The Abandoned Daughter's Second Chance

Chapter 256 - 235: Feeling Sorry

Chapter 256: Chapter 235: Feeling Sorry

She had just come in to get a change of clothes. The light filtering in from the living room was bright enough, so she hadn’t turned on the light in her room. And since Gu Shaojun had hung up a new mosquito net, she hadn’t looked too closely. Who would have thought that he hadn’t just hung up a mosquito net—he had practically torn her entire bed apart!

’Why did I fold the quilt so fancily and place it in the middle of the bed? Because I’d gotten my period unexpectedly on Monday and wasn’t prepared, so I stained the sheet! I’ve also had to prepare for several quizzes these past couple of days, so I just covered the spot with a towel. I was planning on taking care of it and washing it on Saturday. Who could have predicted Gu Shaojun would show up and act so out of the ordinary? He’s nosier than a meddling old woman...’

Gu Shaojun stumbled back from Xiao Man’s push, a little surprised. ’Even caught off guard,’ he thought, ’this girl is surprisingly strong.’

"The diary under your pillow? I put it in the middle drawer of your desk. From now on, no more writing in your diary while lying on the bed. It puts pressure on your heart and isn’t good for you. You’ve already gotten ink on your bedsheets and pillowcase. Writing and reading should be done at your desk. When you get into bed, it’s for sleeping, period!"

"But that’s just my habit!"

"It’s a bad habit, and you need to break it!"

"Did... did you read my diary?"

Gu Shaojun chuckled. "Don’t worry. I respect people’s privacy. I just gave the diary and the drawer a quick look; I didn’t read anything. I’ll install a lock on the drawer for you tomorrow, okay?"

Xiao Man: ...

’Who needs a lock? All my truly important things are in the Treasure Pearl Space anyway. As for that diary, he can read it for all I care. My teacher requires us to write at least five hundred words every day to practice our writing skills. When I have time and I’m in a good mood, I might write about my feelings on life. Otherwise, I just write a dry log of my day.’

Gu Shaojun straightened out the bedding and had Xiao Man lie down. "Get some rest. You have to be up early for school tomorrow."

Xiao Man poked at the mosquito net disdainfully. "I don’t like this thing. I feel like I can’t breathe properly when it’s down."

Gu Shaojun frowned. "You have trouble breathing just because of the mosquito net? Could there be something wrong? We’ll take the day off tomorrow and go to Wancheng Hospital for a check-up. If not there, we can go to the provincial city..."

Xiao Man was speechless. ’Hello? Are we even on the same wavelength? I just don’t like mosquito nets! And does he have any idea who lives here? As if I’d let mosquitoes just buzz right in.’

"I’m studying medicine myself. There’s nothing wrong with me!"

"So you really don’t want the net? But there are mosquitoes."

"There aren’t any mosquitoes here. If you don’t believe me, just go to sleep. See if you wake up with any bites tomorrow morning."

"Really?"

"I’m not lying to you. See that sachet hanging on the curtain? It’s a medicinal pouch I made. It doesn’t just repel mosquitoes; it keeps other bugs and ants away, too. Hao Hao has one in his room as well."

"Oh, I see... Okay then, that puts my mind at ease. Sleep well." Gu Shaojun quickly walked out of Xiao Man’s room, gently pulling the door closed behind him.

The moment he left, however, Xiao Man got out of bed again and quietly slid the bolt on her door shut.

This precaution wasn’t because she didn’t trust him; she just needed to enter her Space. If he suddenly came back in and found her gone, heaven knows what kind of scene he would cause.

She had just told him she needed to have her own secrets, and she had no intention of revealing them so easily.

While Xiao Man was tending to her pastoral affairs in the Treasure Pearl Space and inspecting her grove of medicinal herbs, Gu Shaojun was in the bathroom, showering and washing clothes!

"We’ll be short on time after breakfast. How about I braid your hair for you?"

"No!"

"Fine, braid it yourself. Here, give me the washbasin. I’ll go dish out the food. Hurry up!"

The two sat across from each other at the table, eating breakfast. Gu Shaojun had made boiled noodles with egg again, and he plucked the egg from his own bowl and placed it in hers. "Eat more eggs. They’re good for your brain."

Xiao Man put it back in his bowl and retorted, "If I eat too many, I’ll turn into a dummy!"

"Heh, I wonder what Mo Xiaoman would look like as a dummy? Pretty cute, I bet, right?"

"Not cute at all! Just dumb, stupid, and hideous!" Xiao Man looked up and met his gaze seriously. "Just really, really ugly! So ugly you wouldn’t even want to look at me!"

Gu Shaojun gazed at Xiao Man with a smile. "It doesn’t matter how ugly you get. As long as it’s you, I’m fine with it. The person I like, the person I’ve set my heart on... my feelings won’t change because of appearances. By that same token, if I became dumb and ugly, I wouldn’t want you to despise me or abandon me."

Xiao Man tilted her head. "But what if you did become like that, and I really decided I didn’t want you anymore?"

Gu Shaojun froze for a moment. He lowered his gaze in thought, his expression growing serious. "I don’t know. I’d be heartbroken, for sure. I probably couldn’t go on living... like that guy... Liang Shanbo. I’d turn into a butterfly and follow you!"

His voice was slow, and it was actually tinged with a hint of sorrow, but Xiao Man wasn’t moved in the slightest. With a "PFFT," she burst out laughing.

Gu Shaojun was speechless. ’This girl,’ he thought, ’couldn’t you have a little compassion? How can you laugh after hurting someone’s feelings!’

"Is it that funny?"

"Yup! I just can’t picture it. What would a Gu Shaojun butterfly look like? Would it be army-green? Would it wear collar pins, too?"

"I’m going to get some pickles. Hurry up and eat, or we’ll be late!"

"And here I thought you were about to get mad and grab me."

Gu Shaojun: ...
