Chapter 406: Chapter 416: Thank-you Gift
He spoke quickly, but his words were clear. His voice wasn’t loud, but it was enough for Stella Sterling to hear every word he said.
A flicker of surprise crossed Stella Sterling’s eyes. She hadn’t expected him to go out of his way to catch up with her just to give her this warning.
She narrowed her eyes, sizing him up.
’Why is he doing this? Is he genuinely warning me out of goodwill, or does he have another motive?’
’We’re complete strangers, and we even had a small misunderstanding earlier. He has no reason to warn me at all!’
Seeing her expression, the man grew anxious. "Miss, please, just believe me this once. I really mean you no harm."
"As for why I’m doing this, just think of it as my way of thanking you for offering me Derek Walsh’s things earlier. I was foolish and didn’t accept them at the time, though."
"Anyway, I’ve said my piece. You should think it over. I have to go. If anyone finds out I’ve been in contact with you, David Walsh’s people will definitely come after me."
At this, he felt a pang of regret. ’It looks like this woman doesn’t believe a word I’m saying.’
’Then again, if I were in her shoes, I wouldn’t believe a stranger either!’
’If I’d known this would be the outcome, I never should have taken the risk to find her!’
A wave of disappointment washed over him.
’It’s true I warned her out of kindness, but I’m not without my own selfish reasons.’
’Judging from her actions, even though this woman is a tough character, she doesn’t seem like a bad person at heart.’
’As long as you don’t provoke her, she won’t just attack for no reason.’
’She even wanted to give me Attorney Walsh’s things as compensation over such a small matter.’
’That’s why I decided to take a chance and tell her. I thought maybe she’d be grateful and reward me a little...’
’Then the risk would have been worth it.’
But he hadn’t expected her to completely disbelieve him, or even be suspicious.
And so, his little scheme had completely backfired.
Not only had he gained nothing, but if anyone found out what he’d done today, he would also have offended the people backing Attorney Walsh.
But he couldn’t stay here any longer.
He was afraid she’d truly believe he had ulterior motives. If he stayed any longer, getting away at all might become a serious problem.
He shook his head and quickened his pace.
"Wait."
Just then, a crisp female voice from behind him stopped him in his tracks.
His face froze. ’Don’t tell me she still doesn’t believe me... Is she going to kill me?’
He turned his head slowly, ready to bolt at a moment’s notice. Swallowing hard, he asked, "Miss, is there something else?"
"It’s fine if you don’t believe me. But even so, I haven’t done you any harm. You can’t attack me."
Stella Sterling just stared at him for a moment without a word, then tossed something toward him.
The object flew toward the man, but he didn’t dare try to catch it.
After tossing the item to him, Stella Sterling turned and left.
Leaving the man alone on the path.
As he watched Stella Sterling walk away, a peculiar glint appeared in his eyes. He then glanced down at the object on the ground.
He felt a mix of hope and fear, not daring to make a rash move.
After a long moment, he finally shuffled over to the object, which was wrapped in a black bag, and carefully opened one corner.
His eyes instantly lit up!
’Is this... a small bag of steamed buns? There must be eight or nine of them!’
He quickly snatched the bag, tucking it inside his clothes, his eyes shining with excitement and exhilaration.
It seemed his gamble had paid off. He had traded a piece of information for the woman’s reward.
’This small bag of steamed buns... what a huge score! This is enough to last my family of three for several days.’
He swallowed hard. ’How long has it been since I’ve eaten a steamed bun?’
’I never thought I’d get the chance to taste one again in this lifetime.’
At this thought, he looked in the direction Stella Sterling had gone, suddenly dropped to his knees, and kowtowed. "Thank you!"
After doing this, he quickly got to his feet and ran off into the night.
Stella Sterling headed toward the outskirts of Veridia.
She didn’t leave the Veridia area, but simply returned to Felix Lawrence’s territory.
She believed about seventy or eighty percent of what the man had said. Ultimately, the information was irrelevant to her, as she had no intention of leaving anyway.
After a moment’s thought, she figured out his motives.
Even though the information was useless to her, she had still given him a small reward.
Consider it a return for his small show of goodwill.
’Leaving is out of the question. As for retaliation from the people behind that Attorney Walsh, I couldn’t care less.’
’If they want to cause trouble, they can bring it on. We’ll see who ends up being the one in trouble.’
’As for Attorney Walsh, I don’t regret killing him.’
’I’d show no mercy to scum like him.’
’He tried to set me up, and when that failed, he tried to kill me. He got exactly what he deserved.’
As for the powerful backer he had, Stella Sterling hadn’t asked the man about Attorney Walsh’s background, but she could make an educated guess.
’This is Sanctyr Base’s territory. In fact, they’re the only real power here.’
’For that man to act with such impunity, with no one to rein him in... it’s obvious who was backing him.’
’Sanctyr Base.’
When Stella Sterling got back, many people were still busy at work. They all greeted her warmly when they saw her.
Among them were quite a few of the people who had tried to rob her with Faye Lawrence that night.
They had been at odds before, but after spending these last few days together, that incident was long in the past.
Everyone here knew that when Stella Sterling and her sister arrived, they had given them a great deal of food.
Because of this, they all held Stella Sterling in high regard. What’s more, after getting to know one another over this period, any of the dissatisfaction they might have felt at the beginning was long gone.
Stella Sterling smiled and returned their greetings.
She then returned to her room and quickly washed up. She still needed to deal with the blood that had splattered on her.
After finishing, she eagerly entered her space.
