Chapter 2066: Chapter 48: A Mother’s Life Is Her Child

Wufu’s fever persisted, and even if it slightly subsided, it quickly flared up again. Over two days, it had worn everyone thin, and the one lying on the bed had visibly grown thinner, her face just the size of a palm, pitifully small amidst a heap of black hair.

Ah Jiu personally held Wufu for her bath, murmuring softly, "You should wake up. Little Bun cries every day without seeing you. If you don’t wake up soon, he won’t recognize you anymore."

With his forehead pressed to hers, Ah Jiu used a white bath towel and gently dabbed water onto her back, seeing the scars all over. His tears fell onto her back, blending with the water.

Sniffing, Ah Jiu continued, "The little guy is a bit picky. Found him a wet nurse, but he wouldn’t take her, so I took him to Aunt for feeding. Luckily, he didn’t mind his great-aunt, or else he’d have starved miserably."

Feeling the heat from the body in his arms subsiding slightly, Ah Jiu lifted her from the bath and wrapped her tightly in a large bath towel.

Back in the room, he fed her broth with his mouth. In these days, since Wufu hadn’t awakened and her mouth couldn’t be pried open, he had been feeding her medicine this way.

A bowl of broth, even managing to get a small portion in was fortunate enough.

Jadeite walked in, gazing at Wufu blankly. It was time for acupuncture again.

"Lord, you still need to take care of your health. Otherwise, what about the Princess Consort?" Jadeite urged, seeing his eyes bloodshot and the rims red.

Ah Jiu nodded and said, "Keep a careful watch. I’ll go see the Young Crown Prince."

The Young Crown Prince, his son indeed.

"Lord, once you get through this ordeal, the Princess Consort will be fine," Jadeite added.

She believed that what Miss He foretold about the Princess Consort facing a calamity was happening now; as long as she survives this, no hurdle will be insurmountable again.

Ah Jiu stiffened slightly, nodded heavily, and after stepping past the screen, was stopped by Bai Xiaobai offering a medicine pill.

"What’s this?"

"It’s taxing enough treating only the Princess Consort, and also the Princely Heir. If you collapse too, I might as well slice my throat first," Bai Xiaobai grumbled. "To replenish energy and spirit; take it."

Ah Jiu pulled a smile, swallowed the pill, and patted his shoulder, "Thank you for your hard work!"

Bai Xiaobai turned his head away. Watching them all worn and exhausted was weighing heavily on his heart.

Ah Jiu walked casually to Zhou Xueli’s courtyard where Lady Liang was holding Little Bun, pacing back and forth.

"Lord," she greeted with a bow.

Hearing the voice, Old Lady Zhou and Zhou Xueli also came out, bowing to Ah Jiu.

"No need for formalities," Ah Jiu smiled, "I’m here to see Little Bun."

Lady Liang handed over the child, and Ah Jiu took him. The little fellow was awake, his eyes wide open, his tiny mouth gently pursed, appearing somewhat aggrieved.

Father and son stared at each other for a while before Ah Jiu returned the child to Lady Liang, stepped back two paces, and bowed deeply, "Thank you, Aunt, for the trouble of caring for Little Bun these days."

"It’s no trouble," Lady Liang said with some unease. "Lord, is Wufu getting any better?"

Ah Jiu stayed silent for a moment, then forced a smile, "She will be."

Lady Liang and Zhou Xueli exchanged a glance, sighing inwardly, how could one just suddenly collapse?

"If she doesn’t wake up soon, bring Little Bun to accompany her," Old Lady Zhou said with a frown. "A child is a mother’s lifeline; with him around, she won’t bear to leave."

Ah Jiu’s eyes glimmered slightly. They say a mother is strongest for her child—could it really be so?
