Chapter 1355: When Servants Bully Their Masters

Chapter 1355: Chapter 1355: When Servants Bully Their Masters

After Lu-shi left Chunhui Hall, she clenched her teeth and headed straight for the South Garden. As she drew closer, she felt the place was in an uproar.

This area was close to the back street where the Song Mansion’s servants lived in clusters; most of the passersby were servants, and their loud voices made it all the more irritating.

When she reached the front of the South Garden, there happened to be no servants around at this hour, but Lu-shi saw a boy in a little red padded jacket, with his hair tied up in two little tufts, squatting in a corner by the wall, fiddling with something.

Her brows knit; she went over for a closer look. The boy turned his head, revealing a thin little face that bore some resemblance to Concubine Bai from back then. When he saw her, he gave a silly grin, drool trailing from the corner of his mouth, making him look even more foolish.

Lu-shi’s expression changed slightly. She looked around; there wasn’t a single servant here, not even anyone passing by, yet from inside the courtyard came loud laughter and high-spirited chatter.

Nanny Zhou hurried over, picked the boy up, and said, "Fifth Young Master, how come you’re out here all by yourself?"

Ru Yi, who was following beside Lu-shi, was about to go inside and announce their arrival, but Lu-shi waved her hand, forbidding it, then walked in with a dark face to take a look.

Under the veranda, several matrons and maids were huddled together, cracking sunflower seeds and chatting and laughing. When they saw Lu-shi come in, they shuddered in fright and hastened over to kneel down.

One of them, a plump matron with a round face, forced a fawning smile and said, "Greetings, Third Madam. What brings you all the way over to this place?"

Lu-shi let out a cold laugh. "What, am I not allowed to come? If I didn’t, I wouldn’t know you lot of servants have all taken yourselves for masters—idling here, gossiping away, and can’t even be bothered to watch over the little young master?"

Their faces all went pale as they noticed Song Lingyi in Nanny Zhou’s arms, and their bodies began to tremble.

"Oh heavens, how did the Fifth Young Master slip out in the blink of an eye? He was clearly playing inside the room just now." The plump matron sounded more than a little terrified.

Hearing this, Lu-shi grew even more furious and snapped, "The child has run out and you don’t even know—what use are you? If anything happens to him, your entire clans wouldn’t be enough to pay with your lives."

"Third Madam, we are wronged. We attend to our duties every day. It’s the Fifth Young Master who doesn’t like us servants staying with him. If we keep him company, he scratches and hits and bites. He would rather play alone in the room. This servant was afraid of him getting hurt, so I let him be by himself. I never thought he would run out."

"You still dare to quibble? I only came by today and immediately caught you in the act. Clearly, you lot are neglectful by nature. Ru Yi, go report to Madam and ask Nanny Zhao to come. Have all these people dragged down and stripped of their posts. Since they fancy themselves masters, let them go home and act like masters there. Our Song Mansion is but a small temple; we can’t afford to keep such masters."

"Yes."

The group turned ashen with fright and knocked their heads on the ground with loud thuds. "Third Madam, this servant will never dare again. Please, Third Madam, show mercy."

Lu-shi didn’t spare them a glance. She cast her eyes around but did not see Jingshui. Just as she was about to ask, she heard a sound from behind. Turning her head, she saw Jingshui standing at the courtyard gate, carrying several bundles of medicinal herbs.

Seeing Lu-shi, Jingshui hurried over with lowered eyes and knelt. "This servant pays respects to Third Madam."

Lu-shi glared at her. "Where have you been?"

Jingshui lifted the herbs in her hands slightly and answered respectfully, "Because the Fifth Young Miss had a bit of a fever, this servant went out to have a few doses of medicine prepared."

Lu-shi’s face darkened. She scolded, "The child has a fever, and you didn’t summon the Doctor? You even dared to go get medicine on your own?"

As she spoke, she walked into the room. From the bedchamber came the whimpering cries of a little girl, and she followed the sound toward it.
