Chapter 803: Chapter 789: All-In
After the mist entered its ebbing phase, Levi’s great army finally appeared within Lin Jun’s full-map field of view.
By this time, they were already not far from the Capital of the United Kingdom, Oath City.
To the west of Oath City, atop a lone watchtower perched on a mountaintop, several sentries spotted the Empire’s army.
After a brief moment of shock, they lit the beacon; thick smoke rose straight into the sky like a black pillar.
They had completed their mission, but this act also exposed their position.
In no time, a few black dots appeared on the far side of the sky—those were members of the Blood Race who had transformed into bats.
The sentries inside the watchtower knew there was no escape; they directed the Puki to hide on the inner side of the tower and prepared to fight to the death.
However, when the two Blood Race approached they did not descend; instead, they directly controlled the blood they had brought, condensing it midair into slender Arrows, and shot them through the narrow stairway opening at the top of the tower.
After several short, strangled screams, someone burst out of the stairwell, armor smeared with blood, two Puki clinging to his shoulders, their Tentacle Blades whirling to shield him.
Once outside, he raised his Crossbow and took aim at the Blood Race in the sky.
However, before the Crossbow Arrow could leave the string, a Blood Blade broke through the Puki’s defense from behind and Pierced his chest.
He lowered his head to look at the red blade tip sticking through his tunic, his fingers slackening as he collapsed into a pool of blood, while the two Puki on him, obeying his final order, held out for a few more seconds before being skewered to death by countless Blood Arrows.
The Blood Race descended and checked every corpse, stabbing each one once more in the chest before flying back toward the army.
After they left, Mycelium climbed up the watchtower, wrapping and devouring the corpses of the Puki and the humans.
However, apart from recovering a bit of Magic Power, Lin Jun didn’t manage to decompose anything else.
Which was only natural, since... all their souls had been extracted the moment they died.
Through [Inspiration], Lin Jun watched these souls fly toward the Empire Army and get sucked into that stone stele.
This method of absorbing souls was quite similar to the Yellow-covered Book; it was obvious that stele was the Demon King’s handiwork.
And the fact that the Empire Army could move through the mist also seemed to be thanks to this stele.
He just didn’t know whether these were two separate functions, or if there was some connection between them.
And going to... collect souls?
What was that Slime trying to do this time? Many of these souls should have become his own Mushroom Transformers!
Now, Oath City was about to be encircled from front and back by Levi and Sigmund.
Facing the ferocious onslaught of the Empire, the United Kingdom had no choice but to concentrate the vast majority of its Power on defending Oath City, and the price was that every other city inside the new defensive line became a cake laid bare under the Empire’s blade, with little resistance to speak of.
...
In Oath City, Alama stood atop the city wall, gazing at the distant camp of his old rival Sigmund, when heavy footsteps sounded behind him.
"Go on, what bad news is it this time?" Alama asked directly.
Lorenzo stepped up beside him, resting his Magic Staff on the battlement, following Alama’s line of sight with his own: "The other army is almost at the walls. Because the garrisons were transferred here, North Gate Castle and Valley Bridge Castle got taken on their way through. Those who didn’t manage to escape..."
Lorenzo paused for a moment: "Have probably been slaughtered to the last."
Alama slammed a fist into the parapet, stone chips flying: "Animals!"
"This time, the Empire seems to be aiming for the complete extermination of humankind," Lorenzo’s voice remained fairly calm, but deep worry lurked in his eyes.
"Extermination?" Alama gave a short, cold laugh. "Looks to me like they’ve gone mad and come to drag us down with them!"
"Levi, Sigmund, Darean, and a newly risen Lord Level Demon Race! Everyone who can fight has come. Only that intelligence officer Mofulei, Duke Virelis, and the Demon King himself haven’t shown up." Alama ticked the names off on his fingers one by one. "The Empire’s sitting on such a vast territory and they’re just not guarding it? As long as we hold them here, hold them until Fungus Castle sacks their homeland... I really want to see whether they still have the strength to keep fighting then!"
Lorenzo let out a sigh as well: "Yeah, they really are acting like lunatics. What are they even after, doing all this?"
As the two spoke, a tall figure walked over.
"Excuse me, coming through."
Sofia sprang lightly up, landing on the section of wall Alama had just smashed.
She first took a long look into the distance, then drew her bow and gathered hundreds of Magic Power Arrows, firing them toward the sun.
The Magic Power Arrows flew into the clouds and vanished at the horizon.
After quite a while, they fell like a shower of stars into the Empire’s camp, which was now nearly at the edge of visible range.
Even from such a distance, Alama could see numerous Magic Shields hastily springing up all over the enemy camp; unfortunately, he couldn’t make out how many casualties this volley had caused.
Once she finished, Sofia turned and came down from the wall; she’d been doing this the past few days—harassing the Empire’s camp at random times.
The first round of pinpoint strikes had even directly sniped to death two careless Palace Level officers of the Empire.
At the beginning, the Empire Army’s camp had actually not been that far from Oath City, set at the normal distance for a conventional engagement.
Sofia, by sheer force of pinpoint kills and Arrow rain harassment, had driven them back step by step until they were at the very edge of sight, almost out of view.
Judging by now, they still hadn’t retreated far enough.
Sure enough, by the next morning, Alama could no longer see the Empire Army’s camp with the naked eye; if he didn’t know Sigmund was waiting for the two armies to join up, he might have thought the crisis was over.
Then, to Alama and Lorenzo’s shock, Sofia once again stepped onto the high tower.
This time, she reached up, plucked out one of her own eyeballs, tossed it high into the air, then, just like in the past few days, drew her bow, gathered Magic Power Arrows, and loosed.
Only this time, Alama and the others couldn’t even see the target.
"The Hero... is a bit too ridiculous..." Lorenzo couldn’t help muttering under his breath.
This kind of beyond-visual-range strike capability would have brought an absolutely crushing advantage in previous wars.
Just imagine: what army could long endure a situation where they couldn’t even see the enemy, yet were themselves at constant risk of being shot the moment they showed their heads?
Perhaps only the Mushroom Transformers of Fungus Castle could?
Alama nodded in agreement, but then his worry returned: "If the Hero is this strong, then what about the Demon King?"
"Let’s hope the Demon King didn’t come this time... otherwise it really might..."
Before Lorenzo could finish, a Fungal Mat outside Oath City suddenly lit up right under their noses, Magic Power surging.
Immediately after, under their wary gazes, a Puki bearing its tentacles appeared there.
"This is... Teleportation?!"
Under their incredulous stares, wind rose at the Puki’s feet, and it slowly floated up to their level.
At the same time, Number Ten’s Telepathy sounded in their minds: "You two, by order of the Mushroom Lord, I’ve come to support you!"
As it spoke, the temporary Teleportation Array below lit up again, and No. 7, No. 2, Thirteen... several members of the Mushroom Race were sent over in one go.
Unlike Number Ten’s graceful entrance, however, they arrived in pieces...
