Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 754 - 753: Sky-High Priced Chinese Medicine

Chapter 754: Chapter 753: Sky-High Priced Chinese Medicine

On Thursday morning, Yan Feifan’s fever broke and his temperature returned to normal. He was discharged from the hospital and returned to his residence at Zuimo Court to recuperate.

Around five in the afternoon, he received a special delivery from the Yu Family of Jingcheng: nine small, pre-brewed packets of herbal medicine.

Along with them came a bill that made Yan Feifan’s eyes go wide.

"Six hundred thousand?!"

The man who delivered the medicine was tall, in his thirties, with a refined, gentlemanly appearance.

Facing a stunned and incredulous Yan Feifan, he explained unhurriedly, "Mr. Yan, this prescription of yours used an entire seventy-year-old wild mountain ginseng, as well as wild tiger bone, which requires special government approval for use."

"The other supplementary herbs were also top-quality, precious medicinal materials. Add to that the house call fee for Mr. Yu..."

"Mr. Yan, this six-hundred-thousand price is a special offer after a very generous discount."

Yan Feifan thought about the elderly Mr. Yu traveling all that way just to perform a diagnosis...

And then he thought about how the previous medicine prepared by the Yu Family had been genuinely effective. He accepted the price.

Still, Yan Feifan couldn’t help but sigh. "Good thing I charge a lot for my own surgeries, otherwise I really couldn’t afford this."

"This is basically paying to stay alive."

The gentlemanly man chuckled. "Mr. Yan, I’ve heard a thing or two about how you charge millions for a single plastic surgery."

"Putting that aside, our herbal medicine is absolutely worth every penny. You get what you pay for, no exceptions!"

"As for its effects in restoring your body and vital energy, you can slowly experience that for yourself after you take it, Mr. Yan."

Yan Feifan was surprised to detect a hint of mockery in the man’s tone. "My plastic surgery skills are worth that price," he said, displeased. "The wealthy people and celebrities who come to me aren’t fools. Their money doesn’t grow on trees."

The moment the words left his mouth, Yan Feifan felt he had overreacted.

’What’s the point of bickering with a delivery guy?’

Yan Feifan continued, "I’ll transfer the medical fee to your pharmacy’s account in the next day or two."

After a pause, Yan Feifan asked, "Did Mr. Yu leave any other instructions or advice?"

The gentlemanly man shook his head. "Mr. Yu didn’t say anything in particular before I came."

"The contraindications for this medication are no different from the instructions for the previous Chinese medicine you took."

"Um..."

The man then introduced himself. "Mr. Yan, my name is Yu Youwen. I’m an associate chief physician in the urology department at Baining Hospital."

"I came by this time for two reasons. One was to drop off the medicine, and the other is to come to the Affiliated Hospital to study phalloplasty under Director Chen Yu and my niece, Yu Suye."

When Yan Feifan heard that the man was a bona fide surgeon, and Su Ye’s elder on top of that, he quickly invited him to sit for some tea.

Yu Youwen, however, explained that his personal belongings had already been sent ahead to Yu Beihua’s place at Shengjing Apartments.

He said he needed to go and get settled, so he wouldn’t impose any longer.

Yan Feifan didn’t insist. After seeing Yu Youwen off, he eagerly took out the small clay pot he had bought specifically for brewing Chinese medicine and placed it on the gas stove to heat up a packet.

"Mr. Yan, why don’t you use the microwave? It’s so much faster and more convenient!" asked Si Lan, who was in the kitchen making dinner.

Yan Feifan explained casually, "Mrs. Lan, a microwave heats things by causing their molecules to oscillate with microwaves."

"This heating method can destroy many of the active ingredients in Chinese medicine, significantly reducing its effectiveness."

Si Lan let out a cry of surprise. "Oh! At my house, we always just take the medicine out of the fridge and heat it directly in the microwave."

"No wonder the Chinese medicine we take never seems to work as well as other people say. The microwave must have been destroying its potency."

