Chapter 1264: Chapter 1001: Obstruction
The Empress Dowager, seeing Director Zhang’s well-structured reasoning, knew he was withholding something.
"How could I, a humble servant, recognize those people of the martial world? Your Highness should still send someone to Jiangnan to find them! It is said that the aristocratic family lives in the Jiangnan area."
"The late Emperor and His Majesty have treated you well, and now His Majesty is in peril, yet you dare to conceal the truth? Has a dog’s eaten your conscience?"
The Empress Dowager pointed at Director Zhang, her fierce gaze seemed to want to stab him with knives.
Director Zhang sighed, realizing that he couldn’t evade today. He was already tormented by guilt and did not wish to conceal anything any longer.
He remained silent for a moment before saying, "I do know one person, perhaps he has a solution!"
Director Zhang closed his eyes briefly, apologizing to himself for breaking his promise. Though he vowed back then not to involve that person again, he was left with no choice now.
"Who?" Hope surged in the Empress Dowager’s heart at once.
"He’s now in the Capital; his disciple has opened a medical clinic there..."
...
"Sir, ahead is Yuhe Pass!" Ming Mo shook off a thin layer of snow from his shoulders, slightly relieved.
"Hmm!" They had left Wujun Prefecture and, after five days, finally arrived in front of Yuhe Pass.
"Stop, who are you? The area ahead is Yuhe Pass, no entry allowed!" A soldier in armor held a long spear, blocking the two who were about to enter the city.
"My lord is an Imperial Censor sent by the court, please report!" Ming Mo took a name card from his bosom, dismounted, and handed it to the soldier.
The soldier exchanged glances with another, didn’t accept it, and said, "An Imperial Censor sent by the court? I’ve not heard of it, have you?"
"No, haven’t heard the General mention it. Now with the border conflicts arising, who knows if these two are Daxing’s spies?"
One soldier examined Gu Chengyu, cloaked in black, who was so heavily wrapped that even his face was unclear, filled with suspicion.
"Open your eyes and see clearly, there’s my lord’s official seal on the name card here, and also court documents, could they be forged?"
Ming Mo felt angry with the soldiers’ rudeness.
They dared suspect his lord to be a Daxing spy? Ridiculous.
"The General ordered that no one is allowed into the city. I only heed the General’s orders; it doesn’t matter who you are, said no entry, then no entry."
The leading soldier’s face turned unpleasant, his voice grew louder. Once inside the city, the frontier lay ahead. The two appearing was truly suspicious.
Other soldiers, seeing a situation unfold, came over quickly, standing behind him.
"You’re utterly disrespectful, my lord is an Imperial Censor sent by the court, blocking him - do you intend to defy the Emperor’s decree? Can you, a mere soldier, make decisions for your General?"
Seeing so many soldiers gathered around, Ming Mo was furious.
Gu Chengyu frowned, why did these soldiers not let him into the city? Refused even to report, what was happening inside? Even under night attack, they wouldn’t refuse to report and just leave a court-appointed Imperial Censor stranded outside the city.
"No one is allowed to enter, it’s our lord’s order. I’m just a small soldier following higher-ups’ commands, please don’t make it difficult for us."
Ming Mo saw them all gathered, glaring at them, turning to look at Gu Chengyu.
"Is Lord Yin, the Imperial Censor from the Capital, inside the city?" Gu Chengyu remained mounted, determined to enter the city.
"Lord Yin? Yes, he’s here, do you know him?" The soldier tightened his grip on the spear, and Gu Chengyu noticed their expressions growing even more stern with some hostility shown.
"Lord Yin is the imperial envoy sent by the court, and I’m here by decree to assist him." Gu Chengyu placed his hand on the saddle, sensing their odd demeanor at the mention of Yin Kun.
"Assist? Ah, you’re that scoundrel official’s accomplice? No wonder you want to enter. Take him down, he’s with that scoundrel official!"
With a shout, a crowd of soldiers emerged. Gu Chengyu immediately drew his sword from beneath the saddle, and Ming Mo stood by him with his sword.
"Audacious! I am an Imperial Censor sent by the court. You dare act against me, are you seeking rebellion?" Gu Chengyu dismounted with a leap, opposing them with his sword.
"Humph! Because of that scoundrel official, our General was attacked, you’re asking for him as soon as you arrived, how are you not with him?" Seeing them draw weapons, the soldier grew nervous.
He felt these two seemed frail but did not expect them armed.
"Why talk, capture them and lock them up!" Another soldier interrupted, charging first with his spear.
The other soldiers, seeing him act, naturally followed.
Gu Chengyu and Ming Mo quickly wielded their swords, not expecting this development. The few guardians of the Ding Generation had been left back at Wujun Prefecture, with so many soldiers, Gu Chengyu had to engage personally.
"Do not kill, just disable them!" Killing those guarding the pass would make explanations impossible.
"Yes!" Ming Mo responded and promptly rushed forward.
The soldiers were not their match, Gu Chengyu and Ming Mo swiftly subdued them with fists and kicks, leaving whimpering figures strewn on the ground within moments.
"Stop!" A junior officer rode in, wielding a long spear while charging towards them.
As he neared, he hurled the spear fiercely, aiming straight at Gu Chengyu.
Gu Chengyu snorted, sidestepping to easily dodge it, catching the spear mid-turn, and in one swift motion, hurled it back like a lightning bolt toward the junior officer.
The junior officer didn’t evade in time, watching in astonishment as the spear impaled the ground before his horse’s hooves.
The steed, still galloping, stumbled over the protruding spear, throwing the officer from its back.
In an instant, man and horse were overturned.
The soldiers, witnessing Gu Chengyu’s prowess, were too frightened to approach.
Gu Chengyu and Ming Mo now stood before a heap of fallen soldiers, the junior officer was dazed, struggling on the ground without rising.
"Go report, I want to see if your General dares defy the Emperor’s command!" Gu Chengyu adjusted his slightly disordered cloak, addressing the soldiers hesitantly standing by.
Ming Mo knew his master was angered, seeing how different the people were at the border compared to elsewhere. It’s no wonder they’d heard tales of the border people’s fierce disposition, but these soldiers lacked decorum. Truly, it’s like dealing with soldiers, even if a Scholar had reason, he might find it hard to explain!
