Chapter 677: Chapter 676: An Unexpected Encounter
The celebration for Associate Professor Shi Min’s 30th teaching anniversary and retirement successfully concluded at nearly 9 p.m.
As the guests began to depart, Liu Jin, Chen Yu, Wang Chuan, and Yan Feifan moved to the teahouse on the floor below the Jinxiu Grand Hotel.
As for Shi Min, he had family and friends to attend to, as well as several old friends who had made a special trip to see him. He wouldn’t be free from this evening until tomorrow.
The group entered a private room. Liu Jin ordered some tea leaves, waved the waiter away, and began to brew the tea himself.
While rinsing the teapot and cups with hot water, he casually asked, "Feifan, how are the preparations for the research lab coming along?"
Yan Feifan reported in detail, "The renovations weren’t extensive. We just knocked through a wall to create a doorway. They said it will be finished by this coming Monday."
"As for staff, four students, two surgical nurses, five ward nurses, and one finance officer have been confirmed. Their employment paperwork should all be completed by next Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest."
At this, Liu Jin couldn’t help but interject, "Feifan, speaking of the students, my phone was blowing up that day."
"To save you the trouble, I politely declined them one by one."
Hearing this, Wang Chuan, who was sitting to the side, secretly pursed his lips. ’What a nice way to put it,’ he thought. ’You’ve reached a position you’re not likely to move from anytime soon, so of course you don’t need to use Yan Feifan to curry favor anymore.’
"Thank you for being so considerate, Teacher!"
Yan Feifan expressed his thanks and continued his report. "The simpler administrative and logistical tasks will be handled by Duan Yu and Feng Jian."
"We can also take this opportunity to formally transfer Feng Jian’s employment to the hospital."
"Right now, the main thing we’re still missing is a suitable anesthesiologist."
Liu Jin nodded. "Including you and your sister, that’s nearly twenty people. That’s no smaller than a small department."
"Feifan, now that the team is assembled, you can’t let them sit idle. You need to start consolidating the surgeries that should fall under your purview."
Liu Jin added, "At this coming Monday’s administrative meeting, I’ll propose giving your research lab the authority to set its own prices for surgeries and consultation fees."
"After the hospital deducts relevant costs and takes a certain percentage, the rest will be entirely at your research lab’s disposal."
"Thank you for looking out for me, Teacher!" Yan Feifan was all smiles.
’This was the benefit of establishing an independently accounted entity. He would have considerable financial autonomy.’
’From now on, I can single-handedly decide how to spend the lab’s surplus income.’
’Of course, if its expenses exceed its income, that would also be my responsibility.’
Liu Jin’s expression turned serious as he warned, "Feifan, for non-essential procedures like plastic surgery, it’s a mutually agreed-upon arrangement. As long as both sides are willing, no matter how high a price you set, outsiders can’t really complain."
"But for procedures like tumor biopsies, you can’t be greedy. That would cause a public outcry."
Yan Feifan chuckled. "Teacher, I know the score. I’ll mainly be ’cutting flesh’ from foreigners and the rich—big chunks of it."
"I’ll stick to the principle of ’robbing the rich to feed the poor.’"
His words brought a small smile to the faces of Liu Jin, Chen Yu, and Wang Chuan.
After thanking Liu Jin for pouring him some tea, Chen Yu also spoke up. "Feifan, that ten million in funding for your ’Audio-Hypnosis and Infrasound Awakening’ project, the grant from the Municipal Science and Technology Commission’s key projects initiative, is set to arrive this coming Wednesday."
"I heard that Xv Jiande over at Union Medical College Hospital has already successfully awakened a patient from a vegetative state?"
Yan Feifan hummed in confirmation. Meeting Liu Jin’s concerned and probing gaze, he said, "That’s been confirmed."
"We just don’t know how many patients in a vegetative state he’s tested it on."
"Or if the test subjects have shown any adverse reactions."
After a brief pause, Yan Feifan added, "Currently, the lab mice we performed the brainstem stimulation experiment on are being monitored and are in good condition. It’s been five days since the procedure, and we haven’t observed any adverse symptoms."
"This coming Monday, we’ll perform dissections. If we don’t find any abnormalities, we’ll apply to begin clinical trials on human subjects."
