Chapter 537: Chapter 181: The 80s’ High-Maintenance Girl, Forced to Operate as a Top Student (16)

’She had just taken in a granddaughter; good days were ahead!’

When her father, husband, and son had passed away one after another, the old woman had cried in sorrow, but she had quickly adjusted and carried on with life.

Birth, old age, sickness, and death are a natural part of life. The dead vanish without a trace, while the living must continue to carry their burdens forward.

She had always gritted her teeth and silently endured it all. But after walking alone in solitude for so long, she had finally found an oasis, only for fate to now tell her it was all a mirage.

The old woman suddenly felt that her entire life had become a joke!

Just as the truck was about to slam into her, a small hand gave her a hard tug. The old woman and the little girl rolled on the ground several times, narrowly dodging the truck’s heavy wheels just before they would have been crushed.

The driver of the truck was an experienced one. Instead of stopping as he neared them, he accelerated. His intentions were clear to anyone with eyes to see.

Having missed his target, there was no reason to brake suddenly. As a result, the truck plowed straight into a tree trunk, getting wedged between two old trees!

The old woman was so scared her heart nearly stopped, but she ignored her own scrapes, scrambled to her feet, and grabbed the little girl to check her over from head to toe.

"You reckless girl! Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

The little girl wasn’t wearing much in the summer heat, revealing long, slender arms and legs. Now, her body was covered in just as many scrapes as the old woman’s, and the joints in her hands and feet were red and swollen.

The old woman’s eyes filled with hot tears, her heart aching for the girl.

Sheng Leyun smiled and said, "I’m fine, Grandma. What kid doesn’t get a few bumps and bruises? It’ll heal in a couple of days. But what about you? Did you break any bones?"

"Didn’t you say you have money? Let’s not do this dangerous work anymore, okay?"

"My dad left me a lot of money, and I’m good at making it too. You don’t have to worry."

"And you... it’s a good thing I was here to pull you away today. Otherwise, I... I’d be a poor, unwanted little thing all over again, wouldn’t I?"

"Grandma..."

The old woman’s heart felt a mix of sourness and warmth. Steeling herself, she nodded. "Alright. Grandma won’t sweep the streets anymore. I’ll glue more paper boxes at home. That’ll be enough for the two of us to have steamed buns to eat."

The miserable truck driver had hit his head on the windshield. Blood was GUSHING down, and since both his doors were jammed, he couldn’t even attempt to flee!

Such a huge commotion naturally drew the attention of the morning exercisers and early-bird market-goers. A crowd quickly gathered around.

The old woman pulled Sheng Leyun close, wiped her eyes, and began to wail, "Oh, heavens! That man was trying to kill this old woman..."

"That truck came straight for me! If my good granddaughter hadn’t pulled me away, I’d be nothing but a bloody pulp under those wheels by now..."

"I’m just an old woman. I never make enemies with anyone. I just sweep the streets properly, contributing to the community, and still, someone uses me for target practice..."

Sheng Leyun also started to sob. "I heard people say this is a main road. Other than buses and cars, trucks aren’t allowed here."

"The delivery vehicles for the work units all use the two side roads next to this one. I was lucky I’d heard someone mention that. I thought it was strange, so I ran over. Otherwise," she said through her sobs, "otherwise, imagine what would have happened to Grandma!"

Hearing this, the crowd felt a chill run down their spines.

The grandmother and granddaughter’s analysis was logical, and every word made sense.

Before long, the comrades from the station arrived. Everyone worked together, putting all their strength into pushing the deformed front of the truck out from between the two trees, bit by bit.

By this time, the driver was slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious.

Sheng Leyun glanced at the door locks, then at the exposed wires under the driver’s seat. She pursed her lips as the crowd worked to pull the driver out.

She struck a match and tossed it directly onto the man’s clothes.

The flames licked at his clothes. The searing heat made the man, who was only pretending to be unconscious, let out a high-pitched HOWL. He broke free from the people supporting him and rolled back and forth on the ground to smother the fire.

The crowd stared, stunned. Seeing the man so agile and full of life, how could he possibly be seriously injured?

The man’s body went rigid. He knew he couldn’t pretend to be unconscious any longer.

He gritted his teeth and glared at Sheng Leyun. "You vicious little girl! Why did you set me on fire?"

"It’s my first time delivering goods to the Capital City. I didn’t know the roads. I drove all night and was exhausted, so I lost control of the steering wheel."

"It’s not like I tried to hit the old woman on purpose..."

In just a few sentences, the man had completely shirked all responsibility. Everyone now knew he had heard every word they’d said earlier.

They just couldn’t tell if he was telling the truth or if he had fabricated a perfect excuse based on what the grandmother and granddaughter had said.

Sheng Leyun pressed her lips together firmly and looked at the officer in the peaked cap. "Officer, I suspect he’s a thief, and that he was instructed by someone to harm my grandmother!"
