Chapter 532 - 248: Scared Pissless

Chapter 532: Chapter 248: Scared Pissless

The two large animals, seeing their master had returned, wagged their tails furiously and rubbed their heads hard against Yang Qi’s hand.

After comforting his grandmother, Hu Zi, and Leopard, Yang Qi stood up and looked toward the woodshed at the back of the house, where they stored miscellaneous items.

The woodshed door was closed, but through the crack at the bottom, a pair of wary, downcast eyes could be seen.

Yang Qi walked over and gently pushed the door open.

Light flooded into the dim woodshed.

Bai Wan was curled up on a pile of dry hay in the corner. Hearing the sound, it lifted its head. When it saw Yang Qi, its eyes instantly lit up, only to dim again just as quickly. Its ears drooped, its tail hung limply on the ground, and a low, mournful whimper rumbled in its throat.

Full of apprehension, it padded over to Yang Qi’s feet, lowered its head, and gently nuzzled his leg. Simultaneously, a clear thought was transmitted through their bond.

’I’m sorry, Master.’

’I’ve caused trouble.’

’I’ve made things difficult for you, Master.’

"It’s not your fault."

Yang Qi crouched down, cupped Bai Wan’s furry face in both hands, and gave it a firm rub. He looked directly into its eyes, which were filled with guilt and anxiety, and responded telepathically, his tone firm yet gentle.

’Bai Wan, this isn’t your fault. On the contrary, you did a great job. An excellent job. You protected what needed protecting and fulfilled your duty.’

’Really?’

Bai Wan’s eyes instantly lit up, but they still held a trace of uncertainty.

’Really.’

Yang Qi nodded, his expression turning serious. ’But I need you to tell me everything. How did you smell a dangerous substance on that old man on the back mountain this morning? Don’t leave out a single detail.’

Yang Qi and his Guardian Beasts could communicate telepathically, but not over very long distances.

That was why Yang Qi had raced back. It wasn’t until his car was approaching the village entrance that he was able to connect mentally with Bai Wan and get the gist of the situation.

Early this morning, Bai Wan had been on its usual walk in the back mountains when it encountered a shifty-looking old man. It had picked up a scent from him—the smell of a specific drug, one that had been drilled into its memory during its training with the Donghua City narcotics squad!

Heeding Yang Qi’s earlier warnings, and because of its own training-induced vigilance towards dangerous substances, it had moved in to track the man and give a warning. It only bit his wrist to stop him when the man tried to attack it with a wooden stick.

But the details weren’t enough.

Yang Qi needed more precise information to reconstruct the entire incident, to use as an ace up his sleeve for what was to come.

Feeling its master’s trust and encouragement, Bai Wan’s spirits clearly lifted.

It sat down, tilted its head, and began to recall everything carefully, telepathically recounting the morning’s events to Yang Qi in painstaking detail...

...

「Meanwhile, outside the courtyard gate.」

Jiang Dafu watched Yang Qi go inside and shut the door, and the intangible pressure on him seemed to lessen slightly.

He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, still shaken. But when he saw the thick wad of cash in Yang Dalin’s hand, greed once again overpowered his fear.

He put on a brave front, shouting at the door, "Yang! Don’t think hiding in there solves anything! This isn’t over! Fifty thousand! One cent less, and I’ll be here blocking your door every damn day!"

However, there was no response from inside the courtyard, only the threatening low growls of Hu Zi and Leopard coming from the other side of the door.

Jiang Dafu felt awkward and found himself in a difficult position, unable to back down gracefully.

The goons behind him exchanged glances. When Yang Qi had stared at them earlier, they too had felt a chill run down their spines.

"Brother Fa, what do we do now?" one of the goons asked in a hushed voice.

"What do we do? We wait!"

Jiang Dafu gritted his teeth and said viciously, "We’ll wait for Yang Dalin to deliver the money and see what the old man says. Damn it... that crazy dog... and that Yang kid. There’s something off about him!"

In truth, he was getting nervous, but he took comfort in being the "wronged party" and having strength in numbers, which allowed him to barely keep up the facade.

What he didn’t know was that Yang Qi had already made a phone call as he was entering the village.

He had called Luo Kaifeng, a captain in the Ningshan County Forest Police Department with whom he had a good relationship, asking him to pass a message to the county’s narcotics squad.

Honorary Police Dog "Bai Wan," on the mountain behind Yang Qi’s house, had discovered someone carrying drugs and had clashed with them as a result.

At the same time, he asked Luo Kaifeng to give a heads-up to the local public order department.

The message was that people from another village were causing a dispute, gathering a group of thugs to surround his home, making threats, and severely disrupting the normal lives of the villagers. He was requesting the police be dispatched to handle the situation and restore order.

This time, Yang Qi had no intention of handling things quietly or relying on the village’s mediation.

His grandmother had been frightened, Bai Wan had been slandered, and the other party was suspected of being involved with drugs.

Jiang Fugui, Jiang Dafu—neither of them was getting away with this!

...

「Ningshan County People’s Hospital, the corridor outside the emergency department.」

The smell of disinfectant mingled with the din of voices.

Jiang Fugui was sitting on a chair in the corridor, his right wrist wrapped in thick gauze. His expression, however, wasn’t that of a seriously injured patient; instead, it held a hint of cunning and shamelessness.

He was grabbing the sleeve of a young doctor’s white coat, shouting and spraying spittle as he spoke.

"Doctor, this hand of mine hurts something fierce! It’s an excruciating pain! The bone and tendons must be injured! A few stitches won’t cut it, I need to be admitted!"

"You have to examine it properly, treat it properly! I won’t rest easy unless I’m admitted! What if there are lasting complications? What’s an old man like me supposed to do then?"

The young doctor looked helpless as he tried to pry the old man’s hand off his sleeve. "Sir, please calm down," he pleaded. "It’s a dog bite. We’ve taken X-rays—the bone is fine, and no tendons are torn. The cleaning and stitching went perfectly. You really don’t need to be hospitalized."

"You just need to come back on schedule for dressing changes and your shots. Hospital beds are in short supply..."

"Short supply? What are you talking about? I see plenty of empty beds right over there! You just don’t want to admit me! Are you worried I can’t pay? I have money!"