Liu Jin nodded slightly. "Feifan," he advised, "since you can’t be the first, you have to be steady and sure-footed. Ensure your results are as good as they can be."
"For Xv Jiande to get results this quickly, he must have skipped the animal testing stage..."
Liu Jin snorted. "Jingcheng’s medical community may be his turf, but our Affiliated Hospital has people and connections there too."
"I’ll contact a few friends in Jingcheng and ask them to keep a close eye on Xv Jiande’s research and trials."
"To prevent anyone from faking results or recklessly endangering lives..."
The group discussed the research and development for a while before casually shifting to recent work matters.
Chen Yu informed Yan Feifan that the negotiations with Extraordinary Medical Technology were progressing rather smoothly and were close to an agreement.
However, Chen Yu also took the opportunity to complain that some of Song Yi’s conditions were too harsh. He asked Yan Feifan to mediate a bit, reminding him that they were all on the same side.
Yan Feifan just chuckled, stating that he didn’t meddle in the management or business affairs of Extraordinary Medical Technology in the slightest.
Liu Jin also told Yan Feifan that the number of requests for visits and exchanges from foreign medical institutions had recently surged. There were now nine, all of them internationally renowned.
He pointed out that this sudden interest in the Affiliated Hospital was, in all likelihood, because of Yan Feifan.
Yan Feifan, who was now a firm believer in "once bitten, twice shy," said that he welcomed exchange visits, but if they wanted him to go abroad for surgery, there wasn’t a chance.
Liu Jin burst out laughing. "Feifan, you’re a national treasure now. Even if you wanted to leave the country, they wouldn’t let you."
"Hey..."
He suddenly asked, curious, "Feifan, a while ago, the military requisitioned a villa for you in the Academician District from Binhai University. I heard it caused the university’s leadership quite a bit of embarrassment."
"Feifan, did you secretly do something big for the military again?"
Seeing the inquisitive looks on both Liu Jin’s and Chen Yu’s faces, Yan Feifan answered vaguely, "The weekend before last, I helped the military with something in Jingcheng. Apparently, it prevented several billion in losses."
Liu Jin drew out a long "Ohhh." He said, "Billions, you say? Then it’s no wonder the military rewarded you with a villa."
Just then, Wang Chuan asked, "Mr. Liu, the military must have given him a villa because Feifan rendered some great service. How could that bunch at Bin University not see something so obvious?"
"Were they all kicked in the head by a donkey?"
Liu Jin chuckled meaningfully. "Of course their heads weren’t kicked by a donkey. It was a classic case of misdirection. Their real target was someone else."
"The assistant dean, Jiang Tao?" Yan Feifan asked, seeking confirmation.
Liu Jin gave a faint smile. "I heard that fellow has a significant background and was causing some of the leaders at Bin University quite a headache."
"After this incident, he has already applied for a transfer."
Wang Chuan smiled contemptuously. "To not even see something so simple... That man is not cut out for a political career."
Liu Jin chuckled lightly. "Perhaps his patron saw that as well, which is why they tossed him into academia."
"They just didn’t expect the waters of academia to run so deep..."
The group drank two pots of tea, mixing work talk with idle chat until ten o’clock, at which point they dispersed.
Yan Feifan returned to his residence at Zuimo Court, washed up, and went straight to bed.
「The next morning」
Yan Feifan woke up early, washed up, and had breakfast.
Then, accompanied by Feng Jian, he went to Binhai International Airport to travel to Jingcheng.
At 9:30 a.m., as Yan Feifan and Feng Jian walked out of Capital Airport, they saw Zeng Ni waiting to greet them.
As they walked toward a Cadillac minivan parked nearby, they suddenly heard someone shout.
"Dr. Yan Feifan!"
Yan Feifan stopped and looked toward the source of the voice.
A few steps away stood a tall, middle-aged man with a few streaks of white in his black hair. He wore glasses and had a kind face, with long eyebrows, a broad forehead, and a square jaw.
Xv Jiande!
’What is he doing here?’ Yan Feifan thought in surprise.
’Did he come here specifically to see me? Or is this just a coincidence?’
