Chapter 747: Chapter 748: Making Inquiries
"A tavern?"
The driver was surprised.
"My lord, why would you suddenly want to go to a place like that?"
Shui Xingqiu normally didn’t touch a drop of alcohol. Even at palace banquets, the cup before him was always filled with water.
The story was that when he was a child living in exile, he had been bullied and forced to drink so much alcohol that he nearly died.
Ever since then, he had refused to touch the stuff.
The Monarch, understanding his situation, had graciously granted him this special privilege.
Shui Xingqiu said nothing, merely giving him a cold glance.
The driver froze in terror!
’How could I forget? The man before me has never been good-tempered!’
’And I actually dared to question his decision!’
"M-my lord, forgive me! I—"
"Just get there quickly."
Shui Xingqiu cut him off and lowered the curtain.
It was broad daylight, and people were constantly passing by. He had no intention of wasting time here and drawing attention.
The driver, as if granted a pardon, hurriedly said, "Yes! Yes!"
With that, he cracked the whip.
"HYAH—!"
The carriage hurried through the streets.
It was the driver’s first time in the Capital City, so he was unfamiliar with the roads. Fortunately, the Yunlai Tavern was so famous that he could simply grab anyone on the street for directions, and they could point the way.
As a result, they arrived without much time or effort.
"My lord, this is the Yunlai Tavern!"
The driver wiped the sweat from his brow, his voice full of unconcealed surprise as he sized up the tavern before them.
"It’s not even noon, yet it’s already this crowded?"
People were coming and going. It was a bustling scene.
Shui Xingqiu stepped down from the carriage, his gaze sweeping slowly over the area.
Although he had parted on bad terms with Xiao Chenglin yesterday, the encounter had sparked a great interest in Ye Chutang.
He was curious to see just how capable this woman, whom they all spoke of in such mythic terms, really was.
And when it came to Ye Chutang, the most famous place—and the quickest way to learn about her—was this very Yunlai Tavern.
Shui Xingqiu had just come to a stop when a sharp-eyed waiter approached with a beaming smile to welcome him.
"Sir, do you have a reservation?"
"No," Shui Xingqiu said.
’A tavern that requires reservations?’
"Ah," the waiter exclaimed. "All the tables on the second floor are full today. Would the main hall on the first floor be all right?"
Shui Xingqiu didn’t mind, and he ended up taking a seat in a remote corner.
"A pot of your finest wine will do."
"Right away!"
The waiter acknowledged the order and was about to turn away when he heard Shui Xingqiu ask, "I hear this is the property of the Ye Family’s Second Miss?"
The waiter gave him a somewhat surprised look. "You must be from out of town, sir?"
This was common knowledge in the Capital City. Anyone who had to ask was surely not a local.
Besides... the man was dressed in expensive clothes, carried himself with a distinguished air, and above all, had a face that was impossible to forget. In truth, the waiter already had his answer when he asked.
If a person like this were in the Capital City, he certainly wouldn’t be unknown.
"Our tavern, yes, it was indeed built from the ground up by the Second Miss herself!"
At the mention of Ye Chutang, the waiter’s face lit up with pride.
"You’ve certainly come to the right place today, sir! The wine at our tavern can’t be found anywhere else!"
Shui Xingqiu saw his eager attitude and wanted to inquire further, but he soon discovered that while the waiter seemed enthusiastic, his lips were sealed tight whenever the questions concerned Ye Chutang.
He only spoke of things that were common knowledge and of little importance.
As for anything more, Shui Xingqiu tried probing several times but couldn’t get a single whisper of information.
His brows gradually furrowed as it finally dawned on him.
—This Ye Chutang really did have a few tricks up her sleeve.
