Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 779: Once Twice but Not a Third Time

The weather on Sunday wasn’t great. Due to the outer bands of a typhoon, Binhai was experiencing intermittent rain that varied in intensity.

The temperature had also dropped considerably, allowing pedestrians to feel the distinct, rustling chill of autumn.

Aside from a trip to the hospital at one in the afternoon to administer another round of subsonic resonance stimulation therapy to three patients in deep comas, Yan Feifan spent the rest of the day cooped up at home.

A little after three in the afternoon, he received a video call from Song Yi, who was at the planned Phoenix Medical Park.

On the video call, Yan Feifan saw the rolling mountain range in the distance, shrouded in mist and rain, serving as her backdrop. He also noticed Song Yi’s hair was half-drenched from the downpour.

Song Yi told Yan Feifan that she was standing on the future site of the Extraordinary Medical Technology headquarters, a plot of land covering nearly 7,000 square meters.

She had braved the rain to bring an architect for a site inspection, hoping to move forward with the design of the headquarters building as quickly as possible.

Finally, Song Yi told Yan Feifan that the shareholders’ meeting was scheduled for this Wednesday at seven in the evening at the Jinxiu Grand Hotel.

Not long after finishing his call with Song Yi, Yan Feifan received another one from the hospital’s director, Liu Jin.

“Feifan, Mr. Bai’s condition is quite serious. A few of us friends went to see him, and he couldn’t recognize a single one of us. He just stared at us blankly.”

“Feifan, given his current state, what’s your assessment? Do you think this is just temporary? Or…?”

Yan Feifan knew he was talking about Patient Five, who had just regained consciousness yesterday.

He replied cautiously, “Director, Mr. Bai has only been conscious for a day. Given that, and the length of his coma, it’s difficult for me to make a judgment about the extent of his future recovery.”

“All I can say is, I’m not very optimistic.”

Liu Jin let out a long sigh over the phone. “I thought that once he woke up, he could put an end to the chaos in his family and his company. I never expected things to get even messier.”

After a pause, Liu Jin’s tone brightened. “But setting that aside, the fact that you successfully woke him is a great accomplishment in itself.”

“I’ll make sure his family shows their gratitude.”

Yan Feifan chuckled. “That won’t be necessary, Director. Mr. Bai has already contributed so much valuable experimental data for our therapy.”

Liu Jin’s tone became mocking. “With that bunch of money-grubbing relatives of his, whoever inherits the family fortune will probably squander it all anyway.”

“We might as well take this opportunity to have them show a little appreciation. It can be considered their contribution to the advancement of medicine.”

“Anyway, Feifan, you’ve already successfully awakened three patients from deep comas. That’s a success rate of fifty percent.”

“Isn’t it about time you announced your research findings?”

Yan Feifan explained, “Director, Dr. Qiu and I were thinking…”

He then gave Liu Jin a concise summary of his discussion with Tang Jun, the editor-in-chief of the journal, about a special issue.

After Yan Feifan finished, there was a moment of silence on the line before Liu Jin’s voice came through again, slowly.

“That’s a good decision. This way, you’ll get both fame and fortune.”

“However…”

Liu Jin continued his analysis over the phone. “This subsonic-wave-awakening research is more than enough to support a large-scale R&D institution, or even a large specialized hospital.”

“Feifan, our Affiliated Hospital is well-regarded nationally, but it’s a shame that we don’t have a single department that is truly top-of-the-line.”

“Your research into subsonic wave awakening could catapult us into the global spotlight, turning us into a medical sanctuary that families of deep coma patients worldwide would flock to.”

Hearing this, Yan Feifan felt his own perspective had been a bit narrow. ‘I’ve only been considering my own interests, not thinking about things from the hospital’s point of view.’

His thoughts then turned to the Second Affiliated Hospital slated to be built in the Phoenix Medical Park.

Although the environment there was nice, the location was relatively remote. There certainly wouldn’t be many patients seeking treatment in the first few years.

‘If a center for awakening patients from deep comas were established at the Second Affiliated Hospital, it would surely be beneficial to the hospital’s growth.’

“Director, I…”

Yan Feifan was cut off mid-sentence by Liu Jin.

“Feifan, I was being narrow-minded.”

