Chapter 403: Going for Lunch
The momentary coldness went away the very next second as Yi Chen looked back up at the staff with a confused expression.
"Uhm... What should I do next?"
He asked the next moment, a little hesitant to fiddle with the artefact lest he damage it. The scene from the first day of recruitment when he had accidentally destroyed two Qi Measuring Orbs was still vivid in Yi Chen’s mind.
"Just pour a small portion of your Qi inside the beads, and you’ll notice a semi-transparent panel popping up on top of the beads." The staff member explained in a patient manner.
"A panel..."
Yi Chen nodded when he heard those words and circulated a portion of his Qi towards his wrists before directing it into his identification beads.
He was hit with the cold sensation from earlier yet again for a little less than a second as the mentioned panel popped up the very next moment. Its size was similar to that of a person’s head and was of the same minty green colour as that of the beads.
In the middle of the panel, the contribution points were clearly visible in black font as Yi Chen’s gaze lingered on them for a couple of seconds.
[Contribution Points: 50]
[Send]
[Receive]
The next second, Yi Chen’s gaze fell on the two other options below, somewhat understanding their usage.
Meanwhile, noticing that Yi Chen was currently looking at the two options below the contribution points, the staff member explained their uses to him.
"As you can clearly see, you have 50 Contribution Points at the moment. If you wish to send them to someone, then you can tap on the send option and choose the appropriate person from the list that will appear on your panel the next moment.
Similarly, when you’re receiving the contribution points, you press the receiving option to allow the other party to see you on his list so that he can send you the required amount."
"I understand..."
Yi Chen nodded to himself while thinking, ’So it’s a little like Bluetooth...’
As he thought along those lines, he was about to thank the staff and move away, thinking that the explanation was over. However, it wasn’t.
After a brief pause, the staff continued on with the second half of the explanation, "Even though this might seem like the main purpose of the Identification bead, it’s not. The ability to store and exchange Contribution points using the beads is only a supplementary function of the artefact.
Its primary purpose has always been to allow the wearers to safely pass through the Illusory array that has been set up around the Sect’s grounds. The one you must have passed through while making your way towards the sect.
If not for these beads, unless and until the Illusory Array has been purposely deactivated, which was the case on the day of recruitment, one will get lost for eternity inside the array.
"I...see." Yi Chen nodded in realisation as he slowly muttered to himself, "So it had such an important function..."
An impressed expression was evident on his face as he said so.
"Indeed, each of these identification beads has been carefully crafted by our sect’s Treasure Refiners, and they all are Basic High-grade artefacts, just a little short of reaching Tier 3."
The staff further explained, a little swayed by Yi Chen’s responsive reactions.
’Oh...’ Yi Chen’s curiosity was instantly stoked when he heard those words.
However, knowing that there was a long line of cultivators waiting behind him for their turn, he didn’t stand there any longer, and after thanking the staff, he moved aside to let Zhou Mei and the rest receive their identification beads.
A few moments later, Yi Chen together with others walked out of the Outer Sect Registration Hall. Qin Yao and Dong Yun were in a good mood, and a similar expression was evident on all the women’s faces as well.
Particularly Zhou Mei, who was finding it hard to keep her emotions in check, finally chuckled in a gleeful manner while looking towards Yi Chen the moment they were a few meters away from the registration hall.
"Hehe, aren’t you a big shot now, Brother Chen? Thanks to your influence, we didn’t need to stand in line as well."
Hearing those words, although the other women didn’t say it explicitly, they also nodded their heads in agreement, feeling the same sense of gratitude towards Yi Chen.
Meanwhile, hearing her words, Qin Yao snorted, pride evident in his eyes. "Of course, who do you think told all those disciples about Brother Chen’s achievements? It’s only natural that they’ll give special preference to us.
"Aren’t you quite cocky for someone who’s just enjoying Brother Chen’s clout?" Zhou Mei sent a glare towards Qin Yao’s direction when he heard him acting like this.
"So what? I can do so since I have the ability to do it as his Junior Brother. It’s obvious that you don’t have that privilege, so you’re trying to poke me." Qin Yao replied with a smirk, feeling great because he clearly saw through Zhou Mei’s earlier actions.
