Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 293 - 283: Rescuing Bo Niou

Chapter 293: Chapter 283: Rescuing Bo Niou

As Tang Mo and Mr. Hu moved swiftly, the city scenery gradually began to change.

The once-dense urban buildings started to thin out, like the transition from a city center to the suburbs, changing little by little.

The final location for the Euthanasia Room, according to the system, was on a stretch of flat, open land. A few buildings stood in the center of the plain. Behind them were large glass houses where edible plants were artificially cultivated.

Beside the glass houses were several large warehouses. Tang Mo guessed this must be where they raised livestock like breeding pigs for meat production.

The most urgent task now was to find Bo Niou. Tang Mo led Mr. Hu directly into the building with the large words "Euthanasia Room" written on it.

Pushing the door open, they walked into a room that was entirely white. White walls, white windowsills, white tables and chairs, white curtains, and a person dressed in white.

"Hello, may I help you?"

Hearing the door open, the woman in white, who had been working with her head down, looked up and asked with a smile.

This wasn’t the cold, cruel place Tang Mo had imagined. Instead, it resembled a clinic or hospital from the old days.

"Hello, I’d like to ask, was a dog just brought in?"

"Yes, a dog was brought in. I haven’t seen one that big in a long time."

The woman in white wasn’t surprised at all; she even seemed to be sharing this tidbit with them.

"Where is it? We’d also like to see a real dog."

Of course, Tang Mo wasn’t going to tell the woman she was here to find the dog and take it away. She pretended that she and Mr. Hu were just curious citizens who wanted to see a real dog.

"It’s already been taken away. If you hurry, you might still be able to see its complete corpse. Any later, and there will be nothing left to see."

"Which building is it in now?"

Tang Mo tried her best to suppress the urgency in her voice so she wouldn’t sound so anxious.

Mr. Hu could barely control the expression on his face. He turned slightly, hiding his face behind Tang Mo so the woman behind the desk couldn’t see him.

But despite these strange people suddenly bursting in, the woman in white showed no sign of wariness or suspicion. She maintained her smile the entire time, just like those uniformed law enforcement officers.

"The one next to the glass houses."

The woman in white was even kind enough to point out the window.

"Thanks."

The word of thanks was barely out of Tang Mo’s mouth before she grabbed Mr. Hu and bolted out of the room, running in the direction the woman had pointed.

Before they could even enter the building, they heard a huge rumbling sound.

It was the sound of a machine running.

Tang Mo kicked the door open. The first thing she saw was a man in a uniform holding something, about to throw it into a giant grinder in front of him.

"Stop!"

Before Tang Mo could react, Mr. Hu, who had been standing silently behind her, rushed forward. He wrapped his arms tightly around the uniformed man to stop him, and the two of them crashed heavily to the ground.

"What are you doing?"

The uniformed man, held in Mr. Hu’s embrace, was utterly baffled. He dropped what he was holding and struggled to get up from Mr. Hu’s arms.

Only after he stood up did Tang Mo get a clear look at what he had been about to throw into the grinder. It was a pile of plant stalks and leaves of a kind she had never seen before, probably one of the species grown in the glass houses.

But among the pile of identical stalks and leaves, there was one outlier that looked familiar to Tang Mo: a slender, weak, green plant, complete with its roots.

It was the same little green plant Tang Mo had seen on the street before, the one that had been quickly cleared away by the workers.

"Where’s the dog?"

’This must be the place where they actually carry out the procedures for the Humane Euthanasia Room,’ Tang Mo thought. ’Except...’

Tang Mo looked at the giant grinder.

’It doesn’t seem particularly humane.’

"The dog? Right! Where did that dog go?"

Both Mr. Hu and Tang Mo followed the uniformed man’s gaze to a cage in the corner, about a cubic meter in size. The cage door was wide open, and its contents were long gone.

Seeing the open cage door, both Tang Mo and Mr. Hu breathed a sigh of relief.

’Thank goodness, we weren’t too late. Bo Niou is still alive.’

That was right. Bo Niou wasn’t some pampered pet. She had been through a lot with Xiao Fei, hiding and fleeing through many places. She was a dog who had seen it all. Waiting passively for death was impossible for her; seizing any chance to escape was the kind of wisdom a dog who had survived the apocalypse for several years ought to have.

"As long as she’s alive, that’s what matters. Let’s go, we’ll search the area."

Tang Mo said to Mr. Hu, who was still on the floor, the worry on his brow finally smoothing out.

She was still wary of this unknown world and didn’t dare to use her spiritual power over a large area, so for now, they would have to search for Bo Niou manually.

Although dogs have a good sense of direction, Bo Niou had just arrived in this strange world and had been transported here in a vehicle the whole way. It was absolutely impossible to expect her to find her way back to their villa on her own.

Besides, Tang Mo didn’t want Bo Niou to run back alone.

Compared to this open area, the city was teeming with surveillance cameras. If Bo Niou appeared under any of those cameras, getting caught again would be a matter of minutes.

Tang Mo reached out a hand to pull Mr. Hu up.

It was a hard fall, but for a Power Attribute Superpower User, it was nothing.

Time was still tight. But just as Tang Mo opened the door to leave, she heard Mr. Hu shout.

"Wait!"

Tang Mo turned around to see Mr. Hu run over and rummage through the things the uniformed man had dropped.

Then, very quickly, Mr. Hu carefully wrapped the green plant Tang Mo recognized in his jacket and held it in his arms.

"Let’s go."

"Hold on, that plant is not supposed to exist! You can’t take it!" The uniformed man tried to stop Mr. Hu, grabbing his arm.

"Not supposed to exist? I think you’re the one who’s not supposed to exist!"

He kicked the uniformed man. It was hard to say whether Mr. Hu’s kick was too strong or if the uniformed man had simply never considered fighting back, but he was sent flying and collapsed into a sitting position a good distance away.

This was the most masculine Tang Mo had ever seen Mr. Hu act. It was also the first time she had ever seen him lose his temper or even get physical with someone. It was a complete departure from his usual gentle, soft-spoken image.

Tang Mo looked at the green plant Mr. Hu was holding...

’My last escape from the Illusion Realm had something to do with encountering that plant,’ she thought. ’Maybe bringing Mr. Hu here really was the right decision.’
