Chapter 571: Chapter 555: Reduced to Ashes Amidst Talk and Laughter
He cursed in a low voice, but his body had already sunk back into the commander’s chair, instantly regaining his calm and rationality.
On the Star Map displayed in the center of the bridge, three massive red dots were charging out of the chaotic energy turbulence at astonishing speeds. They formed a standard triangular flanking formation, lunging straight for the Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine.
"Switch the observation perspective and magnify the targets."
[Perspective switched.]
The image on the observation window rapidly zoomed in, revealing three terrifying Giant Beasts, each over a thousand meters long. They looked like giant deep-sea squids covered in countless bone spurs. Their fleshy wings paddled through the void, stirring up ripples of Magic Power. On the back of each Giant Beast sat a bizarre bridge made of a mixture of flesh and metal, where shadowy humanoid figures could be seen moving about.
"Are they hybrid creations of the Bloodline and Alchemy Schools? Or void creatures tamed by the Contract School?" Allen wondered.
Several guesses flashed through his mind, but his hands didn’t stop moving.
"Jarvis, evaluate the threat level."
[Biological reaction energy level is Level 2. Overall threat level: Low.]
"Excellent," Allen said, a cold glint flashing in his eyes. "Just when I was nodding off, someone hands me a pillow."
Aside from that main cannon he couldn’t afford to fire, the Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine was a mobile fortress of war in its own right.
"Release the secondary weapon system’s safety locks. Freedom to fire."
[Command confirmed. Safety locks disengaged.]
Along both sides of the Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine’s slender hull, the pitch-black muzzles began to charge up.
[Eighty-four Plasma Bombardment Cannons are loading into the attack sequence... Fire!]
In the next second, eighty-four spheres of light tore through the dim Sea of Magical Power!
In this void devoid of air to act as a medium, the attack arrived completely silently, yet it was incredibly deadly.
The three Giant Beasts clearly hadn’t expected this seemingly reckless greenhorn of a Floating Battleship, which looked like a massive lump of iron, to possess such ferocious firepower. Their massive bodies twisted clumsily in the void in an attempt to evade, but it was already too late.
The first volley accurately blanketed half of the leading Giant Beast’s body. The blazing white torrents of plasma sliced through like a hot knife through butter, easily piercing the Giant Beast’s carapace, which was tough enough to withstand a meteorite impact. A third of the bridge on its back was evaporated in an instant. Countless Black Wizards were reduced to cosmic dust before they could even let out a scream.
The Giant Beast let out a silent roar of agony as its massive body rolled violently. However, the Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine’s assault did not stop. A second volley followed, then a third.
The eighty-four secondary cannons fired in an alternating sequence. The spheres of light chased after the other two fleeing Giant Beasts, exploding into blooms of bloody light upon impact.
Less than ten minutes later, the battle was over.
One Giant Beast was snapped in half at the waist, its remains slowly disintegrating in the magical tides. The other two, heavily wounded, desperately burrowed back into the depths of the chaotic energy turbulence and vanished.
[Enemy units have left the attack range.]
Looking at the drifting remains of the Giant Beast outside the observation window, Allen nodded in satisfaction.
He hadn’t even needed to touch the one thousand, three hundred and twenty universal launch cells loaded with Red Lotus Magic Missiles; the secondary cannons alone were enough to send them fleeing in panic. Inside a Plane, the power of a Plasma Cannon would be weakened by the atmosphere. However, in a pure energy environment like the Sea of Magical Power, its destructive force was amplified by at least twenty percent.
This firepower was more than enough to clear out the vast majority of small fry.
Two days later.
The Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine sailed smoothly along the Gray Channel, the surroundings growing increasingly desolate. Just as Allen thought they would safely reach their destination, that blasted alarm blared across the bridge once again.
[Alert! Five mechanical structural units detected approaching!]
Allen rubbed his temples and looked at the Star Map.
This time, it was a fleet of five different models of Floating Battleships. They were pitch-black all over, sporting pale skull rams at their bows—the classic configuration of a Black Wizard raiding fleet.
"Again?" Allen was getting impatient. "Do they really think my ship is an ATM? They can just come and go as they please?"
He couldn’t even be bothered to resolve this with the secondary cannons anymore. It was too inefficient and caused too much of a commotion.
