Chapter 427: Verbal Exchange
"Huh? Since I was the one who killed him, isn’t it natural that all his spoils belong to me? Besides, who the fuck are you for me to hand them to you? His son?" Yi Chen scoffed at Huo Xun the moment he heard those words.
"Who am I? His elder sister is my sister-in-law, so naturally his belongings should be handed over to me for safekeeping. Moreover, you dare claim the belongings of a disciple who died honourably in a death duel as yours? With all of us disciples as witnesses, do you still dare to say that?!"
Not wanting Yi Chen to keep the items for himself, Huo Xun roared those words out for everyone else to hear.
As a result, the moment Yi Chen heard those words, he couldn’t help but narrow his eyes.
"Come on, Senior Brother Huo Xun, if you say it like that, the disciples might misunderstand that you truly care about Liu Shen. Isn’t the reason you’re raising a ruckus here this sword right here?"
Yi Chen asked with a sneer loud enough for everyone to hear and continued while showcasing the green sword in his hand, "I clearly noticed you giving this sword to Liu Shen in order to kill me. Now that he’s dead, you don’t want this sword to end up in my hands. Isn’t that right?"
"YOU!"
Yi Chen cut Huo Xun off before he could say anything and continued while addressing the Elder.
"Elder Ju! Is there any rule when it comes to Death Duels that states that the winner should return the loser’s items?"
"No, there are no such rules. The winner has absolute authority over the opponent’s corpse and, naturally, all the items that come with it as long as they are on the stage." Elder Ju read out the rules in an unbiased manner while glancing towards Huo Xun, who was gritting his teeth in anger.
"Despite that rule, the predecessors who have fought death duels have never gone so low as to loot the opponent’s corpse, isn’t that right, Elder Ju?" Huo Xun raised a point the moment he heard those words.
"Yes. You’re correct. There have been no precedents for such actions. However, how to go about it from here is completely Disciple Yi Chen’s discretion, and I’ll have no say in that matter."
Elder Ju explained while clearly stating his neutral stance for everyone to hear.
’Tch! This bastard is deliberately not standing with me despite my words carrying a higher moral ground... Fine! It’s not like I need you in the first place! Just those words of yours are enough for me to take those items!’
Cursing Elder Ju inwardly, Huo Xun turned towards the crowd the very next moment and exclaimed, "Didn’t you hear everyone? There has been no precedent of such thievery in the past! So, what if he’s talented? Someone who has a peak-grade spirit root? What’s the point of all that if he doesn’t even have a clean character?"
His words clearly sparked several small discussions among the disciples, and satisfied with the results, Huo Xun turned towards Yi Chen the very next moment, ready to pressure him into giving up all the items.
"Didn’t you hear what Elder Ju said, you bastard?! If you still have any inkling of shame still left, then return Brother Liu’s items to me!" he shouted for everyone to hear while pointing his finger at Yi Chen.
Yi Chen rolled his eyes at the childish pressure tactics and said, "I don’t want to. What are you going to do about it? You bastard?"
"You! Despite everything, you still are adamant about desecrating a dead warrior’s body?! Don’t you fear the Heavens’ wrath, Yi Chen! To think we had such a disciple amids-"
"Blah Blah Blah," Yi Chen imitated him in an overly exaggerated manner and said, "If you’re so righteous about claiming his items, just challenge me to a Death Duel and claim them properly. What? Can’t do it? Then shut the fuck up."
"Yi Chen! You dare moc-"
"Yes, I did! Does it feel humiliating? Then come on and challenge me to a death duel, you sly bastard. The only reason you’re even saying so much is to claim Liu Shen’s artefact, aren’t you?
Trying to hide your motives under the façade of not wanting to disrespect the corpse? Laughable! Truly laughable! If you or anyone else here has any objections, then just challenge me to a death duel and fight instead of preaching like cowards!"
Yi Chen snorted in irritation, placed the items in his storage ring in front of everyone’s eyes, and got down from the stage.
"Brother Chen, you..." Dong Yun, who was standing closest to the stage, couldn’t help but mutter when he saw Yi Chen coming down and exclaimed the very next moment, "...You were amazing! Such Finesse! Such Skills! Brother Chen is truly one of a kind!"
His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear and helped not only calm down the previously tense situation but also made the previously died-out discussions about Yi Chen start all over again.
’T-This...’
Seeing his plan to get hold of Liu Shen’s items shatter right in front of his eyes, Huo Xun was fuming with anger but had no way to vent it.
Although Yi Chen hadn’t displayed much of his fighting prowess in the death duel, the fact that he still managed to beat Liu Shen in a battle of attrition was big enough to make him feel cautious.
As a result, despite Yi Chen putting forward the option of challenging him to a death duel, Huo Xun didn’t dare accept it.
Gritting his teeth in frustration, he left the place the very next instant. As he did so, he took out a Voice Transmission Stone to inform someone about Yi Chen’s location.
Meanwhile, Yi Chen, who had just returned to his group, was not in the mood to receive everyone’s congratulations, as he wanted to check the system store as fast as possible.
"Alright, everyone. I’ve wasted enough time today because of that bastard, so I’ll be going to the library now. Bye!" With that, Yi Chen utilised his movement technique and rushed towards the Sect’s library.
’Let’s check it out now that I’m finally alone.’ Yi Chen thought with a grin as he headed to the Sect’s library and opened his status panel while at it.
