Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 598 - 597: I’m Fine

Chapter 598: Chapter 597: I’m Fine

After opening Duan Yu’s abdominal cavity and draining the accumulated fluid, Yan Feifan conducted a thorough visual and manual examination. He found that her injuries were, for the most part, exactly as he had analyzed.

The bullet had passed through the descending colon and perforated the jejunum in three places before losing all its momentum.

It was inside a section of the jejunum that Yan Feifan located the wandering bullet.

After removing the bullet, Yan Feifan performed another exhaustive check of her abdominal cavity.

Liver and kidneys, normal.

Uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, normal.

Confirming that only Duan Yu’s intestinal system was damaged allowed Yan Feifan to relax. He then began the debridement and suturing portion of the surgery.

Intestinal surgery is a common procedure in general surgery, one that surgeons frequently encounter during their internships and residencies.

For most young surgeons, their first time as the lead surgeon in a formal operation is typically an appendectomy, an intestinal polypectomy, or a repair for an intestinal perforation.

Firstly, such procedures are quite common.

Secondly, the intestines have a powerful self-healing capacity, with a fair amount of redundancy and fault tolerance.

In some autologous reconstructive surgeries, such as the reconstruction of the esophagus, fallopian tubes, or ureters, the graft material is taken from a section of the intestinal tract.

General surgery is a mandatory and key rotation for all young surgeons.

Moreover, surgeons often practice their surgical skills on the intestinal tissues of various animals.

They’re easy to obtain, and after the training is complete, they can still be put to good use.

Given the circumstances, handling Duan Yu’s intestinal injuries was well within Yan Feifan’s capabilities, considering his current knowledge and surgical skill...

Over two hours later, Yan Feifan placed the abdominal drainage tube, made the final sutures, and completed the operation.

He saw that the unconscious Duan Yu’s complexion had returned to normal, no longer frighteningly pale, and that her vital signs were all within acceptable ranges. He let out a huge sigh of relief.

The moment Yan Feifan relaxed, the physical and mental fatigue, discomfort, nausea, and pain washed over him like a tidal wave, nearly causing him to collapse right there in the operating room.

He fought back the wave of discomfort, stumbled out of the operating room, and hastily stripped off his surgical gown and protective suit.

Having been sealed inside the suit for over two hours, he was drenched in sweat as if he’d been dunked in water. His hair was plastered to his head in wet strands.

The cool, fresh air that rushed in to envelop him gave Yan Feifan the sensation of being saved from drowning.

At that moment, Yan Feifan bent over, bracing himself against the wall. Like a fish pulled from the water, he opened his mouth wide and gasped for air.

"Feifan, here!"

Following Zhong Xinyi’s familiar voice, Yan Feifan saw a bag of saline solution and a bag of glucose solution held out to him.

They were exactly what he needed.

He took them with both hands, stuck a corner of the saline bag and the glucose bag into his mouth, and bit them open.

Then, Yan Feifan straightened up and began to drink deeply.

To be honest, the saline and glucose were nowhere near as good as a cool glass of water, but they were what his body desperately needed.

He chugged them down as if they were the most delicious drinks in the world. As he drank, his eyes swept across the hall, where he was surprised to see ten or twenty people all staring at him in unison.

Among them were two American police officers in uniform. Most of the others were dressed in suits, their faces grim.

Yan Feifan, having regained some of his energy, walked into the main hall and tossed the two empty IV bags into a recycling bin.

"Are you all here for me?"

As Yan Feifan spoke, a square-faced man in his fifties with salt-and-pepper hair stepped out from the crowd.

"Mr. Yan, I am Xiao Jie Ming from the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles. I heard you and your companion were involved in this horrific incident, and I came at once to offer any assistance I can."

Mr. Xiao asked with concern, "Mr. Yan, and your companion?"

Yan Feifan gave a simple reply, "The surgery was a success. Her life is no longer in danger, but she’s still in a coma and will need time to rest and recover peacefully."

Just then, a slightly older, white police officer stepped forward. "Mr. Yan Feifan, I’m Officer Richard Bandler with the Los Angeles police. I need to take a detailed statement about what happened to you and your companion."

Instead of answering, Yan Feifan asked, "Mr. Bandler, were all the assailants caught?"

"What about the other three people in the car with me?"

Mr. Bandler explained, "There were six armed suspects in total. Our officers killed four of them on the scene. The other two were seriously wounded and are currently being treated at the hospital."

"As for the other three people in the car with Mr. Yan..."

The officer said sympathetically, "The two American men are deceased. The Chinese national sustained minor injuries and is also receiving treatment at the hospital."

Yan Feifan was greatly relieved to hear that his compatriot, the assistant He Tao, had only suffered minor injuries. It was the only piece of good news.

Yan Feifan had anticipated Dr. Hakeman’s death.

His injuries were impossible to survive.

Still, hearing the confirmation from the police filled Yan Feifan with regret and sorrow.

Although he had only known Dr. Hakeman for a short time, Yan Feifan could tell he was a truly dedicated doctor.

Otherwise, the man wouldn’t have been so persistent in discussing medical techniques with him, trying to uncover the secret behind his puncture and injection method.

’Who would have thought something like this would happen!’

’You truly never know whether tragedy or tomorrow will come first.’

Yan Feifan sighed to himself.

Next, accompanied by a lawyer Mr. Xiao had brought, he recounted his and Duan Yu’s experience to the two American police officers.

He wisely chose not to mention that one of the American police officers had aimed and fired at him.

On American soil, accusing an American police officer of attempted murder—Yan Feifan wasn’t that foolish.

Not to mention, it was unknown whether that officer was alive or dead, and his accusation would just be his word against theirs. The mere thought that this might have been an order from the United States Government was enough to send a chill down his spine.

Right now, all Yan Feifan wanted was to return to China as quickly as possible, to get back to Binhai and leave this nightmarish experience in the United States behind.

After questioning Yan Feifan about the specifics of what happened and verifying a few details, Mr. Bandler left.

Afterward, Yan Feifan forced himself to stay alert. He showered at the clinic, changed into a fresh set of clothes provided by Zhong Xinyi, and re-dressed the wound on his left leg.

Then, accompanied by Mr. Xiao, he got into a black sedan flying the Chinese flag and left the clinic...

"Are we going to the Los Angeles Consulate General?"

Mr. Xiao replied in a somber tone, "No. We’re going to Los Angeles International Airport."

"Mr. Yan, we’ve arranged a private flight for you, nonstop to Binhai."

He paused for a moment before adding, "Mr. Yan, I received instructions from China to get you safely out of the United States as soon as possible."

Yan Feifan felt a surge of joy but then asked with concern, "What about Duan Yu?"

Mr. Xiao replied softly, "We will take good care of her. Once she has recovered enough, we will send her home."

Just then, Mr. Xiao handed him a few items in a sealed plastic bag.

"Mr. Yan, these are your IDs and personal effects that were left in the car. As for your phone, tablet, and other electronics, we were worried the Americans might tamper with them, so we had them destroyed."

"You can use this phone to contact your family and friends."

Yan Feifan took the new phone from Mr. Xiao and dialed his sister’s number.

The call connected after just one ring.

"Sis, it’s me. I’m fine..."
