Chapter 1791: New Year’s Day, Yan Family, Looks Familiar
"Senior..." Jiang Ruan pressed her lips tightly. "If I go back with you like this, going empty?handed... isn’t that a bit inappropriate?"
"It’s almost noon already, I haven’t prepared anything at all."
When it came to meeting the parents, Yan Chi had always tried his best to take care of her feelings. Now that Jiang Ruan had finally relented, his mood was naturally rather complicated.
"It’s fine, my parents don’t care about that kind of thing."
"That won’t do. I need to tidy myself up quickly, it’s better to buy some things."
Right now Jiang Ruan could only feel glad that she’d originally planned to go out with her roommates, so the clothes she’d prepared were all fairly decent and pretty. She picked out a simple, elegant dress, the hem edged with green embroidered trim.
Like a begonia in early spring, fresh and bright after the rain.
"Is this dress okay?" Jiang Ruan could only ask for Yan Chi’s opinion now.
"Looks great."
"Then let’s go to the mall."
**
The whole meeting?the?parents affair had truly come out of nowhere, but thankfully Yan Chi could offer quite a few suggestions. Jiang Ruan picked out a good number of gifts; it was just that time was tight and she couldn’t carefully select each one. And hearing that his sister and brother?in?law would be there too, this trip to the mall really did cost Jiang Ruan quite a bit.
Good thing her little private stash was well?funded.
Normally, back in Beijing, whenever she went out with her cousins, she hardly ever had to spend money, and all her New Year’s money had been saved up.
When Yan Chi wanted to pay, she refused him.
"I’m the one giving them the gifts in my name—why should you pay?"
After hurriedly picking out some presents, they got in the car. While stowing everything, Jiang Ruan carefully checked through the gifts again, afraid she might have missed someone.
"Buying Buddhist scriptures for your brother?in?law—are you sure that’s appropriate?" Jiang Ruan looked at the neatly wrapped books, her head faintly aching.
She’d only heard that the Fu Family’s Third Master believed in Buddhism, but sending him sutras—was that really okay?
"Very appropriate. My brother?in?law likes this kind of thing."
"But..." Jiang Ruan pressed her lips. "You bought practice workbooks for your own niece? It’s a holiday and she’s on break, and I’m giving her this?"
Yan Chi’s niece was his sister’s daughter. His sister had a son and a daughter; the younger girl was still in high school.
"She’s still a student. This is more practical."
"..."
He actually gave his blood?related niece this kind of thing. Thinking of the mock exam papers he’d given his two younger brothers, Jiang Ruan finally felt at ease. Turns out all his gifts to students still in school were completely equal across the board.
Jiang Ruan followed him into the car, heading for the Yan Family home. As they drew closer, she no longer had the mind to play with her phone, and inevitably grew nervous.
She wasn’t only worried about meeting the Yan Family and his sister’s family, but also afraid the news would reach her own family. With her father’s short temper, he might very well make a night raid and come straight to Nanjiang to drag her back.
All the way there, Yan Chi kept introducing the family members to her:
"My parents are both remarried, so my sister and I share a mother but have different fathers. My surname is Yan, my sister took her biological father’s surname—Jiang—her name is—
Song Fengwan. When you meet her, just call her ’Sis’."
"Her husband is my brother?in?law, that’s Fu Chen. They have two kids, one named Fu Qinyuan, and the other named Fu Huan."
"Coming along today should also be Qinyuan’s girlfriend, named Jing Xingyao. When we see her later, I’ll introduce you."
The Fu Family in Beijing and the Jing Family from North Sichuan were both very famous. Jiang Ruan was born and raised in Beijing—how could she not know the Fu Family? She’d heard plenty of rumors about them. Even without Yan Chi’s introduction, she already knew a bit.
They just moved in different circles, so she’d never met them in person.
"Don’t be nervous, I’ve got you." Seeing that she seemed tense the entire time, Yan Chi tried to soothe her.
Jiang Ruan nodded. She cared about Yan Chi deep down, so of course she worried whether his family would like her or not. Saying she wasn’t nervous would’ve been a lie.
...
The Yan Family home was right by the sea. Their car drove past the beach, and before long the Yan Family’s small house came into view.
Yan Chi’s phone vibrated. He slowed the car and hit speaker. "Hello—"
"Uncle, when are you getting home?"
The man’s voice was clear and cool; even through the phone speaker, it still sounded pleasant.
"I’ve just arrived."
The car made a turn and drew close to the Yan home.
From a distance, Jiang Ruan could already see someone standing at the door.
He had been tilted slightly to the side taking a call, and when he saw their car pulling up, he lifted his gaze. Under the unrestrained sunlight, his features were thrown into sharp relief. His profile was deep?set, with a straight nose and thin lips. His natural aura was ascetic and reserved, but with one button undone at his collar, he carried a hint of unruly defiance.
Clean?cut, elegant, aristocratic; his eyes held no dust.
This was the Fu Family’s Third Young Master, the man who had recently caused a huge stir in Beijing with his romance—
