Chapter 438: Chapter 448: Your Boss Is My Suitor
’With her skills, she must have done well for herself over the years,’ River thought. ’It wouldn’t be surprising if she’d latched onto some powerful faction.’
A pang of jealousy struck River Larkin.
He had worked so hard for so long, yet his position in Sanctyr Base was still mediocre. The only reason anyone gave him a second glance was because he was riding Selene Larkin’s coattails.
But it all depended on Selene Larkin; he had very little real power of his own.
And now, this woman was clearly doing much better than he was.
Now that they’d met again, he was still beneath her. He’d even been ruthlessly mocked by her.
He was filled with resentment. For all these years, he had been eagerly awaiting the day he’d see Stella Sterling again.
He’d looked forward to her seeing how far he’d come and regretting everything. Then he would be the one to humiliate her mercilessly.
When that time came, he would make her pay.
’Of course, all of this assumed Stella Sterling was even still alive,’ he’d once thought.
But he never imagined that after all these years, not only was Stella Sterling still alive, but when they finally met again, he was still one step below her.
Seeing her stand before him, so arrogant and conceited, made his stomach turn.
He then let out a cold laugh, trying to console himself. ’So what if Stella Sterling is capable and powerful?’
’What she’s done today is no different from courting death. Her journey ends here.’
’But I’m different. I have a bright future ahead of me. My path will only get smoother from now on.’
’In the end, Stella Sterling is still no match for me.’
It seemed only by thinking this could he feel any better, and the tension in his face gradually relaxed.
He stared at Stella Sterling, waiting for her to reveal who was backing her.
Knowing Selene Larkin, even if Stella really did have a powerful backer, Selene wouldn’t let her off the hook today.
So, he might just get to see Selene Larkin delivering a fatal blow right when Stella was at her most confident, assuming they wouldn’t dare to kill her.
’The look on her face will be priceless,’ he thought, eagerly anticipating the moment.
Hearing Selene Larkin’s question, Stella Sterling adopted a serious tone. "Are you sure you want to know? You might regret it once you find out."
"How about this? I’ll give you one chance. Choose your words again, try to get on my good side, and if I’m happy, maybe I’ll forgive you for what you’ve done."
"Otherwise, you’ll definitely regret it when you find out who’s backing me. But by then, it’ll be too late."
Stella Sterling’s tone was mischievous, and she remained as confident as ever.
Seeing her act this way, the crowd couldn’t help but feel a sliver of admiration. Say what you will, but her strength was undeniable, and her mental fortitude was truly impressive.
Things had already reached this point, yet she could still remain so composed!
Not only was she unafraid, she was even demanding that Selene Larkin try to please her. Her nerve was truly something else.
"Rest assured, no matter who’s backing you, I won’t regret a thing. You’re the one who still hasn’t said a name. Could it be that this is all just nonsense you’re spouting?"
Selene Larkin let out a cold laugh, refusing to be provoked by Stella Sterling.
’Does she love to daydream this much? Fine, let her dream on!’
’Wants to see *me* look regretful? Hmph. Maybe in her next life!’
"How could that be? I’m an honest person; I never lie. If I say I have a backer, I have a backer."
Stella Sterling looked at her, feigning anger. "I already gave you a chance. Since you refuse to get on my good side, you won’t get another one."
"You all want to know who’s backing me, right? Fine, I’ll tell you. The one backing me is..."
She paused. The crowd stared at her, laser-focused, ready to hear which faction she belonged to, only to see her stop talking.
Every single one of them scowled.
Stella Sterling chuckled, then her expression suddenly became dead serious. "The one backing me is... Sanctyr Base!"
As Stella Sterling uttered those last words, everyone present froze for a second before their eyes slowly widened in disbelief.
Many of them cleaned out their ears, wondering if they had misheard or simply hadn’t heard correctly.
Queenie Walsh blurted out, "What did you say? What was that about your backer?"
"No need to doubt your ears. You heard me right. My backer is Sanctyr Base."
As if worried they might not have heard clearly, Stella Sterling’s voice was much louder this time.
What a considerate little angel she was.
And so, this time, everyone present heard her loud and clear.
They had heard her perfectly. This woman was claiming that the power supporting her was Sanctyr Base.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, many people burst out laughing.
"She’s insane! This woman is completely insane!"
"Hahaha! What kind of nonsense is she spouting? Saying her backer is Sanctyr Base? Then who the hell are we?"
"No wonder she’s so arrogant and unafraid to die. Turns out she’s just a lunatic with a screw loose."
"Hahaha! Does she even know where she is right now? She’s standing on our turf, in Sanctyr Base! She’s provoking us, then claims *we’re* her backers! Is there anything more ridiculous in the world?!"
Selene Larkin’s face darkened, and she stared coldly at Stella Sterling. "You’re messing with us!"
She didn’t actually think the woman was a lunatic. Stella’s words were arrogant, but her eyes were clear; she didn’t have the look of someone who’d lost their wits.
On the contrary, this woman knew exactly what she was doing.
So, in her eyes, everything Stella was doing was purely to make a fool out of them.
The thought of being repeatedly tricked by this woman today sent Selene Larkin’s temper flaring.
In response, Stella Sterling just shook her head. "Why is it that none of you believe me when I tell the truth?"
"Of course, it would be more accurate to say that my backer isn’t Sanctyr Base itself, but your boss, Miles Sanctus. He’s my biggest supporter."
"You’re all his subordinates, right? He’s the one I have in my corner. Do you dare kill me? Aren’t you afraid he’ll come after you?"
Selene Larkin stared at her in silence, thinking that the woman’s claims were growing more and more outrageous.
She was spouting utter nonsense, even less believable than her previous claim.
’Her backer is Boss Saint? How is that possible?’
She was Boss Saint’s sworn sister. How could she have never known that he was acquainted with someone like this?
Besides, if she really was an acquaintance of Boss Saint, why would she do so many things to humiliate their base?
This was all just nonsense meant to stall for time and play them for fools.
