Chapter 776: Chapter 646: The Interloper (2)
"Judging from your getup, you lot should be some kind of cult." Her voice wasn’t loud, but every word carried undisguised contempt. "Daring to barge into our turf... you really don’t know what death is."
The tension in the Security Team leader’s shoulders eased slightly when he saw the two of them appear.
He raised his hand and made a gesture: fall back.
The members of the Security Team quickly pulled back their guns, leapfrogging to cover one another as they retreated, then reestablished firing positions in the rear, muzzles still trained on the Black-robed People’s direction.
With elite operators here, their task shifted from "interception" to "support."
The five Black-robed People in the center did not respond to the woman’s words.
They didn’t even waste any unnecessary movement; the moment they saw the two, they moved.
All five released their Anomalies at once, twisted power immediately invading the surrounding space.
At the same time, the Black-robed People on the perimeter moved as well.
They leaned out from behind their respective cover and raised their guns to fire.
These Cultist were wielding short-barreled submachine guns—high rate of fire, heavy volume of fire, a rain of bullets pouring out.
Their accuracy was inferior to the Association’s Security Team, but they made up for it with numbers and density of fire.
The Spirit Communicator Association’s side returned fire without hesitation.
The two elites rushed to meet those five Black-robed Spiritualist.
The man’s right hand swept out again, silver-white light exploding in midair, slicing the surging black mist into fragments.
The woman released her own Anomaly.
A faint blue light membrane appeared around her body, tiny arcs of electricity dancing over its surface.
The dark tendrils lashed against the light membrane; arcs of electricity immediately ran back along the tentacles, blasting them into severed segments.
Their coordination was very smooth.
The man was responsible for breaking through head-on—the silver-white light like a scalpel, sharply and precisely cutting through every incoming attack.
The woman handled defense and counterattack. The faint blue light membrane enveloped her and the man; any attack that came close would be countered by the arcs.
Though the five Black-robed Spiritualist had the advantage in numbers, their individual power and teamwork were clearly inferior to the Association’s elites.
Their attacks were each doing their own thing, never forming effective synergy, and were taken apart one by one, each of them suppressed in turn.
In the rear, the Security Team and the Black-robed gunmen were exchanging fire.
The fight inside the abandoned factory was still ongoing, but the clash on the eastern road had already entered a subtle equilibrium.
The Association had the Black-robed People pinned, but the Black-robed People’s numerical advantage prevented the Association from ending the battle quickly.
At the same time, from the south and north sides of the abandoned factory, intense fluctuations of battle were also coming through.
Explosions, gunfire, and eerie shrieks of Anomalies all testified to the ferocity of the fighting.
The Black-robed People hadn’t only come from the east. They were attacking from three directions simultaneously.
Not far from the abandoned factory, atop a half-collapsed loading tower, a lone figure stood.
Though he wasn’t far from the battlefield, no one noticed him.
At times, members of the Spirit Communicator Association’s capture teams even passed right by this figure.
Their gaze swept over the direction he was in, but it was as if they saw nothing but air and simply skipped past him.
His existence had been "erased" from the surrounding environment by some power, as though he had fused directly into the world itself.
This person was Jeming. Relying on Void Step, even on a battlefield like this, he could walk around at will without anyone discovering his presence.
Jeming’s hands hung naturally at his sides, his gaze calm as he watched the battlefield in front of him.
A strange power was seeping out from around his body.
That power had been extracted from Anomaly fragments, re-encoded by him into a "Anomaly aura."
This aura severed the "connection" between him and the Night Mysterious... or rather, made the Night Mysterious recognize him as "one of its own."
Because of this camouflage effect, Jeming didn’t need light and could stand in the dark.
The Night Mysterious flowed past him like water around a stone, without triggering any reaction.
This was one of the research results he’d achieved over this period.
Not exactly mature, and the principle was rather crude.
He simply coated his body surface with power fragments extracted from Anomaly shards, faking a signal of "I am an Anomaly."
The Night Mysterious had a very high Level and very strong power, but its Spiritual Wisdom wasn’t much; its "cognition" was simple.
