Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 492: Extra - : An Yang

An Yang had always been the model child everyone else was compared to. His family background, looks, academics, and appearance were all top-notch.

He was born into a scholarly family, where he was taught from a young age to study hard, be a good person, and grow up to be a successful and refined gentleman.

Before the apocalypse, his life went very smoothly. He got into the best university, became class president, and joined numerous student organizations as a leader.

His future was so bright it was practically a given; he had nothing to worry about.

But after the apocalypse arrived, everything changed.

When the apocalypse first began, An Yang was panicked, but he quickly calmed himself. He methodically organized his classmates for self-preservation, personally rescuing many of them and uniting them into a single group.

At the time, An Yang believed that as long as he had sufficient leadership skills, everyone would listen to him. He thought that if he just made the right decisions, everything would turn out for the best.

But that wasn’t how things turned out.

An Yang was outstanding, but it was the excellence of a student. He had never experienced what real society was like, so he didn’t understand the depths of the human heart.

The emergence of superpowers created a new hierarchy among the students, who had all once stood on the same starting line.

Those with superpowers and supplies had a greater means of survival, and with it, the power to be arrogant.

No one wanted to give their chance at survival to someone else.

An Yang quickly realized this. He began to change his strategy, adapting to the rules of this new apocalyptic world. He made compromises, did many things he was unwilling to do, and made excruciating choices.

By the end of his transformation, An Yang had even forgotten whether he had originally wanted to make things better for everyone, or if he had always been such a selfish, vicious person.

The old rules of society faded. Respect for seniority, status, and even emotions no longer mattered as much.

Strength was all that mattered, and the exchange of benefits reigned supreme.

Because of this, An Yang lost his chance to be with the person he loved most.

He and Song Qing had originally liked each other. An Yang knew this.

But at the time, he just couldn’t give up Wenqing. He didn’t like that stupid, arrogant woman, but the lure of her Space superpower was simply too great—so great he was unable to resist.

But later, when he saw Song Qing again at the base, An Yang finally realized what he had given up.

The benefits of forming a connection with the base’s leader were far greater than anything he could gain from Wenqing.

An Yang was filled with regret. He wanted to start over, but it was already too late.

Once a person is blinded by self-interest, it’s hard to see the bigger picture, and too much is lost along the way.

But having come this far, no one was willing to give up.

Unwilling to be trodden upon by so many others, An Yang used his leadership skills to form a new team at the base and began taking on missions.

Thanks to his own considerable abilities and the help of Wenqing’s Space, his team grew stronger by the day.

But An Yang wasn’t satisfied with this. He began using violent and insidious methods to rob and absorb smaller groups in the wilderness, all to expand his own power.

By then, he had long forgotten that he had first compromised his principles with the intention of saving more people.

He had become someone he no longer recognized, with only a single thought in his mind: ‘I will climb to the top of the pyramid and become a man others look up to.’

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned.

There was always someone stronger. It seemed that no matter how hard he tried, it was useless. The gap in Talent was so great that he couldn’t even break into the top one hundred on the Huaxia rankings.

Seeing that the two people at the very top of the pyramid were both his former classmates, the resentment in An Yang’s heart was amplified endlessly, and he began to grow even more frantic.

An Yang’s family members were all teachers with poor physical constitutions. When the apocalypse began, they didn’t awaken any superpowers and quickly died in the initial cataclysm.

When An Yang finally left the school and returned home six months later, he didn’t even get to see his family.

The girl he liked had married into a powerful family at the base; he heard she was very happy.

Her happiness was jarring to him.

‘I should have had a much brighter future. I’m the one who should be sitting in that position, envied and praised by all.’

‘I was born one of heaven’s chosen. How can I be struggling in this mire, reduced to being just another ordinary person?’

His madness caused him to gradually lose his sanity. After Wenqing lost her Space and the other team members’ superpowers slowly surpassed his, An Yang, with his now-average superpower, was kicked out of his own team.

He chose a path of no return: frantically absorbing Crystal Cores.

Even though he knew that Crystal Stones were more beneficial to the human body and caused less harm, An Yang had no other choice at the time. He simply couldn’t get his hands on any Crystal Stones.

His only option was to frantically hunt mutant beasts and absorb every Crystal Core and low-level abnormal treasure he could find.

This method caused An Yang’s superpower to increase rapidly. Exhilarated, he was no longer satisfied with the speed at which he could acquire Crystal Cores on his own.

So he resorted to an even more despicable method: setting traps in the jungle and murdering others for their loot.

The wealth he plundered through his madness caused his Superpower attribute to skyrocket, but the accompanying side effects were immense.

The impurities in those Basic Crystal Cores were just too numerous. After absorbing so many, An Yang’s body became completely saturated, unable to take in any more.

His physical condition deteriorated, reaching the point where his body could barely handle the meager amount of superpower he possessed.

He was on the verge of becoming completely useless.

But how could An Yang accept his fate?

Since he could no longer absorb Basic Crystal Cores, he set his sights on High-level ones.

He couldn’t defeat superpower users who possessed High-level Crystal Cores, so his only option was to go after Advanced Mutant Beasts by himself.

An Yang’s reputation was in tatters; he couldn’t find a single person willing to partner with him.

Blinded by impulse, An Yang completely disregarded the fact that he wasn’t strong enough to face such a behemoth alone.

In the end, he died in the jaws of an Advanced Mutant Beast.

In his final moment, as he faced death, An Yang couldn’t even feel the pain. For a brief instant, his mind seemed to regain its clarity.

He remembered his father, a gentle and knowledgeable middle-aged man, patting his shoulder and telling him that when he grew up, he should become a person useful to society.

He remembered the lovely, smiling faces of his classmates, looking at him with admiration and joy as they called him “class president.”

He remembered every teacher who had been fond of him, and the girl he’d loved, who had loved him back…

An Yang closed his eyes.

‘He didn’t know exactly where he had gone wrong. He only knew that none of this was right.’

‘If things are wrong from the very beginning, then all your efforts are in vain.’

‘And now, it was time to put an end to this mistake.’
