Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 512 - 511: Don’t Overthink It

Chapter 512: Chapter 511: Don’t Overthink It

Yan Feifan once again compared the manuscripts’ current position to his memory of how he had last left them. He confirmed they had indeed been moved.

He recalled the time Yu Youlian had told him a corporate spy had infiltrated the tech company to steal R&D data for the surgical robot. She had specifically warned him to be careful, as he might become a target too.

Ever since then, Yan Feifan had been extra cautious.

He had arranged the manuscripts with a few inconspicuous little details that only he could recognize.

Now, every one of those little details had been altered.

’If a meticulous thief had broken in and stolen any valuables,’ Yan Feifan thought, ’my sister and Su Ye would have told me the second I walked through the door.’

Du Qiu hadn’t been in for a few days. When she came in today to do a thorough cleaning, she would have only moved the desk and chairs, not his manuscripts.

’In other words, this intruder’s target was these manuscripts?’

’Or were they after me?’

Yan Feifan backed away from his desk and scanned the bedroom carefully.

He hadn’t noticed it before, but now that he was looking, he was shocked.

Although the bedroom was as neat and clean as ever, his eyes picked up numerous traces of things that had been disturbed and then meticulously put back.

’Zeng Ni?’

The thought barely crossed his mind before he dismissed it.

Given her personality and the lazy way she tidied up the guest room, there was no way she could have restored everything to its original state so perfectly.

A profound sense of unease washed over Yan Feifan.

He fought the urge to tell his sister and Su Ye, not wanting to frighten them.

After a moment’s thought, Yan Feifan took his phone to the attic terrace and dialed the number of Zheng Libing, the captain of the district’s criminal investigation team.

As soon as the call connected, he got straight to the point. "Mr. Zheng, I think a spy may have infiltrated my room."

"A spy?"

Zheng Libing’s voice was laced with astonishment, but it quickly turned serious. "Mr. Yan, what happened exactly?"

"Tell me everything."

Yan Feifan gathered his thoughts. "Mr. Zheng, I haven’t been home in four days. I just got back tonight and was about to do some work."

"But I discovered that my manuscripts and my room had been searched, and then someone carefully tried to put everything back the way it was."

"But I’m certain they were disturbed."

Zheng Libing’s voice cut in. "Is anything missing? Any valuables?"

Yan Feifan answered quietly, "I haven’t found anything missing yet."

"But those manuscripts contain crucial data for Baining Medical Technology’s surgical robot database. Their value is hard to estimate."

Zheng Libing made an instant decision. "Mr. Yan, I understand. I’ll bring a team over right away—"

"Not just yet!"

Yan Feifan cut him off. "Mr. Zheng, please wait until tomorrow, after we’ve all left for work."

"I don’t want to alarm my family."

Yan Feifan added a reminder, "Mr. Zheng, when you do come, could you also check if they’ve planted any cameras or listening devices in my room?"

"Right, I’ll be sure to check."

After replying, Zheng Libing changed the subject. "Mr. Yan, based on our current investigation into the Yv Yunzhi hijacking incident, it seems he planned the entire thing himself."

"We’ve found no evidence that Cao Ke, Pan Hong, and the third person knew about Yv Yunzhi’s plan."

Yan Feifan said, "Oh. If he’s the only bad guy, that’s the best possible outcome..."

After ending his call with Zheng Libing, Yan Feifan came down from the attic.

As he passed through the living room, his sister, who was chatting and watching TV with Zeng Ni and Yu Suye, called out to him.

"Running off to the attic alone with your phone... Feifan, you’re looking a little sneaky."

"I was discussing a private matter with a patient’s family."

Yan Feifan explained casually, then turned to Zeng Ni to change the subject. "So, Zeng Ni, you’re not planning on making a career out of being a middleman, are you?"

Zeng Ni said haughtily, "Of course not!"

"I’m just doing this to earn a little spending money. It’s not my fault all my savings got wiped out by a scammer."

She put on a miserable expression. "This life of begging for handouts is tough. I want to find something legitimate to do, like start a company or something."

"I just don’t have any good ideas."

Yan Feifan scoffed. "With your family’s connections, you can’t find a way to make money?"

Zeng Ni huffed. "None that are right for me."

"I want a project that doesn’t require a huge investment, and it has to be something I’m interested in."

"Feifan, do you have any ideas? If you do, you provide the idea, I’ll provide the money and manpower, and we can make a fortune together!"

Yan Feifan rolled his eyes and teased, "If I had a great idea, why would I give it to you?"

But as he said it, an idea actually came to him.

"Zeng Ni, I do have a little idea, actually. Let’s see if you’re interested."

"What is it?" Zeng Ni asked eagerly.

Yan Feifan chuckled. "You know how on those short video apps, you always see funny clips of guys trying to hide their secret stashes of cash from their wives, only to get caught?"

"You could start a creative studio that designs and custom-makes items that look like regular household goods, but are actually designed for hiding that secret cash."

"It’s a creative business idea."

"The designs would have to be really clever and plausible..."

Seeing Zeng Ni prop her chin on her hand, lost in thought, Yan Feifan added, "The market probably isn’t huge. But if your product designs are good—real eye-catchers—it’s definitely possible that any married man who sees them would pick one or two up on impulse."

Zeng Ni’s eyes crinkled with a smile as she glanced at Yu Suye and Yan Ziruo beside her, then back at Yan Feifan. "That’s a fantastic idea."

"Feifan, how did you come up with that? Are Su Ye and Ruoruo really strict about how you spend your money?"

Yan Feifan scoffed and declared magnanimously, "If I want to spend money, who’s going to stop me—"

Noticing his sister’s gaze suddenly turn sharp, he quickly changed his tune. "I’ve got work to do. I’ll stop chatting with you guys..."

Yan Feifan only managed to finish one diagram for a tumor puncture injection that night before his sister supervised him into bed.

But lying in the darkness of his bedroom, he couldn’t shake the feeling that a pair of invisible eyes were watching him.

It scared him so much that he wasn’t the least bit sleepy.

Even the hypnotic sound of pattering rain he played by his ear did little to help.

It made him realize something.

When overriding emotions like fear and anxiety were keeping him awake, the hypnotic effect of the rain was greatly diminished.

In other words, the rain sounds could only assist with sleep; they weren’t a cure-all.

After tossing and turning a few more times, Yan Feifan finally got out of bed.

He grabbed his pillow, left his bedroom, and, guided by the dim glow of a nightlight, tiptoed across the living room and up to the attic.

Yan Feifan entered the attic’s inner bedroom. In the faint light, he saw the figure on the bed stir.

"I’m a little scared. I’m just here to sleep, so don’t get the wrong idea."

The person on the bed stifled a laugh, shifted to the side, and said in a sweet voice, "Alright."

"Come on, little Feifan, come sleep with me. I’ll even tell you a bedtime story about the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood."

Yan Feifan snorted softly, put his pillow down, and lay on the bed...

A moment later, a small, plaintive voice sounded in the darkness.

"He really fell asleep!"

"You jerk... you really did just come here to sleep..."
