Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 596 - 595: Crucial Moment

Chapter 596: Chapter 595: Crucial Moment

Yan Feifan tied the sleeve he’d torn off above the wound on his left calf, pulling it tight and securing it with a dead knot to slow the bleeding.

He then turned to the pale Duan Yu and noticed the front of her clothes was completely soaked with blood.

"You’re hurt. Let me take a look."

Duan Yu refused. "Don’t worry about it. It’s a minor wound. I can take it!"

Yan Feifan acted before she could finish speaking.

He lifted her shirt and saw a round, bleeding wound the size of a peanut on the left side of her waist.

Yan Feifan’s expression tightened. It was a gunshot wound.

The situation was worse than he’d expected.

Yan Feifan quickly checked her over but couldn’t find an exit wound.

That meant the bullet was still inside her.

It also meant the bullet’s impact was relatively weak.

Also, judging by the wound’s location, the amount of bleeding, and Duan Yu’s endurance and reaction, Yan Feifan deduced that the bullet likely hadn’t damaged her liver, kidneys, or other major organs.

However, it was almost certain her intestines had been injured.

Based on what he could see and feel, Yan Feifan quickly ran a mental simulation of the potential damage the bullet had caused to her abdomen.

"Duan Yu, your life isn’t in immediate danger, but you need surgery as soon as possible."

As he spoke, Yan Feifan tore off his right sleeve, ripped it into a long strip, and wrapped it tightly around the wound on her left side.

It was the only treatment he could provide right now.

He also tried to encourage her. "Duan Yu, don’t be scared!"

"It didn’t hit any vital organs, but you’ve lost a lot of blood. Once we get to a hospital, I’ll perform the surgery myself."

"Just hang in there!"

Duan Yu grunted. "I’ve had rigorous training. I’m in good shape and have more stamina than most people. I can hold on."

She paused, then instructed, "Rest for thirty seconds. Conserve your strength. We’ll make a break for it across this open stretch. If we make it, we win."

Yan Feifan glanced at the three-to-five-meter gap ahead, then back at Duan Yu’s pale face and her blood-soaked waist. He looked up again, toward the American police who were in a standoff with the criminals ten or twenty meters to their right.

"Duan Yu, you need treatment right away. A sudden burst of energy will make you bleed faster."

"We have to run toward the American police..."

As he spoke, Yan Feifan reached out to help Duan Yu up, but she gripped his wrist tightly.

"Mr. Yan, we can’t go to the American police! They’ll shoot you. You almost died by their hand just a moment ago."

Yan Feifan was stunned. He asked urgently, "Why would they try to shoot me?"

"I’m not one of the criminals! I’m a doctor—a victim!"

Duan Yu took two quick breaths. "It’s most likely because your medical skills are too extraordinary. It made the United States Government decide to kill you."

"I even suspect this whole shootout was orchestrated by them, just to get rid of you."

Yan Feifan’s face was a mask of disbelief.

"That’s impossible, isn’t it?"

"I’m just a doctor, not some nuclear missile expert."

Duan Yu explained, "You may not be a weapons expert, but your ability to heal people makes you just as valuable."

"It’s entirely possible that the United States Government is using this shootout as cover. Since they’ve started, they might as well finish the job and eliminate you."

"They’ll just say you were hit by the criminals or killed by a stray bullet. At most, they’ll pay some compensation."

Just then, amidst the sporadic gunfire, a buzzing sound came from the sky.

His mind reeling from Duan Yu’s words, Yan Feifan looked up. Two helicopters were circling overhead.

He couldn’t help but think they were probably American news helicopters, reporting live from the scene.

The American media was always on point in that regard, always the first to show up at the scene of an accident or disaster.

Duan Yu’s voice sounded in his ear again.

"Mr. Yan, my orders are to protect you at all costs."

"We can’t trust the American police anymore. We can’t take that risk. You only get one life."

"I’ve already sent out a distress signal. Our people in Los Angeles will be here soon."

"We just need to hide between those cars and wait."

Yan Feifan looked at Duan Yu’s increasingly pale face and said hesitantly, "But, Duan Yu, you need surgery right away."

Duan Yu gave a faint smile. "I’m a soldier. My duty is to ensure your safety."

"Mr. Yan, your safety is the top priority."

Her words made Yan Feifan’s stomach clench.

’As a doctor, not only am I unable to save lives, but now I’m forcing a seriously wounded person to sacrifice herself to protect me.’

"Mr. Yan, when I worked in Jingcheng, my meal times were never regular. There was a chef in the cafeteria who would always save my favorite dishes for me."

"I knew what he was trying to say."

"The night I got my transfer orders, I told him to wait three years for me."

"Mr. Yan, if I don’t make it through today..."

Watching Duan Yu’s face flush with a shy, embarrassed expression, Yan Feifan’s vision suddenly blurred.

’Duan Yu is somebody’s daughter. Why should she have to sacrifice herself for me? Yan Feifan, are you even human?’

’Aren’t you supposed to be a genius?’

’So why are you losing your nerve at the most critical moment?’

Filled with self-reproach and shame, the courage that had been frightened out of him by the shootout slowly began to pool back together.

He wiped his eyes hard and cut Duan Yu off. "Duan Yu, now is not the time to be giving your last words."

"Don’t worry. As long as I’m here, you’ll be fine. You can tell your sweetheart whatever’s on your mind yourself."

Even as he spoke, Yan Feifan’s mind was racing, searching for a way out.

Suddenly, he noticed something.

Among the cars they were trying to reach for cover, the driver’s-side door of an old Audi was slightly ajar.

The owner must have fled in a panic during the chaos and failed to shut the door properly.

Yan Feifan guessed the keys were probably still in the ignition.

"Duan Yu, right now you’re not a soldier, you’re a seriously wounded patient. And I’m the doctor. Stay here. I’m going to save you."

The words had barely left his mouth before Yan Feifan scrambled to his feet and sprinted out without a moment’s hesitation.

At the speed Yan Feifan was moving, the three-to-five-meter distance would only take him two or three seconds.

The time was short, but it was enough for him to get a clear look at his surroundings.

In that fleeting glance to his left and right, Yan Feifan’s mind rapidly processed the information.

To his left, the criminals were hiding behind two buses. Yan Feifan could see three gunmen and two more gun barrels.

To his right were six police cars and eleven officers.

To his astonishment, he could clearly see a gun barrel from the direction of the police aimed right at him.

’Aiming here poses no threat to the criminals. Unless Duan Yu’s analysis was correct...’

As his mind raced, he saw something horrifying: the barrel aimed at him jolted...

’Did they just fire?’

Before the thought could even fully form, his body had already reacted.

He pushed off hard with his left foot, launching his body forward and diving into the gap between the old Audi and a Buick...

With a heavy THUD, Yan Feifan slammed onto the ground. A wave of painful numbness washed over him, and he lost all feeling in his limbs.

A moment later, an intense wave of pain crashed over him, but with it, he regained control of his body.

He didn’t have time to check if he’d been hit. He scrambled up, bent low, pulled the Audi’s door open, and dove inside.

Thank God. Just as he’d hoped, the key was in the Audi’s ignition.

Now came the critical moment to test the driving skills he had honed in the simulation...
