Chapter 423: Chapter 433: Too Arrogant
But the man beside her didn’t seem to hear a thing. He didn’t even flinch, let alone turn his head to glance at her.
His gaze remained fixed on the person in the distance.
The tall woman glanced back at the masked figure.
’The woman is wearing a mask. You can’t even see her face. What is River Larkin even looking at?’
Growing more and more annoyed, she finally shoved the man beside her. "Is she really that interesting? You can’t even take your eyes off her!"
"What the hell are you doing—"
River Larkin shot her an irritated glare, his eyes flashing with a dark look. But the next moment, when he clearly saw the woman’s face, his expression shifted again.
He said apologetically, "Sorry, Selene. I think I just saw someone I used to know. I lost my composure for a second."
The woman he called Selene Larkin still looked at him in disbelief, as if she couldn’t believe he’d spoken to her like that.
She felt a knot of anger in her chest, but since he had already apologized, she couldn’t really say much.
All she could say was, "You were just so harsh."
River Larkin looked contrite and wrapped an arm around her waist. "I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Forgive me this time, okay, baby?"
Seeing the couple act this way, the two other men with them chuckled and began to tease them.
Since he’d put it like that, the anger in Selene Larkin’s heart finally subsided.
"So who is that woman? Is she a relative of yours?"
Selene Larkin asked curiously. The woman was wearing a mask, so you couldn’t see her face. For River Larkin to find just her back familiar meant he must know her very well. ’Could she be his sister?’
But River Larkin shook his head. "I’m not sure. She just feels... familiar."
As he spoke, his gaze drifted back to the figure, his brow furrowed in thought.
’Her back is so familiar, but I can’t for the life of me remember where I’ve seen her before.’
"Well, that’s simple," Selene said with a grin. "Come on, let’s go over there and take off her mask. Then we’ll know who she is. If she really is a relative, one of your sisters, we can’t just let Tripp Jennings push her around."
"I’m sure if I intervene, they won’t dare disrespect us."
Selene Larkin said cheerfully, already leading the group in that direction as she spoke.
Over on her side, Stella Sterling hadn’t even spoken yet when she noticed the small group of people walking toward them.
She didn’t turn to look, keeping her eyes on Tripp Jennings. "Don’t you want to avenge your wife’s brother anymore?"
Tripp Jennings let out a hearty laugh. "Didn’t you say you weren’t the one who killed him? I believe you."
’In truth, he was already certain that the person who killed Attorney Walsh was standing right in front of him.’
’But right now, he has a use for her. So, if she won’t admit to the murder, he’ll just play dumb. That way, they can both save face.’
’First, I’ll get her to work for me. With skills like hers, she’s sure to accomplish great things for me.’
’Once I’ve climbed a little higher and secured my position, I’ll avenge my wife’s brother.’
As he spoke, he patted Queenie Walsh’s hand beside him, offering her a comforting gesture.
Stella Sterling smiled. She had consistently denied being the killer, but now, she gave him a meaningful look. "My apologies, I lied to you. I did, in fact, kill him. So I suppose that makes me your enemy."
Tripp Jennings’s eyes narrowed. "Didn’t you just say you weren’t the one who killed him?"
He felt a surge of anger. He could see it now—this woman was doing this on purpose.
She had refused to admit it before, yet just when he was about to play dumb and recruit her, she openly confessed.
’She’s obviously trying to provoke me. She has no intention of submitting.’
He looked at her, perplexed. He couldn’t understand her motives. What could she possibly gain from this?
’Even if she guessed that my intentions weren’t pure, this situation isn’t without its benefits for her!’
’This way, she could have temporarily escaped disaster. Isn’t staying alive a good thing?!’
Hearing his question, Stella Sterling scoffed. "Didn’t I make myself clear? I was lying to you before."
"You little bitch, you’re doing this on purpose!"
Queenie Walsh, standing to the side, couldn’t take it anymore. She burst out cursing, then turned to Tripp Jennings. "Honey, she obviously has no intention of submitting to us! You don’t need to give her any more chances."
"Besides, she’s clearly provoking us now. She’s so arrogant! It’s like we don’t even exist in her eyes!"
At this, Tripp Jennings fell silent. He agreed with his wife; the woman before him was clearly just toying with him.
He narrowed his eyes, a probing expression appearing on his fleshy face.
His eyes were already small, and his face was large and pudgy. When he squinted, his eyes disappeared completely, becoming nothing more than thin lines.
"Come on, then. Come get your revenge."
Stella Sterling looked at them, issuing a challenge. ’Life has just been too boring lately. I think I’ll find some fun here at the base before Black Swan and the others arrive.’
’If worse comes to worst, I’ll just stir up some trouble for these people, then leave and find a place to hide until Black Swan gets here.’
’As for Felix Lawrence and his group, I won’t go back there for now. I don’t want to expose them.’
’Felix Lawrence’s group is too weak. They can’t withstand any real trouble. If they went up against Sanctyr Base now, they’d just be wiped out.’
Stella Sterling was very confident in her own abilities. Besides, if things went south, she could always escape. So, she had nothing to fear.
’I can stir up as much chaos as I want. The most important thing is to have fun.’
Still, just in case, she had put on a bulletproof vest under her clothes. It was like the old saying goes: better safe than sorry.
At this, Mr. and Mrs. Jennings were seething. The two of them were so furious their chests heaved.
So arrogant! This woman was just too damn arrogant!
’How dare she act so arrogantly on our turf? How dare she provoke us? Is there no justice in the world?!’
But for the moment, they didn’t make a rash move. They had just witnessed the woman’s skills, which were strange and unpredictable.
Their reinforcements hadn’t arrived yet. Just the two of them would probably be no match for this woman.
’We’d probably just end up humiliated. Rather than let that happen, it’s better to stall for time and wait for our people to arrive.’
Just then, Selene Larkin and her group drew near, close enough to overhear Stella Sterling’s words.