In its eyes, Jeming was no different from those Dangerous Level Anomaly fragments.
Jeming shifted his gaze from the fight on the eastern road, sweeping across the entire battlefield.
To be honest, the Spirit Communicator Association’s combat power was surprisingly strong.
Take the two elites on the eastern road: the man and woman had both sealed Hazard Level Anomalies.
Judging from the way they fought, those two Anomalies had already integrated very deeply with them, almost becoming part of their bodily instinct.
The silver-white light the man released should be a "cutting"-type Anomaly power; whereas the woman’s faint blue light membrane and arcs leaned more towards "defense" and "counterattack."
The two of them together were completely crushing the five Black-robed Spiritualist opposite them.
From the Energy fluctuations and release patterns of those five, their Anomalies were basically at the peak of Dangerous Level, brushing against the Hazard Level threshold.
But their coordination was obviously clumsy, and their Anomalies even interfered with each other.
One Black-robed Person’s black mist collided with another’s tentacles; the black mist corroded the tentacles’ surface, greatly weakening their offensive power.
So even with their Anomalies fully unleashed, the Black-robed People couldn’t beat the two across from them.
"A rabble." Jeming gave his verdict in his heart.
He turned his gaze to the capture teams in the rear.
Their combat strength wasn’t weak either.
Most of them were just ordinary field personnel, but a select few had sealed Dangerous Level Anomalies.
Their shooting accuracy in the firefight, tactical coordination, and use of Anomaly abilities all far surpassed those Black-robed gunmen.
More importantly, there was a gap in equipment between the two sides.
The Association’s combat gear was extremely complete. Their firearms were standard-issue, high-precision, low-failure-rate; their body armor could stop most handgun rounds and rifle shrapnel.
And the design of their uniform was even more ingenious—each Association uniform emitted a faint glow in the dark.
It was a clever design.
It ensured that even if an Association member accidentally fell into the darkness—say their light source was shattered, or they were dragged out of a lighting cluster’s coverage—they could still keep themselves in a lit state.
The light wasn’t strong, but as long as there was even a bit of light, the Night Mysterious would not attack.
Unlike those Black-robed People.
Several of the Black-robed People had their kerosene lamps shot to pieces during the exchange of fire.
The instant the lamps shattered, the darkness around them immediately thickened.
Terror surfaced on their faces as they reflexively reached for the watches on their wrists.
Those were small backup light sources—fluorescent lamps set into the watch face, capable of providing a weak glow in the dark.
The dim yellow light just barely pushed back the darkness within about a meter.
Their expressions relaxed slightly, but their movements became clearly more cautious, no longer daring to lean out as boldly to shoot as before.
Jeming’s gaze swept over the shattered kerosene lamps scattered along the battlefield’s edge.
The Black-robed People’s lighting methods were too primitive, too reliant on a single light source.
Once the kerosene lamp was destroyed, they could only rely on that little wrist-watch.
The watch’s glow was so weak it could only illuminate less than a meter around them, and its brightness was steadily fading with time.
A few Black-robed People had even had their watches shot apart by stray bullets during the fight.
Jeming saw their silhouettes freeze for an instant in the darkness and then... vanish.
The Night Mysterious took them, cleanly, without leaving a trace.
All in all, the Spirit Communicator Association lived up to its status as an official organization.
Even to capture a single Hazard Level Anomaly, they had deployed ample combat power to ensure no one could interfere.
Elites were holding the line on the east, and the intensity of the fighting to the south and north indicated that the other two elite teams had also engaged the Black-robed People over there.
A three-pronged encirclement, leaving no dead angles.
And without a doubt, with such a big commotion, the Spirit Communicator Association’s reinforcements would arrive very soon.
However... the other side seemed to know the Association’s deployment very well.
In that case, there was no way they’d come with only this much preparation.
Jeming’s gaze left the battlefield and shifted toward the sea.
That was the west side of the abandoned industrial zone—no land route, only a not-so-steep embankment and a gray, hazy sea.
Thick fog rolled across the water, veiling everything in the distance from sight.
Jeming’s gaze grew a little more profound.
