Chapter 1787: Young Generation Extra (45): New Year’s Eve, Surprise, You’ve Provoked Me

With New Year’s Day approaching, people at Yan Group clearly felt Yan Chi was in a bad mood.

He was already a man who rarely smiled, and with a stern face, he looked especially cold and intimidating.

"What’s wrong with Mr. Xiaoyan recently? This year’s performance has been great; when I took him the report, his expression was enough to scare someone to death."

"Last time at the department meeting, he suddenly appeared and just sat there without moving. Our department head turned pale, thinking we had somehow offended him."

"I don’t think it’s work-related. Could it be that his wife has been urging him to go on dates and get married again recently?"

"It’s possible. I heard that this New Year’s Day, the third master’s family is coming. That young third master has found someone to be with, you see. The grandchild is in love, but the son doesn’t have a partner, so the wife must be anxious."

...

Within the company, employees were speculating, but no one knew exactly why Yan Chi was in a bad mood.

While Yan Chi stayed in the office, the computer was on, yet he didn’t have the heart to work.

He initially thought, when his sister’s family came for New Year’s Day, he’d use the chance to introduce Jiang Ruan to his family.

Yet, the girl said she was going to a New Year’s Eve concert with three roommates, as a certain station’s New Year’s Eve gala was set in a city near Nanjiang.

The girls probably made the plan last year, and it would definitely take two or three days to go back and forth. Generally, New Year’s Eve events end in the early hours, then it’s back to the hotel to rest, and New Year’s Day would probably be spent out of town.

With the girls together, Yan Chi wasn’t in a position to go along, and he feared disturbing her fun, so he didn’t bring up the idea of meeting the family.

Since the original plan didn’t realize, how could Yan Chi be in a good mood?

**

The last day of December

Yan Chi had lunch with Jiang Ruan, then sent her and the roommates to the high-speed rail station. The nearby city was about an hour or so away, making it convenient. The roommates thanked him and carried their luggage out of the car, but Jiang Ruan sat in the passenger seat, tilting her head to glance at Yan Chi.

"Senior, are you okay?"

Jiang Ruan wasn’t oblivious; she could feel Yan Chi’s bad mood lately.

Even though he usually kept a cool demeanor, after spending enough time together, you would be able to sense something off, even if he didn’t say anything.

"I’m fine."

Yan Chi knew she had plans with her roommates, so he didn’t mention his own New Year’s plans to her, not wanting her to feel pressured or burdened.

"Is it because I’m going out with my roommates and can’t be with you for New Year’s?" Yan Chi never mentioned meeting the family, so Jiang Ruan naturally didn’t know and thought it was something else.

"No, hurry and get out of the car, your roommates are waiting for you."

"I’ll rush back after the concert. Wait for me." Jiang Ruan unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over to kiss him swiftly on the cheek before getting out of the car. Her roommates had already helped her carry her luggage, so there was no need for Yan Chi to step out.

Yan Chi watched them enter the station before driving away.

Crossing into New Year’s Day, it counts as New Year, although in the minds of the elders, it’s not comparable to the lunar New Year with its customs and traditions, so Yan Chi didn’t go home, instead he returned to the company.

Jiang Ruan sat on the high-speed rail, while a few roommates were enthusiastically discussing the evening’s New Year’s Eve concert, but she was a bit disinterested.

She always felt Yan Chi was odd, and when she asked, he’d always say nothing was wrong.

Until her roommate called her and she snapped out of it, "Huh? What is it?"

"We’ve called you so many times! What are you daydreaming about? Have you started missing Senior Yan already since you just parted for a short while?" her roommate teased her.

Jiang Ruan chuckled, "Yeah, thinking of him."

The girls instantly felt overwhelmed by her words.

...

As night fell, neon lights for celebrating New Year’s Day lit up outside Yan Group, while the entire building stood dark except for the top floor where lights remained on; the security guards on duty sat together chatting.

"It’s holiday time, yet Mr. Xiaoyan isn’t leaving? He works too hard."

"Still young indeed."

Yan Chi always felt he wasn’t the sentimental or clingy type. During past festivals, if he wasn’t accompanying his parents or with friends, he was alone, and didn’t find it lonely, but this year felt a bit desolate.

Jiang Ruan arrived at the New Year’s Eve concert site of a certain station. Their seats were a bit far from the stage, yet the girls were quite happy.

From time to time, she would send him some live videos. Though the phone’s camera wobbled intensely, Yan Chi watched them with a knowing smile.

Time quickly slipped past midnight. Fireworks and firecrackers were banned in Nanjiang, so there were no soaring fireworks outside, but at the seaside, there were crowds celebrating. It seemed you could still hear the distant cheers and shouts.
