Chapter 560: Chapter 560: Fishing (Part 2)
"Whoa, for real!" Xie Lei’s excited shout carried over. "The rod’s moving! It’s moving!"
"Quick, quick, quick! Pull the fish up!"
"Looks like it’s a big one."
The boys over there were getting boisterous, all excited about the fish that was about to be caught.
Li Huan watched with immense envy. "Wow, they got a bite so quickly over there! We haven’t had any action at all."
Su Qing smiled and said, "Don’t worry. We just got here. Be patient, a fish will bite eventually."
"Ah, I’m so excited!" Li Huan’s face was full of anticipation. "I wonder what kind of fish we’ll catch."
However, after a few moments of commotion from the boys’ side, they heard Xie Lei say regretfully, "Ah, the fish got away!"
Hearing this, Su Qing couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow slightly. ’The fish actually slipped the hook.’
But that was normal. Most of them had never fished before and had no experience, so it wasn’t surprising for a fish to get off the hook.
After a short while, the boys quieted down again and everyone went back to fishing in silence.
Perhaps because Su Qing had just spurred the growth of her vines, she suddenly noticed several fish swimming toward her. One of them came right up and bit her hook in one go.
It was a grass carp, and not a small one either—it looked to be about five or six pounds. It bit down hard on the hook, pulling the rod down with it.
Li Huan spotted it immediately and exclaimed, "Whoa, Qingqing! Quick, quick, quick! You’ve got a bite! Quick!"
Li Huan was even more excited and anxious than Su Qing. If she weren’t holding her own rod, she would have rushed over to help Su Qing pull.
Her cry drew the attention of Liu Juan and the others. Seeing that a fish was on the line, they all grew excited too.
Su Qing couldn’t help but smile, pursing her lips. Seeing that the grass carp had swallowed the hook securely, she gave the rod a skillful tug. A moment later, everyone saw a silvery glint flash under the sun as the fish leaped from the water and landed with a THWAP on the grassy bank of the reservoir.
"What a huge fish!" Seeing Su Qing land a fish, it wasn’t just Li Huan’s group—even the boys stopped fishing. They reeled in their lines, tossed their rods on the grass, and ran over to see the fish Su Qing had caught. It was the very first fish anyone in their group had managed to catch.
It was a momentous occasion!
"This fish is seriously huge." A five- or six-pound grass carp is a decent size, and since it had just been caught, it was full of energy, flopping around ceaselessly on the grass. Li Huan and the other girls didn’t dare try to pin it down; they could only circle it and marvel, "How are we supposed to get it into the bucket? It feels impossible to hold down."
"I’ll do it." Xie Lei felt that as one of the guys, he should be the one to step up. He went over, pinned the grass carp down with one move, gripped it tightly with both hands, and quickly tossed it into Su Qing’s bucket.
There was already some water in the bucket. Once the grass carp was inside and touched the water, it gradually calmed down.
"What kind of fish is this?" Xie Lei asked curiously. He loved eating fish, but unfortunately, he couldn’t tell the different types apart.
Su Qing replied, "It’s a grass carp. They’re very tasty."
"A grass carp, huh?" Xie Lei grinned. "Grass carp are great."
After crowding around Su Qing’s bucket for a while, the group went back to their spots and started fishing again. With Su Qing’s successful catch as a precedent, everyone was fired up, hoping they too would catch a fish soon.
Su Qing just smiled faintly and continued holding her rod in a leisurely manner. She didn’t intentionally release her green mist to attract the fish in the reservoir. She simply controlled her submerged vines to swirl around each of her friends’ hooks. This would attract some fish without causing a huge commotion, but whether they could actually catch anything would be up to their luck.
Even without deliberately releasing her green mist, the faint trace of her superpower leaking from the vines was enough to attract the fish. Before long, her friends’ fishing rods started moving one after another. Xie Lei took the lead, catching a silver carp of about four or five pounds. After that, everyone had some degree of success, catching grass carp, silver carp, loaches, and more—over a dozen fish in total.
Su Qing also caught another grass carp weighing four or five pounds.
In the end, over the course of the afternoon, Su Qing’s group caught over twenty fish. Su Qing alone caught seven or eight of them. The final tally for the combined groups of Su Qing’s friends and Xie Lei’s friends came to about eighty pounds of fish in total. There was no way they could eat that many fish by themselves, so they decided to bring them out for everyone to share at the bonfire party that evening.
In the end, Xie Lei paid for all the fish and didn’t let Su Qing’s group chip in. He just said it was his treat for the class, a gesture of goodwill.
Su Qing knew Xie Lei’s family wasn’t short on money, so she didn’t refuse. ’There are still two days left, anyway. I can just get some other food for everyone later.’
"Tomorrow, I’ll go into the mountains and hunt a few rabbits," Su Qing said with a smile.
When Xie Lei heard this, his eyes lit up. "Su Qing, can I tag along with you guys tomorrow?"
Xie Lei remembered from last year’s autumn trip that Su Qing was an amazing hunter. He was useless at hunting, but he could certainly ride her coattails.
"Sure." Su Qing glanced at her friends, and seeing no objections from them, she smiled. "Sure."
The group returned to the inn. When Huo Tao saw how many fish Su Qing’s group had brought back and heard they could be cooked for everyone that night, he tried to give Xie Lei money for the fish.
Xie Lei waved him off. "No need. It’s my treat for everyone. Class President, you don’t have to give me any money."
Seeing that Xie Lei was insistent on not taking the money, Huo Tao smiled. "Alright, I know you’re not short on cash, so I won’t be polite. On behalf of everyone, thank you."
Xie Lei waved his hand. "Pfft, it’s no big deal."
Everyone had thought the evening’s bonfire party would be a happy and lively affair. But unexpectedly, someone decided to start making trouble.
Zhao Xiaohui and Song Yufang had also come along on this trip to Qiyun Village. From the moment they set out until they checked into the inn, the two of them had actually been quiet. Su Qing’s group had simply treated them as if they didn’t exist. Logically, it would have been great if things had stayed peaceful all the way until they returned to school.
But that evening, Zhao Xiaohui started being passive-aggressive.
That afternoon, Zhao Xiaohui and Song Yufang had gone to an orchard to see the flowers. The apple and pear trees were in full bloom, a beautiful mix of pink and white.
Delighted by the sight, the two of them broke off a number of branches without asking for the villagers’ permission. They were caught by the locals, who gave them a fierce scolding. Although they didn’t end up having to pay any compensation, the two returned to the inn fuming.
So when she saw that Huo Tao had prepared so many fish—a good several dozen pounds’ worth—Zhao Xiaohui immediately blew up.
