Yan Feifan hadn’t expected it. Some time had passed since Xv Jiande had concocted the so-called “International Training Program for a Hundred Young Doctors” through a series of complex maneuvers just to trick him into going abroad. Only now were the negative repercussions starting to surface.
He’d had his suspicions before, after hearing that the list of participants for the training program in Jingcheng had been more or less decided internally.
‘Perhaps, when those people found out they couldn’t go abroad for the training, they wouldn’t blame the schemer behind it all. They would just point their fingers at me, the one who caused the program’s cancellation.’
Unexpectedly, Yan Feifan’s guess had come true.
Worse, a young doctor had used his own life as a form of protest.
However, Yan Feifan didn’t take the young doctor’s accusation to heart.
‘Damn it, I didn’t do anything wrong.’
Setting aside the rights and wrongs of the situation, the young doctor had dumped all the blame for his own choices and various misfortunes onto Yan Feifan. Calling him a psychologically immature man-child wouldn’t be an exaggeration at all…
The next day, a Monday, Yan Feifan went to report to Mr. Liang in the Cardiac Surgery Department of the Affiliated Hospital, just as he always did.
Walking into the department head’s office, Yan Feifan discovered that the five bosses were all present—not a single one was missing.
He quickly greeted each of them with the deference of a student.
After the round of greetings, Liang Zhao Kui spoke up. “Now that Feifan is here, let’s get down to business.”
“First, about the surgical training theater. We’ve tallied the number of attendees for the observation seminar, and it’s already over three hundred and fifty people.”
“The largest surgical theater in our hospital can only hold less than three hundred people.”
“Does anyone have a solution?”
Zhang Shi’an said, “What if we hire someone to build a temporary observation theater, like a circus tent?”
Gu Lin immediately shot it down. “Never mind the considerable expense, the viewing experience would be terrible. Plus, there would be safety hazards.”
“Besides, our hospital doesn’t even have a suitable open space that large.”
Ni Leixing suggested, “What about borrowing a venue from the medical school?”
“I seem to recall they have an enormous surgical observation theater over there.”
“Am I right about that?”
Before anyone could confirm, Liang Zhao Kui replied in a grim tone, “This is our department’s event. We are not involving the medical school.”
Seeing he was adamant, the others in the office dropped the subject of the medical school.
The medical school and the Affiliated Hospital had a very close relationship.
Many professors from the medical school regularly came to the Affiliated Hospital to hold clinics, treat patients, and conduct clinical trials.
Likewise, many doctors from the Affiliated Hospital held teaching positions at the medical school, where they regularly went to teach classes and give lectures.
However, while the two institutions had collaborative projects, their research was largely independent.
Furthermore, due to some historical reasons, the Affiliated Hospital even had its own graduate school that independently enrolled students directly from undergraduate programs.
As for the medical school, its current enrollment consisted of either eight-year integrated bachelor’s-master’s-doctoral programs or five-year integrated bachelor’s-master’s programs in specialized fields like medical technology.
This created a competitive relationship between the Affiliated Hospital and the medical school in both research and teaching.
As for Liang Zhao Kui himself, many years prior, he’d had a major conflict with a doctoral advisor from the medical school over a research project, and the fallout had been quite significant.
This left him with a lasting grudge against the medical school.
Deng Chunming mused, “I have a suggestion. We could set up a secondary viewing room as an overflow venue.”
“We could cover an entire wall with high-definition screens to live-stream the surgery. The viewing experience might not be any worse than being in the actual theater.”
Liang Zhao Kui nodded slightly and smiled. “That’s an excellent idea. A massive, high-definition screen.”
He then took the idea a step further. “We can go even further and set up a live broadcast of the surgery on medical websites, both domestic and international. That way, interested surgeons from all over the world who can’t attend in person can watch the live stream online…”
Mr. Deng’s proposal, along with Mr. Liang’s addition, received the enthusiastic approval of everyone in the office.
And just like that, the solution to the surgical theater’s capacity issue was settled.
“There’s one more thing…”
Liang Zhao Kui continued, “Over the past few days, I’m sure all of you, like me, have received numerous requests from people wanting to come and study with us.”
Seeing Gu Lin, Ni Leixing, and the others nod, he went on, “Their objective is simple and direct: they want to come and learn our dual-surgeon technique.”
“I’ve done some calculations. To avoid impacting the quality of the training and interfering with our daily work, we can probably only take on four or five pairs of doctors at a time for this training.”
“My plan is for us to give them two or three hands-on practice sessions, and then have them observe two of our surgeries in the OR. That should be about right.”
“The whole thing should take about a month.”
After a brief pause, Liang Zhao Kui asked, “So, what do you all think is an appropriate training fee?”
“Per person or per pair?” Gu Lin asked to clarify.
Liang Zhao Kui mused, “Per pair. They have to come in pairs to learn, since one person can’t perform this surgery alone.”
Gu Lin smiled. “We sell a single one of our surgical videos for fifty thousand. We certainly can’t set the price too low for a month-long training program.”
“Besides, hospital cardiac surgery departments aren’t hurting for money.”
“How about five hundred thousand?”
Deng Chunming objected, “Isn’t that a bit too high?”
“It’s only for a month, and most of the people coming to learn will be acquaintances. We have some sort of relationship with most of them.”
After some discussion, the five bosses set the training fee at two hundred thousand per pair.
Even if a hospital only sent one person, the fee was still two hundred thousand!
If the trainees were foreigners, they would be treated differently: the fee became one hundred thousand US Dollars per pair.
Mr. Liang also brought up the question of what commission would be appropriate for Yan Feifan, since he was the one who developed the technique.
Yan Feifan flatly refused.
He was here in the cardiac surgery department to learn.
The five bosses were selflessly pouring all their effort into teaching him; how could he possibly profit from their labor in training others?
The five bosses were all gratified by Yan Feifan’s attitude…
After the morning meeting, Yan Feifan followed Dr. Ni Leixing to the operating room.
Today, he would be acting as a surgical assistant to learn a highly complex heart valve repair procedure.
This was a relatively common type of procedure in cardiac surgery.
Shortly after two in the afternoon, having completed the surgery and taken a brief rest, Yan Feifan walked out of the surgical area’s isolation doors and was immediately swarmed by several people.
Yan Feifan looked at Duan Yu and Feng Jian, who were protectively flanking him. Beyond them, three hospital security guards had formed another line of defense.
“What’s going on?”
“You all look like you’re bracing for an attack. Is someone trying to harm me?”
“Mr. Yan, there’s been a serious hospital protest!”
Duan Yu elaborated, “Around noon, a dozen or so people showed up at the hospital with signs and banners. They’re claiming you’re responsible for their son’s death and are demanding you take accountability.”
“When hospital security tried to disperse them, a rather intense conflict broke out. Four people were injured.”
“The police have gotten involved.”
“We’re worried they might still have people hiding in the crowds, waiting to harm you.”
“Better safe than sorry!”
Yan Feifan asked, “The family of the doctor who committed suicide?”
Duan Yu nodded, then added, “Mr. Yan, let’s get back to your office first and talk there…”