"You!"
Just as expected, Qin Yao’s words ignited the spark within Zhou Mei as the two of them engaged in a battle of words the very next moment.
"..."
Yi Chen couldn’t help but be at a loss for words seeing this exchange.
’Yeah...since they are around the same age, it’s natural for them to be like this...’ he thought to himself as he continued to make his way towards the dining hall together with the rest.
Thankfully, the exchange didn’t last long, and Feng Ning and Feng Min managed to placate the two sides soon after.
"Hmph! Being so prideful for just narrating Brother Chen’s stories to others! Even I can do that!" Zhou Mei showed Qin Yao her tongue in an annoyed mood.
"At least it’s much better than doing nothing like you. Seeing the female disciples’ mild reaction today, it’s obvious that since you had no idea about Brother Chen’s stories, and even if you want to, Brother Chen has told you all the stories of his journey, like how he told me, haha!"
"You! Just wait! I’ll show you h-" Zhou Mei gritted her teeth in anger and was about to rebuke.
However, their petty exchange was forced to a stop as they finally reached the dining hall.
Being the first ones to get their identification beads, their group was naturally the first one among the new disciples to arrive at the dining hall, which was mostly empty, with only a few Senior Outer Sect Disciples eating.
After washing their hands, Yi Chen and the rest left towards the food counter to take their food, but just then he crossed paths with a familiar figure.
"You..." the other party’s eyes subtly raised in realisation when she saw Yi Chen’s face.
Meanwhile, Yi Chen instantly clasped his hands and said in a grateful manner, "Thanks for your reminder in the morning, Senior Sister. If not for your timely reminder, we would have surely missed Elder Hong Lie’s classes."
"Haha, you’re welcome. From your actions, it seems like you greatly enjoyed Elder Hong Lie’s session." She said with a knowing expression while greeting others with a welcoming.
"Yes, I learnt a lot!" Yi Chen answered the very next moment, which made the woman nod in a manner which said such a reaction was only natural, as she said, "Elder Hong Lie’s monthly classes are something even we older Outer Sect Disciples deeply look forward to. However, for us, each of these sessions costs a whole hundred contribution points to attend.
Therefore, while you can, you must treasure each of his classes till the end, as when your orientation period is over, it will cost you a lot of contribution points to hear him again." She patiently explained.
Hearing this, shock spread across everyone’s faces, including Yi Chen’s.
"So many Contribution points..." Yi Chen muttered to himself.
However, when he looked back at the quality of the classes, he could understand why it would cost so much money.
"You guys..."
It was at that instant the woman suggested, "My friends have gone to the beast forest to hunt, so I’m all alone now. You guys won’t mind me joining your group for lunch, right?"
"Su-"
Yi Chen was about to answer but was immediately cut off by Dong Yun, who exclaimed excitedly the very next moment.
"Of course not! Senior sister is welcome to join us anytime!"
"Oh..." The woman was a little taken aback by Dong Yun’s reaction, but reading more into his reaction, she soon realised something and chuckled the very next moment. "Hehe, thank you then, Junior Brother."
She then turned towards Yi Chen and continued, "I’ll be at your place after I’ve taken my food from the other counter."
With that said, she took her leave, and when she did so, Yi Chen turned toward Dong Yun, only to see an infatuated expression appear on his face.
"You...Did you just fall for her at first sight?" Yi Chen asked even though he had already figured out the answer by now.
An embarrassed expression instantly formed on Dong Yun’s face when he heard this, as he said while leaning in to Yi Chen’s ear and whispering, "Well...Senior Brother Chen, it’s just that I’ve always had this thing for women who are much older than me since I was in my teens.
Since then, I’ve had a variety of dreams of older women doting on me. It just so happened that Senior Sister’s face somewhat resembles one of the women’s faces in my dream..."
"..."
Yi Chen was at a complete loss for words when he heard those words and couldn’t help but take a second look at Dong Yun, who was still carrying that embarrassed expression on his face.
’I shouldn’t have asked...’
Yi Chen thought, with a weird expression evident on his face