Yan Feifan chuckled lightly. "Mrs. Lan, the fact that you shouldn’t use a microwave to heat it was actually something the people at the Yu Family Pharmacy told me."

"I’m just taking their word for it. I’m not certain if it’s actually true."

Mrs. Lan laughed too. "Mr. Yan, you’re a famous doctor. How can you just believe whatever people tell you?"

"Isn’t that what they call taking things at face value?"

Yan Feifan sighed softly. "Chinese medicine is vast and profound. Many of its theories, like meridians and acupoints, have no empirical evidence in clinical anatomy, yet they can genuinely cure illnesses."

"And these strange concoctions of brewed herbs can also have miraculous effects."

"I don’t understand it, so all I can do is accept it all on faith."

As he spoke, the herbal liquid in the clay pot reached a sufficient temperature.

Yan Feifan poured it into a bowl, tested the heat, and let it cool for a moment.

Once the medicine was cool enough to drink, Yan Feifan first gave himself a mental pep talk, then raised the small bowl and drained it in one gulp without the slightest hesitation.

An indescribably bitter taste filled his mouth, making him grimace and squeeze his eyes shut, his brow furrowing tightly.

He quickly scooped two spoonfuls of honey into his mouth, which barely managed to suppress the nauseatingly strange flavor.

’This one small packet of medicine costs sixty or seventy thousand. Spitting out a single mouthful would be like throwing away several thousand.’

Although Yan Feifan wasn’t short on money, he couldn’t be so wasteful, especially since this was life-saving medicine.

He didn’t know if it was a psychological effect or if the medicine was truly working that quickly, but he felt a gurgling heat spread from his stomach and intestines out toward his limbs.

In a short while, his entire body felt toasty and warm, as if he were soaking in a hot spring.

It was quite comfortable, making him feel lazy and want to sleep...

When his sister woke him up for dinner, it was already past eight o’clock in the evening.

At the dinner table, he learned a piece of news from his sister and Su Ye.

The hospital’s disciplinary committee had begun an investigation into the rumor about a patient with a spinal canal tumor paying five hundred thousand to get on the surgery waitlist.

"I estimate this matter won’t be resolved anytime soon."

Yan Ziruo said with an air of authority, "That patient won’t admit to it. Does he not want the surgery anymore?"

"But after the surgery is done and he’s been discharged, it’s hard to say."

Yan Ziruo chuckled. "I read a news story online about a parent who pulled strings to get a teacher to tutor their child. But after the kid graduated, the parent reported the teacher to the education bureau."

"The parent got the tutoring fees back in the end, basically getting the teacher’s services for free."

"Tsk, tsk. It really takes all sorts to make a world these days."

Yu Suye picked up the conversation. "That’s why it’s best to just follow the rules. Don’t be greedy, don’t take what isn’t yours. If you’re upright yourself, you don’t have to be afraid of any kind of petty person."

After a pause, she changed the subject. "Feifan, I’m going to treat Uncle Youwen to a meal in the next couple of days..."

Yan Feifan stated his position directly. "I’ll be there. He’s your elder; I should show him respect."

Yu Suye couldn’t help but give a sweet smile. "Feifan, thank you!"

She then continued, "Beihua told me you didn’t postpone that targeted cosmetic surgery. You still told the person to come to the hospital on Friday to be admitted for the procedure."

"Feifan, that surgery will take at least six or seven hours, won’t it? Your body?"

Meeting the concerned gazes of his sister and Su Ye, Yan Feifan said, "My fever’s gone, and my body has recovered. Especially after drinking that ridiculously expensive herbal medicine, I feel like I have endless energy."

"Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing!"

After a moment, he added slowly, "The more I push work back, the more it piles up. The sooner it’s over, the better."

"I’ve made up my mind. During this Spring Festival, I’m going to take a nice, long vacation for one or two months to properly recuperate."

"But the work I have on my plate right now is really difficult to refuse or delay..."
