Chapter 644: Chapter 643: Influence
Seeing the excitement written all over Zhou Xian’s face, Yan Feifan offered his congratulations, then asked a question to find out what was happening.
The organ donor was in Guangshen, and the heart would take another three or four hours to be transported to Binhai.
This left Yan Feifan a little speechless.
’He’s getting ahead of himself. That’s more than enough time for Zhou Xian to prepare calmly.’
However, Yan Feifan also understood how important this heart transplant was to Zhou Xian.
If it was a success, he’d be vindicated, and his career would reach a new height.
If he failed, he would have no choice but to leave the Affiliated Hospital in disgrace, utterly disheartened, and find a small hospital to coast in until retirement.
Yan Feifan also knew that the first heart disease patient Zhou Xian had managed to convince—by offering to cover part of the surgical fees out of his own pocket—had passed away a few days ago.
This must have been the second patient he had brought on board.
It was understandable that he would be overjoyed at his luck, finding a suitable heart for transplant so quickly.
Still, Yan Feifan chided him, "Dr. Zhou, one must remain calm in the face of major events. Acting like this, how are you any different from a young doctor fresh out of medical school?"
Dr. Zhou knew he had gotten a bit carried away, and Yan Feifan’s words served as a wake-up call.
Dr. Zhou took a couple of deep breaths to regulate his emotions and his physical and mental state. He gave a slight bow and said, "You’re right, Mr. Yan. I lost my composure. The more critical the moment, the more I need to settle down and face it with a clear mind."
He then gave a short, self-deprecating laugh. "More than ten years of experience, and my composure still isn’t where it should be."
"A single piece of news was enough to break my composure."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan changed his tune and offered some comfort. "It’s just that you care so much about this surgery. That’s understandable."
"Dr. Zhou, go and get ready."
Dr. Zhou grunted in affirmation, then paused before extending an invitation. "Mr. Yan, the surgery is scheduled to start this evening."
"Would you have time to come to the operating room and supervise?"
Well...
Yan Feifan considered his own weakened state, the six- or seven-hour surgery, and all the work he had to do over the next few days...
"Dr. Zhou, I have a lot of work that’s piled up. I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it tonight to observe. My apologies."
Dr. Zhou knew Yan Feifan had been incredibly busy for the past two weeks, so this wasn’t just an excuse.
"Mr. Yan, no need for apologies. In fact, it was inconsiderate of me to ask..."
The two exchanged a few more pleasantries before parting ways to attend to their own tasks.
After having lunch with Yu Suye, Yan Feifan returned to Qin Ying’s medical research lab and got to work on the tongue specimen.
「At nearly five in the afternoon」
Two of a patient’s family members came looking for Yan Feifan.
Yan Feifan saw a mother and daughter who looked so alike they could have been sisters. He recognized them immediately: they were the wife and daughter of the patient who had woken up from a vegetative state.
The patient’s wife dabbed at the corners of her eyes, her expression pitiable. "Mr. Yan, it was our fault. We shouldn’t have gotten carried away and posted that video."
"We only wanted to express our gratitude. We never thought we’d end up doing the wrong thing and get you, Dr. Qiu, and Dr. Xv investigated."
"We’re so sorry."
Just then, her lovely sixteen- or seventeen-year-old daughter chimed in, "Mr. Yan, is the trouble very serious?"
"We haven’t been able to find Dr. Xv for a few days."
"One of the nurses told us that Dr. Xv was severely reprimanded and kicked out of the hospital."
"Is that true?"
Yan Feifan maintained a stern expression. "You don’t need to blame yourselves for this. The main issue was Dr. Xv’s procedural violation. Even if you hadn’t posted that video, this would have eventually come to light."
"As for why you can’t find him, his duties were suspended after the investigation, and he went home to Jingcheng."
The patient’s wife dabbed her eyes again. "Dr. Xv is a good person. He just couldn’t stand seeing us in such a pitiful state and wanted to help."
"My husband woke up because of his help."
