Chapter 568: Chapter 567: Flustered
Yan Feifan’s behavior made his older sister, Yan Ziruo, flush with embarrassment. She said sheepishly, "Su Ye, you know how Feifan gets... sometimes his brain just misfires..."
"Ziruo, I’m not angry. On the contrary, I’m very happy!"
Yu Suye’s face, flushed and lovely, seemed to rival the flowers in her hands. She beamed. "This is the first time Feifan has ever given me flowers, you know."
"Hehe, I never would have expected it. I’m too happy to be anything else."
Seeing the genuine joy in Yu Suye’s crinkled, affectionate eyes, Yan Ziruo could tell she wasn’t pretending and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
"Su Ye, the first time is just the beginning. There’ll be many more to come."
"Come on, let’s see what gifts this guy got us. If we’re not satisfied, we can gang up on him."
The two women hurried over to the living room sofa, sat down, and couldn’t wait to open the jewelry boxes in their hands.
"Wow, an emerald ring!"
"Mine’s purple! It’s gorgeous!"
The beautiful, sparkling gems made both Yu Suye’s and Yan Ziruo’s eyes light up.
"This should be jade, right?"
"The color is so rich and pure... If this is real, I know it must be worth a ton of money. It couldn’t be glass, could it?"
Despite her doubts, Yan Ziruo slipped the ring onto her finger. She admired it, nodding in satisfaction. "Well, it fits perfectly."
"Hey, Duan Yu, what’s the story with these rings? Do you know anything?"
Just then, the momentarily forgotten Duan Yu carried a suitcase and Yan Feifan’s briefcase into the living room. She sat down on the sofa next to Yan Ziruo.
Facing Yan Ziruo’s question and Yu Suye’s curious gaze, Duan Yu gave a quick and simple answer. "Zeng Ni took Mr. Yan to a jewelry store in Jingcheng called Yu Yuan Workshop. They acquired these two rings for one-tenth of their price by winning the store’s appraisal challenge."
"As for the rings’ actual price..."
Duan Yu pointed to the green jade ring in Yu Suye’s hand. "The shop said this one is Imperial Green, with a quoted price of 8.8 million!"
She then pointed to the ring on Yan Ziruo’s finger. "And yours is Imperial Violet, quoted at 6.8 million!"
Those two figures made both Yan Ziruo’s and Yu Suye’s hands tremble uncontrollably.
"How much? Say that again!" they both asked in unison.
Duan Yu didn’t repeat the prices, simply handing Yan Feifan’s briefcase to Yan Ziruo instead.
Yan Ziruo snatched the briefcase and rummaged inside, pulling out a certificate of authenticity, an invoice, the contest agreement, and other documents...
"Oh my god, they’re really worth this much!"
Yan Ziruo stared at the ring on her finger, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"This one tiny little stone is worth a two-bedroom apartment in the city? That’s just insane!"
At that moment, Yu Suye’s heart was also pounding wildly, her face flushed as if she’d just downed a whole bottle of red wine in one go.
However, as a surgeon, her composure was considerably better than Yan Ziruo’s.
"Ziruo, the price of top-quality jade can be astronomical."
"One of my aunts bought a ring she claimed was Imperial Green. She was showing it off to everyone, saying it was worth five million."
"I remember it clearly. It was a bit smaller than this one, and its color wasn’t nearly as deep or translucent."
Yu Suye took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart once more.
"Ziruo, that Zeng Ni can be a handful, but she wouldn’t fool around with something this serious. Otherwise, her family would never let her off easy."
"These two rings... they must be authentic. The real deal."
Yu Suye turned to Duan Yu. "Duan Yu, could you please tell us the whole story again, in detail?"
As a firsthand witness, Duan Yu wasn’t the most eloquent storyteller, but her description was so rich with detail that Yu Suye and Yan Ziruo felt as if they were right there with her.
The two women grew especially tense when Duan Yu described the owner of Yu Yuan Workshop sending seven or eight men to corner them in a coffee shop.
"Mr. Yan made a call to someone at the PLA General Hospital. That person contacted high-level military command, and the armed police came and hauled that whole group, including the owner, away."
Duan Yu glossed over that part, but then added, "The investigation over the last day or two uncovered other crimes he’d committed. That owner is going to be in prison for at least several years."
Yan Ziruo let out a long sigh of relief, patting her chest. "The important thing is that you’re all safe."
"Every time that brother of mine goes out, he manages to get into some kind of trouble. He’s a constant source of worry."
"He’s a walking trouble magnet. Duan Yu, you and Feng Jian need to watch him closely for me from now on."
After issuing her warning, another thought struck her. She couldn’t help but exclaim excitedly, "Suye! For the owner of that... workshop place... to lose his composure and send so many people after them? That’s all the proof we need that these rings are really worth that much money!"
She brought the ring on her finger up to her eyes, sighing in awe. "Wow, 6.8 million... 6.8 million for one tiny little stone."
Yan Ziruo glanced at the ring on Yu Suye’s finger, clicking her tongue with a hint of envy. "Yours is worth 8.8 million, though. Two million more than mine."
Then she asked, "So, Su Ye, are you satisfied? Getting a ring like this as a betrothal gift from my clueless, unromantic brother?"
"Want me to help you teach him a thing or two? Make him arrange a proper romantic ceremony or something?"
"Ziruo, no, there’s no need!"
Yu Suye shook her head vigorously, her eyes glued to the ring and practically glowing.
"The ceremony isn’t important in the slightest. It’s the thought that counts, and I’m more than satisfied. A million percent satisfied."
Yan Ziruo snorted and muttered, "Any girl who gets an 8.8 million ring as a betrothal gift and isn’t satisfied ought to be struck by lightning."
Her gaze shifted to the bathroom door. "Why has he been in there for so long?" she wondered aloud.
"Even if he were taking a shower, he should be finished by now."
At that very moment, Yan Feifan, having finished washing up, was sitting on the toilet trying to calm himself down.
’Actually, after buying the flowers, I really did think about having a romantic ceremony to give her the ring,’ he thought. ’Something like you see on TV, in an elegant restaurant... But the moment I thought of that, my mind involuntarily jumped to engagement, and then marriage. Right after that, kids started popping up. Several of them.’
He immediately panicked.
Yan Feifan had a deep-seated fear of marriage, family, and children. ’I don’t get it,’ he thought, bewildered. ’I haven’t even been with Yu Suye that long. How did our relationship suddenly take another step forward?’
Flustered and panicking, the moment he had walked through the door, Yan Feifan had unceremoniously dumped the flowers and rings on his sister and Yu Suye before fleeing into the bathroom.
But even after a fair amount of time, it wasn’t having much of an effect.
’It’s just a ring. Marriage is still a long, long way off.’
Yan Feifan repeated this to himself over and over, until he heard a sharp KNOCK KNOCK on the door.
"Feifan, what are you doing in there, hatching an egg?"
"Get out here!"
At his sister’s insistence, Yan Feifan pulled his phone from his pocket and reluctantly exited the bathroom.
He waved the phone at his sister, making up an excuse. "Ziruo, I was just talking with Dr. Qiu about the sleep study..."
Yan Feifan hadn’t even finished his sentence when the phone began to ring.
He glanced at the caller ID and froze.
Speak of the devil. It was a call from Dr. Qiu Ge himself...