“Publishing this research is an extremely beneficial thing for deep coma patients all over the world.”

“I shouldn’t be so fixated on our hospital’s gains and losses.”

Yan Feifan was rather surprised. Liu Jin had done a complete one-eighty in the blink of an eye.

Yan Feifan switched the phone to his other ear as Liu Jin continued, “Besides, waking and rehabilitating patients in vegetative states isn’t our hospital’s strong suit.”

“Trying to support an entire specialty with just this one research project would be a stretch.”

“I got ahead of myself, I got ahead of myself!”

Liu Jin’s voice brightened again. “Feifan, just do what you think is right.”

“You’ve already brought the hospital so many benefits, both tangible and intangible.”

“We can’t ask any more of you.”

“A hospital’s development depends on everyone’s effort, not on being single-handedly dragged forward by one genius.”

Liu Jin sighed into the phone. “To date, Feifan, you’ve made a name for the Plastic Surgery Center; you’ve developed tumor puncture injection technology and in-vivo nerve cultivation research; you’ve left the Trauma Surgery department with your penis reconstruction procedure; you pioneered a dual-surgeon heart transplant method for Cardiothoracic Surgery; and now there’s this subsonic wave awakening research. You could say you’ve given the Plastic Surgery Center, Neurosurgery, Trauma Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Brain Surgery a chance to reach the next level.”

“Whether or not they can seize these opportunities is up to them…”

After ending his call with Liu Jin, Yan Feifan was struck by how quickly the director had changed his tune, and it left him with much to think about.

‘Sometimes, looking at the same problem from different perspectives can lead to completely different solutions.’

‘It seems that from now on, I should try to get opinions from multiple viewpoints before making any important decisions.’

After reflecting for a moment, Yan Feifan threw himself back into his work.

The upcoming week was going to be a big one. He had a patient from the United States, and he had to go to Jingcheng over the weekend for a freelance surgery. It was more than enough to keep Yan Feifan busy…

Later that night, after eleven, Liao Guili was working in his study when Liao Ziqiang finally returned home.

He didn’t smell smoke or alcohol on his son, and seeing the exhaustion on the young man’s face, the displeasure in his heart subsided significantly.

‘Since returning from the United States, his son really has changed a lot. He’s become diligent and driven.’

“Ziqiang, drop the project you’re working on. Find a new one.”

“Why?” Liao Ziqiang looked surprised and confused.

Liao Guili snorted. “I only found out today that the company you’re targeting belongs to Yan Feifan.”

“Ziqiang, you’re acting out of spite. I don’t think you can succeed by operating this way.”

“Also, someone passed a message to me today. I was advised not to engage in vicious competition with that kid’s company.”

Liao Ziqiang quickly explained, “Dad, I won’t deny that personal feelings are a part of it, but I am serious about this venture.”

“Dad, you’ve seen the feasibility report. Didn’t you praise it for being so thorough and detailed?”

“As for vicious competition…”

Liao Ziqiang explained further, “Dad, I’ve already thought it through. I’ll give up on the domestic market and focus on international expansion.”

“I’ve already contacted a friend of mine abroad whose family is in the medical equipment sales business.”

“He’s very interested in the infusion controller and expressed a strong interest in collaborating.”

“Dad, they’re focused on the domestic market right now. They don’t have the bandwidth to even consider international markets.”

“This product is very popular domestically. In places like Japan, South Korea, Europe and America, where winter conditions are similar to ours, there’s definitely a huge market for it.”

Seeing his father’s expression soften, Liao Ziqiang pressed on. “Dad, in this day and age of business, where are there any completely untapped markets left?”

“No matter what project I get into, it’s going to involve taking a piece of someone else’s pie and competing with them.”

“So if someone sends a warning then, are you going to tell me to give up, too?”

Liao Guili hesitated for a moment before saying, “Son, don’t underestimate the influence of a famous doctor, especially one who has a renowned hospital standing behind him.”

Liao Ziqiang chuckled. “Dad, over all these years, we’ve only had to ask the Affiliated Hospital for favors… and strictly speaking, we’ve only had to ask *that kid* twice.”

“One time was a success, the other was a failure.”

“There won’t be a third time. Dad, what do you think the chances are that we’ll ever have to go begging to that kid for a third time?”
