Chapter 385: Chapter 133: The Viscount’s Shock
"Sir, isn’t this... isn’t this a bit too rash?" Viscount Elton asked, looking at Robson with some hesitation.
Although Elton was more anxious than anyone, he had a military background and at least some basic strategic sense.
Viscount Elton would rather spend a little more time ensuring their success in the war was absolute, even if it meant a slight delay.
"Viscount, the situation is urgent. Just rest assured and hurry up with your preparations." Robson gave a relaxed smile at Viscount Elton’s confusion, not intending to explain much.
Seeing Robson’s attitude, Viscount Elton understood.
’What am I doing? When the situation beyond the pass was in complete collapse, it was this very man who came to the rescue. Now the enemy is just a band of routed soldiers. What trouble could they possibly cause?’
"Since you have a plan, Sir, I’m relieved... The situation was urgent when I came out, so I wasn’t able to make any preparations."
"We’ll be on the battlefield soon. Baker, take the Viscount and get him a suit of armor."
Seeing this, Robson didn’t say much more and ordered a nearby Soldier to lead Viscount Elton to get some equipment.
Seeing Robson’s hospitality, Viscount Elton no longer stood on ceremony.
A suit of armor was essential on the battlefield, and Elton had no desire to gamble with his life.
Following the Soldier Robson had ordered to guide him, Viscount Elton heard a strange sound echoing from all corners of the camp—it sounded like a horn.
As the horn sounded, the entire camp seemed to spring to life. With his Silver-rank perception, Viscount Elton could clearly feel the stir of movement all around him.
In just a moment, several soldiers clad in leather armor rushed up before Viscount Elton.
’So fast?!’
Viscount Elton stared in shock at the soldiers before him. ’It hasn’t even been half a minute since that horn call, has it?’
Viscount Elton was beginning to understand how Robson had managed to crush that Beastman Corps.
The mobilization speed of an army revealed a great deal about it.
"Sir, the assembly call has sounded. We need to hurry," said Baker, who was leading the way, picking up his pace.
Viscount Elton nodded, his worries almost entirely dispelled.
...
In the middle of the night, Orc was once again jolted awake by a nightmare.
Ever since the night of the human ambush, Orc had been haunted by dreams of their Cavalry and that storm of arrows. It was the closest he had ever come to death.
Death itself wasn’t terrifying; the process of feeling it approach was.
"It was just a dream..." Orc muttered, wiping the cold sweat from his brow as he stepped out of his tent.
The rain outside had stopped. Moonlight illuminated the land, and in the distance, a few bonfires marked where the goblins were camped for the night.
Although Mendes had sacrificed the goblins before, it didn’t mean he had completely abandoned them.
For the Beastmen, fighting alone wasn’t enough to break through the tight human encirclement.
"Urgent report! Sir! This is bad!"
Just as Orc was lost in thought, the sound of galloping hooves suddenly rang out from the distance.
Orc turned to see a Dwarf Knight.
A Dwarf on horseback was a surreal sight, but there was no helping it. They couldn’t find Warg Mounts or bears in the Human World, so even the Beastmen had to make do with horses.
"Sir! It’s bad! The humans..."
Before Orc could even process what was happening,
the roar of a dragon suddenly thundered from the distant sky, causing his face to drain of color.
’My nightmare is coming true?’
Even if he were deaf, Orc would have recognized that dragon’s roar from the vibrations against his skin.
After all, its master was the very human who had defeated them before.
"Quick! Retreat! Tell the men to retreat immediately!"
The terrain beyond the pass was mostly flat plains, and Orc could already feel the ground trembling.
The Beastmen had no Cavalry at the moment; without a doubt, this was the human army.
Right now, Orc only had a dozen or so Dwarves with him. The bulk of the Beastman Army was busy besieging the human city.
Even if Mendes himself were here with the main force, they wouldn’t be guaranteed a victory. They might not even survive a few clashes with this group of humans.
Let alone him, leading a band of goblins.
...
"Quick! Make way! I’m Orc! I have urgent business with Mendes!"
"Out of the way! Hurry up and get out of the way!"
You never know your own potential until you’re pushed to the limit.
Despite having fought all day yesterday and traveling into the evening, Orc had somehow managed to race back to the walls of Vidom City and reach the Beastman Camp in just two hours.
The assault on Vidom City hadn’t even started yet, and many of the Beastmen sleeping in the open were startled awake by the commotion.
Mendes was a light sleeper to begin with, and hearing the disturbance outside, he immediately scrambled up from the ground.
"What’s going on?"
Mendes looked at his personal guards, only to see them looking just as dumbfounded and clueless.
"Sir! Sir! Orc has returned!"
"Mendes! We have a situation! A situation!"
There wasn’t even a need for the messenger to deliver the news; Orc arrived right alongside him.
"What is it? What’s going on?" Mendes asked, looking at Orc. He thought about the task he’d previously assigned him and had a few guesses as to why he was back, but he couldn’t be certain.
"The humans! The humans are chasing us!" Orc panted, looking at Mendes. He’d ridden so hard on the way here that even his horse couldn’t take the strain.
Only a wild boar or a bear was truly suited to carry the weight of a Dwarf.
"Humans? What humans? The same ones from before?" Mendes asked Orc, feeling a surge of irritation.
’These guys are like leeches, impossible to shake off.’
"That’s right..."
As Orc was speaking with Mendes, the sound of more galloping hooves arrived. A Beastman on horseback galloped in from the distance.
The Beastman dismounted and immediately rushed toward Mendes’s location.
"Sir! We have a situation! Humans spotted ahead!"
"Humans? How many?!" Mendes frowned at the reporting Soldier.
"About four hundred men, with over a hundred of them being Cavalry," the Beastman replied.
’Four hundred men...’
"Four hundred men?!" Orc’s eyes went wide when he heard the number. He looked at Mendes in disbelief.
Mendes was also puzzled.
’Have their string of victories made them this arrogant? We have eight hundred Beastmen and Dwarves.’
’Four hundred... Are they treating us like a bunch of goblins?’
"Four hundred men. Do these humans look down on us that much?" Mendes asked, looking at Orc.
"So... are we going to fight them or not?" Orc asked.
The moment the words left his mouth, Orc realized he had asked an incredibly stupid question.
’We didn’t fight when there were three thousand, we didn’t fight when there were two thousand, and we didn’t fight when there were one thousand. Now the enemy shows up with only four hundred, and you’re still not going to fight?’
The Purple-blooded Beastmen and the Gray Dwarves were both proud, great clans of the steppes! They had their pride!
This was no different from being treated like goblins! Who could possibly endure such a humiliation?
Of course, right after Prince Odoruo’s defeat, Orc wouldn’t have dared to attack even four hundred humans. But with time, and after a recent string of victories, the Beastman Army had slowly regained its confidence.
Besides, just because they managed to escape once didn’t mean they could do it a second or third time.
They had only escaped from these humans last time because they had perfectly sacrificed their allies. Now, there was no second wave of goblins for them to throw away.
