Chapter 480 - 479: More Money Than Sense

Chapter 480: Chapter 479: More Money Than Sense

"They say revenge is a dish best served cold, but getting it right away feels so damn good! HAHAHA..."

"Seeing that bastard getting dragged away by security... so satisfying..."

Zhao Xiaoting vented her excitement by jumping up and down a few times. Then, a thought suddenly struck her, and she asked with great interest, "Mr. Yan, how did you convince Mrs. Chu?"

"When she was leaving with Shao Jun and Nie Yifan, why did she make a point to turn around and glare at you?"

Yan Feifan met Zhao Xiaoting’s probing gaze and said casually, "It’s quite simple. There are really only two ways to quickly convince someone: threats or bribes."

"I didn’t have anything to bribe her with, so I had to resort to threats."

Zhao Xiaoting shook Yan Feifan’s arm like a child, urging, "Come on, tell me! How did you threaten her?"

Yan Feifan shook his arm free and continued, "I just told her that I believed you."

"If she didn’t help this time, I’d secretly gather evidence of Cao Yan’s misdeeds and leak it right as the series finished filming and was about to air."

"And then we’d see who stands to lose more."

Realization dawned on Zhao Xiaoting, and she said with a grin, "A dog can’t be taught not to eat shit. Finding dirt on that bastard must be a piece of cake."

"Mrs. Chu wouldn’t want her whole show to be ruined, so she was bound to investigate that bastard’s character."

"Oh..."

Zhao Xiaoting then asked excitedly, "Mr. Yan, how were you so sure Nie Yifan would betray him if a better offer came along?"

Yan Feifan shot Zhao Xiaoting a disdainful look and snorted. "I’ve heard that friendship and loyalty are meaningless to most celebrities."

"As long as the price is right, betrayal is just a heartbeat away."

"I was just testing the waters, taking a gamble. I didn’t expect..."

At this, Yan Feifan let out a long, feigned sigh of disappointment.

In reality, Yan Feifan had taken that gamble because he had a better grasp of the situation.

While he was confronting Cao Yan, he had also been secretly observing the reactions of Shao Jun and Nie Yifan to prepare his next move.

Yan Feifan noticed that Shao Jun was very composed, as if he were content to just watch how things played out.

Nie Yifan’s reaction, on the other hand, was far more interesting.

While Cao Yan was making excuses for himself, an expression of contempt and mockery flashed across Nie Yifan’s face.

Although the expression was fleeting, Yan Feifan’s sharp perception caught it.

So when Cao Yan said that Nie Yifan could vouch for him, Yan Feifan decided the gamble was worth taking.

Of course, the fact that Nie Yifan had secretly recorded the conversation was something Yan Feifan hadn’t anticipated at all...

Just then, Zhao Xiaoting argued, "The entertainment industry is full of temptation, but opportunities to make it big are scarce. It’s true, there have been plenty of betrayals and backstabbings."

"But not everyone is like that."

"At least, I’m not."

Zhao Xiaoting said with a solemn expression, "Mr. Yan, I, Zhao Xiaoting, will be a friend you can trust for the rest of your life."

Yan Feifan rolled his eyes. "Don’t use the word ’friend.’ I’m allergic to it right now."

"How many people have lost the shirts off their backs because they were stabbed in the back by their so-called friends?"

"We just saw a perfect example of that."

Zhao Xiaoting giggled and said, "Well, I, Zhao Xiaoting, am an exceptionally cute girl you can absolutely trust."

She raised her right hand. "Mr. Yan, I swear..."

"Don’t make any vows. It’s a nice evening, and it’d be a shame if you summoned a thunderstorm."

Yan Feifan cut her off and asked, "Is that scriptwriter, Mrs. Chu, famous in your industry?"

Zhao Xiaoting pouted, lowering her hand. "The three urban idol drama scripts she wrote—*Last Train*, *Shallow Fate, Deep Love*, and *Little Attic on the Rooftop*—have all been put on screen. They all got pretty decent ratings, so yeah, she’s quite impressive."

"Mr. Yan, have you seen any of them?"

Yan Feifan thought for a moment, then shook his head. "Can’t say I have."

"Judging by her age and appearance, I’m guessing her scripts are melodramas about handsome guys and beautiful girls falling in love, being forced apart, and suffering from unrequited love, right?"

Zhao Xiaoting giggled. "You guessed it, Mr. Yan. That’s pretty much what they’re like."

Yan Feifan chuckled. "Life is already tiring and bitter enough. My family prefers to watch lighthearted, happy shows..."

Just then, Mr. Gao came over and invited Zhao Xiaoting to play a small, three-episode role over the next few days.

Zhao Xiaoting happily accepted.

The three of them chatted for a bit more, and the topic turned to television genres.

Yan Feifan couldn’t help but ask, "Medical dramas are an evergreen genre in other countries. Why are so few produced here, and why do the ones that get made lack that professional, authentic feel?"

Mr. Gao explained, "There are many reasons, but there are two main ones. First, medical dramas are expensive to produce."

"To cut costs, many scenes involving professional equipment, medical examinations, and surgeries are simplified or cut entirely."

"But the biggest reason is the existence of the ’big scissors’—censorship."

Mr. Gao pointed upward and sighed. "The censors don’t allow overly gory scenes in film and television."

"This prevents us from showing many realistic and professionally accurate medical procedures."

"On top of that, a lot of sensitive subject matter is off-limits."

"And those sensitive stories or bizarre cases you get from patients are the biggest draw for a medical drama."

"If you can’t film that, all you’re left with is family squabbles and romance to fill the runtime."

"And if that’s all you’re filming, you might as well drop the medical ’skin’ altogether."

As he spoke, Mr. Gao’s eyes suddenly lit up. He looked at Yan Feifan and said, "Mr. Yan, your own experiences are quite legendary. And there are so many stories to be mined from the field of cosmetic surgery."

"Mr. Yan, would you be interested in adapting your life story into a highly professional medical drama about cosmetic surgery?"

Yan Feifan shook his head in refusal. "No, thanks. I’m still young; I don’t have enough stories to make a show."

"Ask me again in ten or twenty years."

It was just a passing thought for Mr. Gao, so when he saw Yan Feifan wasn’t interested, he let the matter drop.

After a few more minutes of small talk, the three went their separate ways.

For Mr. Gao and Zhao Xiaoting, the cocktail party was a great networking opportunity, and not a moment was to be wasted.

Left all by his lonesome, Yan Feifan found himself with nothing to do. He found a seat in a lounge area and sat down.

He took out his phone and found an email from Dr. Kevin Vega in the United States.

He opened it to find the medical file for a patient with a brain tumor.

Yan Feifan quickly scanned the information on the patient’s tumor and felt a pang of doubt.

’Did this guy send me the wrong file?’

The patient’s brain tumor wasn’t complex—in fact, it was almost too simple. With Mr. Vega’s skills, performing this surgery alone wouldn’t be much of a challenge. Whether Yan Feifan was there or not would make little difference.

Yan Feifan quickly sent a reply to confirm.

Less than a minute after he sent the email, he received an international call from Dr. Kevin Vega.

"Mr. Yan, hello!"

"I sent the medical file myself; it’s the correct one."

Mr. Vega explained over the phone, "The patient is a well-known investor from Wall Street."

"He’s extremely worried that the brain surgery will impact his analytical and decision-making abilities."

"Therefore, he’s demanding that we exert every possible effort to ensure the surgery is a complete success, with absolutely no side effects."

"To use one of your local expressions, he’s got more money than sense..."
