slept beside this woman with not the slightest guard up—had she not, time and again, thought of killing him?

The thought sent a chill through Emperor Yan’s bones.

Had he brushed shoulders with Death time after time?

The look in his eyes as he gazed at Empress Song grew ever colder; he was looking at her as though she were already a dead woman.

The imperial majesty of the Emperor burst forth from him without the slightest restraint; the sovereign’s awe-inspiring authority pressed down on Empress Song so hard she could scarcely breathe, her whole body going weak.

This man before her had, after all, been emperor for twenty years. Long ago he had immersed himself in what it meant to be a ruler; otherwise, he could never have kept his seat on this throne.

Tears spilled down Empress Song’s face as she said, "I do not know what Your Majesty has learned, but I have been wronged. Over the prince’s death, I have never blamed Your Majesty!"

"Oh? Is that so? Even if it was I who killed him, you harbor no resentment, no blame?" Emperor Yan raised his brows.

Those words were like an invisible giant hand clamping down hard on Empress Song’s heart, twisting her up in agony until she curled into herself, gasping for breath.

"Your Majesty, you..."

"Do you dare to swear?" Emperor Yan cut her off, sneering. "Swear this: if there is the slightest resentment in your heart, then let Qinger never find rebirth, forever fall into Avici Hell!"

"Your Majesty!" Empress Song screamed, her voice shrill, like an enraged, maddened she-beast, roaring, "Qinger was your only Legitimate Son! He has been gone for so many years—how can you curse him like this?"

How could he, how dared he!

This vicious, ruthless beast—was he not afraid of the azure heavens above, not afraid of the cycles of Heaven, of never knowing rebirth himself?

Beast!

"Then that settles it." Emperor Yan squatted down again and brushed a finger at the corner of her eye, the corners of his lips curving coldly. "This is the look in your eyes—yes, this is the one. This is the gaze you ought to have, not that false, pretended smile."

Empress Song’s body gave a shudder, and she shut her mouth.

"Rest easy, I will not wrong you. You want evidence? I’ll give it to you," Emperor Yan said, straightening up. "I’ll see you defeated with full understanding, willing in both heart and mind."

He turned and walked toward the doors of the hall.

"Your Majesty, Your Majesty..." Empress Song tried to chase after him, but her body went limp and weak; she collapsed to the floor.

"Transmit my decree: the Empress, grown arrogant through favor, has repeatedly spoken with offense against her sovereign. This is the crime of great disrespect. From this day forth, she is confined to Kunning Palace. Kunning Palace is to be sealed and not opened; all palace staff are to be withdrawn."

Hearing this, Empress Song’s pupils constricted. She stared fixedly at that bright yellow figure growing ever more distant.

Only when clamorous noise reached her ears, when the palace maids and eunuchs were all withdrawn and the palace gates slammed shut with a heavy boom, did she come back to herself. She slowly stood up, then suddenly clutched at her hair and let out a shrill howl.

Ahhhhhh.

Beast— that vicious wild wolf—he would not die a good death, he would never die a good death.

Her piercing screams echoed out from within Kunning Palace, making all who heard them tremble in their hearts.
