Chapter 472: Chapter 220: Rout
This time, Chief Kandar’s order even carried a hint of panic, and his roar was much louder than before.
The Tiger Race Blood Warriors, still in the throes of fierce combat, finally began to realize something was wrong and looked around.
They hadn’t realized it before, but one glance sent a jolt of shock through them.
Only then did they discover that, at some unknown point, they had been surrounded by Gnolls. The allied troops who had been by their sides were now nowhere to be seen.
The Tiger Race Blood Warriors were belligerent, but that didn’t make them idiots. And it certainly didn’t mean they were fearless.
Quite the opposite. The key to becoming a Tiger Race Blood Warrior was the ability to train in a unique Tiger Race Cultivation Technique, which allowed them to coordinate seamlessly in battle.
As the saying goes, martial pursuits are a luxury of the wealthy. Every Tiger Race family that could produce an Extraordinary Blood Warrior was, without exception, a house of power and influence.
Seeing the scene around them, how could they not realize that their doom was at hand?
If Chief Kandar had ordered them to fight to the death, they might have stayed and fought on.
But since Chief Kandar himself was leading the retreat, what more was there to discuss?
"Retreat! Retreat!"
"Fall back to the main army!"
The Tiger Race Blood Warriors began a slow retreat, hoping to fall back into the welcoming ranks of their comrades.
Unfortunately, Chief Mole had been waiting for this moment. Why would he ever give them such an opportunity?
Chief Mole had over thirty Extraordinary members among his Gray Rock Bear Race elites. However, in the earlier melee against the Tiger Race Blood Warriors, they had lost dozens of their best Bear Race fighters. In contrast, the Tiger Race Warriors had only suffered a dozen or so wounded during their final retreat. There was no helping it; the gap between an Extraordinary and an ordinary warrior was simply too vast.
The Gray Rock Bear Race was known for its solidarity. Moreover, these Tiger Race Blood Warriors could be exchanged for quite a few prizes from that human lord...
For reasons both public and private, Chief Mole had no intention of letting this band of Tiger Race Warriors escape.
"The enemy is routing! All troops, charge!"
Chief Mole let out a great roar. Raising his massive axe, he charged into the crowd of Tiger Race Warriors and began to cut them down with abandon.
The Tiger Race Blood Warriors lived up to their reputation as the Extraordinary backbone of the Tiger Race Royal Court. Even in such a desperate situation, the Warriors at the rear had the presence of mind to stay behind and cover the retreat.
A desperate urgency gripped Chief Kandar’s heart as he tried to break through the encirclement.
However, the main Beastman army to the rear seemed to have abandoned its commander, retreating faster and faster to the point where they were on the verge of a total collapse.
’It’s over!’
’It’s completely over!’
As Chief Kandar fought, he saw the number of Gnolls only continue to swell. His heart sank into the abyss.
Seeing this, how could he not understand? ’I’m probably going to die here today.’
’How can these Gnolls be so terrifying! Are they even Gnolls anymore?’
’If all the Gnolls on the plains could be mobilized like this, what a horrifying picture that would paint?’
Chief Kandar didn’t dare to imagine it, nor could he think on it any longer. He could already hear the agonized screams from the Tiger Race Blood Warriors in the rearguard. A Tiger Race Warrior’s severed, bloody arm flew past his face, landing amongst the Gnolls and earth goblins. Then, those savages fell upon it like a treasure, gnawing it down to the bone.
The cut on the arm was clean and smooth. Without a second thought, Kandar knew it was the handiwork of those damned bears.
’So be it!’
"Halt! Form ranks!"
Chief Kandar shouted the command. The Tiger Race army was tribal anyway; without him as commander-in-chief, the individual clans fighting on their own wouldn’t necessarily be any less effective.
’Besides, this is already a hopeless situation...’
Since it was a hopeless situation, Chief Kandar gripped his scimitar and scanned his surroundings. He looked at the Gnolls and earth goblins who regarded him as prey, their eyes glowing with a strange scarlet fanaticism.
At Chief Kandar’s command, the entire legion of Tiger Race Blood Warriors halted. They closed ranks tightly around their chieftain, their tiger-like eyes glaring at the surrounding Gnolls.
As the situation escalated to this point, they all understood the true reason Chief Kandar had ordered them to retreat.
"Long live the Empire!"
Chief Kandar no longer conserved the sliver of aura he had been saving to preserve his life. A golden radiance erupted from his entire body.
’Since death is certain, I’ll see for myself today who the true kings of this grassland are—the Tiger Race People or the Gnolls!’
The Tiger Race Blood Warriors received the order and all halted. Their auras began to resonate with one another, making them seem like a single, unified entity.
"Long live the Empire! Long live the Royal Court!"
...
"Excellent!"
Chief Mole’s eyes lit up.
This was perhaps the one thing he admired about the Beastman Empire: its high-ranking Royal Family was never afraid of sacrifice. It was likely the only thing that made them worthy of their so-called noble bloodline.
"Bear Race Warriors! A steady retreat! Form a Shield Array!" Chief Mole roared once more.
In the past, Chief Mole might have gotten caught up in the heat of the moment and thrown his kinsmen into a life-or-death struggle against this band of Tiger Race People.
But now... perhaps it was Robson’s influence, but while Chief Mole could appreciate their valor, he refused to waste his own kinsmen in a bloody brawl against a group of Tiger Race People with a death wish. Especially not when they were all Extraordinary.
’I have less costly methods available. Why would I trade lives with you?’
Seeing this, Chief Kandar’s eyes widened in disbelief. He couldn’t believe it. After a century away from the grasslands, had the Gray Rock Bear Race lost even this basic fighting spirit?
