Chapter 451: Chapter 199: The Centaur Breakout Battle
Inside the Centaur Royal Palace, Prince Feiseli sat on the high seat with a Thunder Eagle Knight standing before him.
"Gnolls? Are you sure you saw correctly?" Prince Feiseli asked doubtfully.
The Thunder Eagle Knight nodded.
"Your Highness, it’s the absolute truth. The ones guarding the human camp are indeed a group of Gnolls. There are other races, too—Kobolds..."
"Huh?"
Prince Feiseli listened in disbelief.
Once the reality of it sank in, he couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
"Haha! I never would have thought! Never!"
"Those humans must truly be at the end of their rope! To think they could use that rabble to hold us back! Haha!"
Seeing Prince Feiseli laughing so heartily, the other Centaur nobles in the hall couldn’t help but chuckle as well.
"Your Highness! It seems the Emperor’s reinforcements have arrived..."
"Those are the elites of the Tiger Race, and the guards of Madar Mountain! The best of the best."
"The way I see it, the humans are probably using those vassal races as a rear guard so they can escape with their own lives."
"Your Highness, I volunteer to lead the vanguard and crush the enemy for you!"
Hearing that the humans had left and the camp was guarded by mere rabble, the Centaur generals, who had been so timid before, now all stepped forward to request battle assignments.
They could afford to be timid in the face of humans; everyone had witnessed firsthand how terrifying they were.
But facing Gnolls? That was a completely different story.
It wasn’t that they were underestimating their enemy; the Centaur Clan simply had a wealth of experience in oppressing the Gnolls.
It wasn’t as if the Gnolls hadn’t rebelled before. But experience had shown that these vassal races were completely disorganized, possessing no real combat strength. A single charge from the Centaur Warriors was all it took for them to crumble and scatter.
Moreover, the entire Centaur King City had been under intense siege by Robson. Their only means of communicating with the outside world were the Thunderhawks and the Magic Towers, so they had no idea that the world outside had undergone an earth-shattering transformation.
Prince Feiseli sneered at their words. ’Why didn’t you all speak up when we were facing the humans? Now that you see a weak enemy, you rush out to claim the glory?’
"Say no more!"
"I will lead this expedition myself. I want those humans to see for themselves the might of the Centaur Clan!"
Prince Feiseli’s decision was final. The other Centaur generals could only lament the missed opportunity in private.
’Such easy military honors...’
....
True to his nature as a man of action, Prince Feiseli shut down the City Defense Array as soon as the meeting concluded.
Magic Crystals were scarce in the Beastman Empire. The Magic Crystal Stones within the Centaur King City were a stockpile accumulated by their ancestors over hundreds of years, and the recent siege had nearly depleted it.
Prince Feiseli had always been frugal and couldn’t bear to see such waste.
After deactivating the City Defense Array, Prince Feiseli went straight to his troops. He delivered a rousing speech, provided the Centaur Warriors with a hearty meal, and promised them numerous rewards.
The Warriors’ morale soared. They roared their intent to take human heads, even though there were no humans currently outside the city.
Robson, meanwhile, stayed with his newly acquired army of Gnolls, earth goblins, and Kobolds.
During this time, Robson had organized the corps occupying his panel slots, dividing them into legions based on their tribes and panel-designated levels.
A Gnoll regiment, a Kobold regiment, and a goblin regiment were thus formed.
Of course, the most important contingent was the army of the Mountain Rock Bear Race.
Robson had placed high hopes on this army.
Centaurs held a size advantage over most other creatures, especially the weaker races.
A charging Centaur army was a terrifying sight to behold.
If Robson wanted his Alien Race Corps to be effective, he had to find a way to slow the Centaur army down and force them into a melee.
Only by neutralizing the Centaurs’ speed advantage could he bring the full potential of his Tier Five Gnoll Leaders to bear.
Without a doubt, the Mountain Rock Bear Race was the force best suited to slowing down the Centaur Clan.
To that end, Robson had even scraped together dozens of sets of armor that the members of the Mountain Rock Bear Race could wear.
Of course, a few dozen sets of armor were not nearly enough to stop the entire Centaur army.
If one were to count every able-bodied fighter, the Centaur King City could field an army approaching six figures!
In a battle of this scale, once the enemy formed up, a few dozen Heavy Infantry soldiers would be practically useless.
However, Robson knew of a place where the Centaurs would be unable to get into formation.
....
Prince Feiseli was forced to get up at the crack of dawn.
And why "forced"? Because just a moment ago, he thought he’d heard... ’A Magic Crystal Cannon? What’s going on?’
Before long, a Centaur commander arrived at Prince Feiseli’s side to explain.
"Your Highness! Your Highness! Terrible news!"
Prince Feiseli hadn’t slept well for days because of the humans. He had finally managed to get some rest to prepare for the coming battle, so being woken up so abruptly put him in a foul mood.
Seeing the newcomer, Prince Feiseli immediately cursed aloud.
"What’s so terrible? Velen, when will you learn to be as composed as your father?" Prince Feiseli scolded.
The newcomer was named Velen, a junior commander in the Centaur army.
In the Beastman Empire, command positions were generally hereditary—a social structure born from their economic realities.
At the Prince’s words, Velen’s expression calmed slightly.
"Now, tell me. What exactly happened?" Prince Feiseli asked.
"Your Highness! The north gate! We’re under attack! They’ve built Siege Hammers and bombarded us with a Magic Crystal Cannon! The gate is about to give way!"
’A Magic Crystal Cannon?’ Prince Feiseli wondered. ’Have those humans turned back to attack us?’
’I must have been asleep when it fired.’
However, that wasn’t the point.
"We’re under attack?" Prince Feiseli’s expression shifted. "Aren’t there only Gnolls outside the city right now?"
’Did the humans double back for a surprise attack?’
’Have I been played?’
At this thought, Prince Feiseli felt a pang of regret. He shouldn’t have shut down the City Defense Array last night.
"It is the Gnolls! Your Highness, the Gnolls are the ones attacking!"
"What?!"
"Are you telling me that the Gnolls are attacking the Royal City of the Centaur Clan?"
Prince Feiseli was aghast.
’No... how dare they?’
Prince Feiseli had assumed that these lesser races were merely acting under duress from the humans. He believed that as soon as his grand army appeared, they would switch sides, just as they always had.
But Prince Feiseli had never, ever imagined...
...that these Gnolls would be so audacious! That they would not only refuse to surrender, but actually dare to launch an attack against him?
"It’s not just the Gnolls," Velen added. "There are goblins, Kobolds, and the Bear Race, too."
