Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 575 - 574: Pursuer

Chapter 575: Chapter 574: Pursuer

Just after six in the evening, quitting time, Yan Ziruo arrived at her younger brother’s office in the Little Red House. She found him standing in the inner room before the floor-to-ceiling window, his hands clasped behind his back.

She walked over to Yan Feifan’s side, stood shoulder to shoulder with him, and glanced curiously at the view outside. "What are you looking at?" she asked.

"Introspection! Self-reflection!"

The answer surprised Yan Ziruo. "Introspecting about what?" she asked. "Did something happen? Did someone upset you?"

Yan Feifan turned, walked over to the sofa, and sat down. "I saw a patient this afternoon," he said softly, "and made a careless, presumptuous mistake."

"Well, well, isn’t that a rare sight. So the genius doctor makes mistakes too."

Yan Ziruo sat down next to her brother on the sofa, her interest piqued. "Come on, tell me. What exactly did you do wrong?"

"You wouldn’t understand even if I told you!"

Yan Feifan replied dismissively, but when he saw his sister raise a small fist, he quickly elaborated. "The patient I saw this afternoon has palmar hyperhidrosis and had a sympathectomy performed at another hospital."

"The surgery resulted in severe complications. The patient wants to have the severed sympathetic nerve reconnected to reverse the procedure."

Yan Ziruo let out a soft "oh." "And you can’t do it?" she asked.

Yan Feifan said sheepishly, "It’s not that I can’t do it. I just can’t use the method I’d originally taken for granted."

"My original plan was to cultivate the nerves in-vivo before grafting them."

"But the patient’s severed sympathetic nerve is... special. It’s composed of a series of interconnected, spherical ganglia."

Yan Feifan sighed softly. "These ganglia aren’t the same as the nerve bundles we’ve been studying for our in-vivo cultivation project."

"I just made a thoughtless assumption."

"It was a very elementary mistake."

"I was just reflecting on it, and I realized I’ve gotten a bit arrogant. I’m not as meticulous and cautious as I used to be."

As Yan Feifan was reflecting, he also found himself missing Yiyi.

In the past, whenever he made a mistake or fell short, Yiyi would always pop up to mock him.

As annoying as it was, it undoubtedly helped Yan Feifan promptly identify his shortcomings, correct his mistakes, and constantly strive for perfection.

But for quite some time now, Yiyi, Erer, and Sansan had stopped appearing.

They wouldn’t show up anymore, even when he actively called for them.

’Has my mental state completely recovered?’

Deep down, Yan Feifan still wished Yiyi would stick around to point out his blind spots and warn him about mistakes and oversights.

Lost in his complex thoughts, Yan Feifan heard his sister ask, "So, Feifan, is there any way for you to cure that patient?"

Yan Feifan answered frankly, "Sis, there’s a ’robbing Peter to pay Paul’ solution. We could graft sympathetic ganglia from other parts of the patient’s body to reconnect the severed nerve."

"However, it comes with significant risks."

"If the recovery doesn’t go well, the patient could end up with complications in two different areas of their body. And there’s a high probability of that happening."

Yan Feifan looked at his sister, changing the subject. "Sis, you’re off work. Why didn’t you go straight home? What brings you here?"

"I lent my car to a colleague to show off, so I came to catch a ride home with you."

Yan Ziruo explained, then lifted her leg and rested her stocking-clad right calf on her brother’s thigh.

"Feifan, take a look at my calf. Don’t you think it’s a bit thick?"

Yan Feifan glanced down. "Sis, for your height and weight, as long as your calf circumference is under thirty-five centimeters, you’re in the normal range."

"Yours is what, thirty-three?"

"Thirty-three and a *tiny* bit more!"

Yan Ziruo said smugly, pulling her leg back. But then she pouted and sighed. "A few of my colleagues were talking about who has the best legs today, and I realized mine are on the thicker side compared to theirs."

"They even mentioned getting some kind of nerve block procedure to make their calves slimmer."

"Feifan, does the Plastic Surgery Center offer a leg-slimming procedure like that?"

Yan Feifan shook his head. "No."

