Chapter 375: Qin Yao’s Turn
"Yes...Yes, you did lose the match." Instructor Tang nodded in confirmation with a serious expression and continued after a brief pause, "However, your task was never to win the match."
"This..."
Hearing this, the woman who seemed to have lost all hope of making it to the next stage suddenly looked up to meet Instructor Tang’s eyes, a hopeful glimmer returning in her desperate eyes.
Seeing this, Instructor Tang finally broke the serious expression he had been wearing on his face and informed her with a bright smile, "Congratulations, you’ve cleared the second stage of the test."
"I-I..."
Unable to control her emotions, the woman burst into tears the very next instant as she was soon guided to the other side of the stage by Instructor Tang.
Meanwhile, the entire air around the other candidates had turned from tense to that of relief and hope.
Seeing how skilled Instructor Tang was with the weapons, they all had started to doubt whether they would be a match for him or not.
So, the woman’s results reaffirmed in all their minds that their main task wasn’t to defeat him in the match but instead to demonstrate what they had learned to him.
"Next Candidate."
Instructor Tang’s voice soon rang out in everyone’s ears as the next candidate immediately made his way towards the stage.
Seeing the first candidate pass the stage, the tension in his heart had greatly subsided.
As a result, compared to the woman, he was in a much better state when he entered the duelling stage, as his hand tightly held onto the sword that had been assigned to him.
However, just because he was a lot less nervous than the previous candidate didn’t mean that he had a greater chance than her.
Clang!
Just within the first three exchanges, the man lost his grip on the sword and had the tip of Instructor Tang’s blade hovering just a centimetre away from his eyes.
"Failed. Go and stand over there and wait until the match is over." Instructor Tang said while pointing in a particular direction.
"Y-Yes..." The man answered with a dejected expression evident on his face, slowly making his way to where Instructor Tang had directed him.
The results naturally opened many people’s eyes, as it made many people who had let down their guard tense up as the next candidate was soon called up to the stage.
"Brother Chen..." Zhou Mei called Yi Chen the next moment.
"Yes?" Yi Chen turned to look at her with a curious expression.
"Can you shift places with me?" she asked with an expression of anticipation that was totally unlike what a normal person should be feeling in the given situation.
"...Hm? Why do you want to shift places all of a sudden?" Yi Chen asked with doubt evident on his face.
Qin Yao and the rest who were standing to Yi Chen’s left also glanced in her direction curiously.
"Well, isn’t it obvious? It’s because the candidates are being called from left to right," she answered, but seeing the trace of confusion evident on their faces, she continued, "If I stand on your left, then I’ll have my match before you, and then, after getting selected, I will leisurely be able to watch your match.
Didn’t you say earlier that you’ll show your progress to us during your match with Instructor Tang? I still remember that mysterious smile of yours, Brother Chen, so know that I’m expecting quite a spectacle at that time, and it’s also the reason why I want to stand on your other side."
She explained with a hint of pride and anticipation evident on her face.
’This girl...’
Hearing those words, Yi Chen couldn’t help but become speechless for a moment. When the majority of the people in the crowd were worried about whether they would be able to clear the stage or not, she was here, busy contemplating things that mattered the least.
"Y-You, aren’t you worried about your match at all?" he asked with a strange expression evident on his face.
"Worried? Why will I be worried? I’m clearly more proficient than the first woman who got selected, so it’s obvious that I’m going to get selected." Zhou Mei stated out loud without filtering any of her words, causing quite a few candidates around them to glance in her direction.
"..."
"..."
"..."
Seeing the frowns and irritated expressions on the candidates’ faces, Yi Chen couldn’t help but purse his lips with mixed emotions.
While he did appreciate the fact that she was confident, there were just some things that shouldn’t be said out loud in certain situations.
’I think I finally understand why she didn’t have any friends in her age group...’ Yi Chen thought to himself, and, not wanting to argue with her any longer, changed places with her.
Meanwhile, Instructor Tang kept exchanging moves with one candidate after the other as the number of failed candidates kept piling up, adding to the nervousness in the air.
"Failed."
Instructor Tang said with a stern expression while turning to call the next candidate.
By now, more than forty candidates had been assessed, and out of those forty candidates, only three had cleared the second stage so far.
Such a dismal clearing rate naturally shattered many people’s hope as they prayed with all their might to be able to give their best performance in front of Instructor Tang.
Meanwhile, Qin Yao, who was just called to the stage by Instructor Tang, took in a deep breath to remove all thoughts of nervousness.
"Good luck, Brother Qin! Do your best!"
Feng Min and the others wished him good luck, seeing that it was his turn. Qin Yao deeply appreciated this.
Smiling at everyone present, his gaze paused on Yi Chen’s for longer than usual.
Seeing this, Yi Chen gave him a firm nod. Apparently, that was all Qin Yao needed, as all his doubts swept away that very moment as he soon made his way towards the duelling ground.