"Dr. Xv may have made a mistake, but he also accomplished something great—something truly great, didn’t he?"
Yan Feifan explained patiently, "Dr. Xv was *only* suspended and put under investigation precisely because your husband was fortunate enough to wake up."
"Otherwise, he’d be in police custody right now."
He stressed, "Our experimental treatments are subject to strict regulations. We can’t just experiment on patients’ health and lives."
The patient’s daughter looked at him expectantly. "Mr. Yan, everyone says you’re incredible. They say your word is law at the Affiliated Hospital, that you have more sway than the secretary or the president."
"Mr. Yan, you can help Dr. Xv get through this, can’t you?"
Yan Feifan resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "I’m just a doctor. I’m not as powerful as you imagine."
"Besides, the hospital’s administrative department is in charge of the investigation and will decide on the punishment. I’m one of the people being penalized, too."
The patient’s daughter said, confused, "But they all say that two secretaries in a row were forced out because they got on your bad side."
"Is saving Dr. Xv really harder than getting rid of a secretary?"
Seeing Yan Feifan’s expression darken, the patient’s wife quickly grabbed her daughter, muttered an apology, and hurried away...
「At 6:20 that evening」
Back at his apartment in Zuimo Court, Yan Feifan asked Yu Suye and his sister if it was true that rumors were spreading around the hospital that he had been the one to drive out both the former secretary, Mr. Cheng, and the current one, Mrs. Meng.
Yan Ziruo grinned and confirmed that the rumor was indeed going around.
"Mr. Cheng had to take the blame and resign after his son hit you with his motorcycle. That incident caused a public outcry, and then other issues of his were exposed."
"As for Mrs. Meng..."
Yan Ziruo snorted, her voice dripping with contempt. "She thought you’d had an accident and wouldn’t be coming back, so she decided to kick you while you were down. Her actions were a breach of integrity, so she also had to resign."
"Saying you drove out two secretaries is a bit of an exaggeration, but you were definitely the cause."
Yan Feifan tried to defend himself. "I was just the catalyst, an external factor. The main reason is that they lacked integrity in the first place."
Yu Suye chuckled. "Feifan, there’s actually some truth to the idea that you drove them out."
"Think about it. If you were just an ordinary doctor, who would have stood up for you when they targeted you?"
"But because you’re the famous genius doctor, Yan Feifan, all sorts of people came forward to seek justice on your behalf when things blew up."
"Exactly," Yan Ziruo said with conviction.
"Feifan, when your status and influence reach a certain point, you don’t even need to give the order. People will try to figure out what you want and take the initiative to do it for you."
"I’m just a doctor," Yan Feifan said, unconvinced. "Do I really have that much influence?"
Just then, his phone rang. It was a call from Liu Jin.
"Feifan, the hospital’s new leadership team has been confirmed. The official announcement will be on Wednesday."
"I’ll be taking over as secretary, and Hou Jianfeng will be the new president. Mr. Chen, who’s in charge of research and academic affairs, is being transferred to City First Hospital to become their president."
"In exchange, the vice president of medical affairs from City First Hospital will be transferred here to serve in the same role."
"And Mrs. Yu will be promoted to vice president of research and academic affairs."
’Mrs. Yu is being promoted to vice president?’
As Yan Feifan was processing this surprise, Liu Jin’s voice continued over the phone. "The position of the secretary of the Disciplinary Inspection Commission will remain unchanged."
"Then on Friday, we’re going to make some changes to a few department heads. Wang Chuan will step down from his post as director of the plastic surgery center, but he’ll be retained as an expert-level physician with director-level benefits."
"Dr. Qiu Ge will take over from Mr. Qin as the director of neurosurgery."
"Mr. Jing will take over as the director of trauma surgery..."
After he hung up with Liu Jin, Yan Feifan heard his sister exclaim excitedly, "Feifan, see? This is a perfect example of your influence."
"They’re giving you advance notice on something as major and confidential as a reshuffling of hospital leadership and department heads."
"Feifan, did you notice?"
"Everyone on good terms with you got promoted!"