"Procedures like nerve blocks and liposuction have major side effects. The center operates on the principle of being responsible for our patients, so we don’t perform any cosmetic procedures—especially for weight loss—if the patient can achieve the same goal through diet and exercise."

To stop his sister from getting any funny ideas, Yan Feifan added, "Getting a nerve block to slim your calves would make you walk as slow as an old woman. You wouldn’t be able to jump or run."

Yan Ziruo stood up. "Relax, I wouldn’t get some crazy surgery like that."

"After my last surgery, I’m terrified of the pain..."

At that, Yan Ziruo suddenly remembered something. She reached out and pinched Yan Feifan’s ear.

"You little brat! My two colleagues from accounting who got full-face cosmetic surgery said they barely felt any pain. They just had to bear with it for a few days, and then it was over."

"So why was I in so much pain for days?"

"Did you..."

Yan Feifan shook his head, freeing his ear from his sister’s clutches. He quickly defended himself, "Sis, I swear I didn’t mess with anything."

"Everyone has a different perception of and tolerance for pain. Besides, it’s entirely possible they were just putting on a brave face."

After his quick explanation, he immediately changed the subject. "So those two colleagues of yours are much prettier now. Do they have boyfriends yet?"

Yan Ziruo huffed twice, then said dejectedly, "They do. Both were set up. One’s a civil servant, the other is a corporate manager. They’re both pretty good catches."

Yan Feifan said, "Oh." He tried to comfort her, "Sis, you’re ten times prettier than they are, and you’re in a much better position yourself. You’ll definitely find someone a hundred times better than their boyfriends."

"Sigh. I’m not in a rush to find a boyfriend anymore. I’ll just let nature take its course. If worst comes to worst, you can just support me for the rest of my life."

Yan Ziruo said, sounding disheartened. Then she asked, "Feifan, are you really not going to take on any more cosmetic surgery cases?"

"I get asked that question every single day."

Yan Feifan chuckled. "I’ll still perform cosmetic surgery. I just won’t be taking on cases so casually anymore."

"There are two conditions: either the case is challenging enough to interest me, or the pay is exceptionally good."

"Sis, from now on, if anyone asks, just tell them my starting fee has gone up to two million."

Yan Ziruo couldn’t help but laugh. "At that price, you make money faster than a bank robber."

"But I like it. Heh heh..."

The siblings chatted idly for another ten minutes or so until Yan Feifan got a message from Yu Suye saying she was almost finished.

The two of them gathered their things and left the office with Feng Jian.

As they drove up near the Trauma Surgery Department, Yan Feifan noticed a crowd of at least thirty or forty people gathered in the open space in front of the building.

’Was there a major accident? Or is someone causing a scene?’

Yan Feifan muttered to himself and had Feng Jian stop the car. He, his curious sister, and Feng Jian all hurried over to see what was going on.

As they got closer, the three of them were startled to find that the large crowd was actually gawking at three incredibly flashy supercars.

Judging by the logos, the three supercars appeared to be a Ferrari, a Bugatti Veyron, and a Lamborghini.

Yan Feifan didn’t know the specific models, but he could tell they were supercars from their chassis, which were practically scraping the ground.

Even though Yan Feifan had no particular interest in cars, the ridiculously flashy look of these three vehicles made him take a second, and then a third, glance.

Standing in front of the three sports cars were three well-postured young men.

The one in the middle was holding a large bouquet of flowers.

Clearly, the guy was either here to pick up his girlfriend or to make a grand confession.

Yan Feifan commented indignantly, "This is a hospital. Parking supercars right here, with this whole crowd gathered around... they’re completely blocking the emergency access route."

"Why aren’t the security guards doing anything about this?"

Yan Ziruo said with a hint of envy, "Supercars worth ten or twenty million are their own pass. The security guards play favorites; they probably wouldn’t dare try to shoo them away."

As they were talking, Yan Feifan saw Yu Suye walk out of the Trauma Surgery building. She was dressed in crisp, casual clothes and carrying a small handbag.

Yan Feifan quickly waved to her, but was taken aback when he saw the young man with the flowers stride purposefully toward her.

At that, Yan Feifan’s expression instantly darkened.