"Jarvis, send Thanatos out to collect some combat data."
[Command received.]
A hatch at the bottom of the Floating Battleship opened, and a dark shadow silently melted into the Sea of Magical Power. At the same time, a sliver of Allen’s consciousness linked with Thanatos’s Control Core, instantly switching his perspective.
The Golem, standing nearly twenty-six meters tall, now looked like a Death God strolling through the shadows. Shrouded in the Soul Concealing Cloak, it blended perfectly with the void. The detection Arrays of the five Black Wizard Floating Battleships did not react to it in the slightest.
Allen-Thanatos soon came face-to-face with the enemy ships.
In his soul vision, those five menacing Floating Battleships were no longer cold, steel constructs. Instead, they appeared as energy aggregates built from countless fragile threads of Law, carrying hundreds of vivid souls.
"Conventional weapons destroy matter, but I reap existence itself," he murmured.
With a shift in Allen’s thoughts, Thanatos slowly swung its scythe.
[Decay Law—Silent Wither]
An invisible ripple instantly spread out, with Thanatos at the epicenter. This was the very concept of "decay" and "termination."
In the distance, it was as if someone had pressed the fast-forward button on the five Black Wizard Floating Battleships that had been arrogantly closing in. The glow of their outermost Protective Arrays flickered a mere two times before dying out instantly, like old lightbulbs with loose wiring.
Immediately after, large patches of reddish-brown rust began to bloom across the ships’ armor. The metal became mottled and brittle at a visible rate.
On one of the ships, a Second-level Black Wizard seemed to sense something was wrong. He rushed out of the bridge, staring at his own hands in horror.
His skin was aging rapidly, breaking out in liver spots as his vitality drained away like water through an open floodgate. He opened his mouth, seemingly trying to cast a spell, but only managed to let out a few dry, hollow coughs. Then, like a weathered statue, his entire body shattered inch by inch, turning into a handful of ash.
This terrifying "withering" was playing out simultaneously across all five Floating Battleships. Metals rusted, Energy Circuits collapsed, and the crews turned to flying ash.
In less than ten seconds, the five heavily-armed Floating Battleships had silently disintegrated and collapsed in this dead void, reduced to a heap of slowly drifting space junk.
Back on the bridge of the Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine, Allen stared at the scene, falling into a long silence.
"Commander?" Jarvis asked tentatively.
Allen abruptly sat up straight, his face twisted in bitter remorse.
"I was too rash! I took a massive loss!"
He had forgotten that the Decay Law affected both living organisms and physical matter alike! With that single strike, let alone stripping the Floating Battleships’ armor to sell for scrap, it hadn’t left him a single hair! Five entire ships’ worth of supplies and Magic Stones had simply evaporated!
"It seems I can’t just use this move casually. The cost is too high..." Allen gasped, his heart aching.
Fortunately, before the Law had fully unleashed its power, Thanatos had relied on the instincts of the Soul Law to proactively use the Soul-Trapping Lantern, fishing out a few of the "brighter" souls from the ashes.
After a round of interrogation, Allen finally understood why he was so wildly popular out here.
Wizards below the Dawn Star Level had a hard time surviving in the Magic Sea, and even Dawn Star Level experts struggled to endure for long periods. If they lacked spatial jumping abilities and there were no Planes nearby, they could easily die out in the void. Therefore, combat in the Magic Sea was almost entirely ship-to-ship.
His Ten Thousand Miles of Sunshine bore no crest of any family, academy, or organization on its hull. In a lawless place like the Gray Channel, an unmarked Floating Battleship was basically a firefly in the dark night, with "clueless newbie" written all over it.
If they didn’t rob him, who would they rob?
"I see. No wonder even Second-level Wizards dared to provoke me." Allen stroked his chin, a dangerous glint flashing in his eyes.
Since everyone was being so enthusiastically welcoming... Once he got the G-771 Plane up and running, perhaps he could moonlight as an "Order Maintainer" along this route.
Just as he was scheming how to rob the robbers and recoup his losses, Jarvis’s voice rang out again.
[Notice: Arrived at the destination of the planned route.]
[Target G-771 Plane has entered observation range.]
Allen looked up and gazed out the observation window.
At the end of the dim Sea of Magical Power, a Plane emanating a faint, dull glow hovered quietly in the void.
