Chapter 747.2: The Sacrifice For Humanity
"Holy shit?! Why didn't that do anything?!" the player exclaimed in disbelief.
Sideline Slacking froze for a split second before suddenly realizing something and yelling back, "The right leg! The injection went into the right leg! Aim for the right side of its body!"
His knowledge of biology was fairly limited. He didn't really understand how biological exoframe worked, but comparing it to anesthesia, only the area where the injection was administered went numb.
By the same logic, perhaps only the injected area had its regenerative ability suppressed.
"Oh shit!" The player immediately came to the same realization. He quickly loaded another rocket into the launcher, aimed once more at the staggering Plague Champion, and squeezed the trigger.
"RPG!"
Another trail of white smoke streaked through the tunnel.
This time, the rocket detonated directly beside the monster's right leg. The explosion sent countless fragments tearing through the right half of its body like a violent storm.
The Plague Champion roared in agony. Staring at the torrent of blood pouring from the right side of its body, its eyes filled with utter panic. Its regenerative ability had stopped working. Not only that, the entire right side of its body had seemingly gone numb. Its strength visibly drained away by the second.
Without giving it even the slightest chance to recover, Sideline Slacking rushed forward with the Flame Dragon and emptied the entire magazine into the retreating monster.
A rapid succession of deafening blasts echoed through the tunnel until at last, the towering body collapsed heavily onto the ground and never moved again.
Seeing the boss finally fall, the players erupted into jubilant cheers.
The two surviving soldiers of the Alpha Mobile Task Force stared blankly at the friendly reinforcements that had arrived.
Walking over to one of them, Sideline Slacking gave a concise explanation. "I'm Sideline Slacking, commander of the New Alliance's Death Corps. About half an hour ago, the Torch Church launched coordinated assaults against nearly every one of our frontline positions, especially the Guardian Manor Military Base."
One of the soldiers looked at him and asked, "Then... why are you here?"
"Because this place needs us." Sideline Slacking glanced at the dead Plague Champion and grinned. "Besides, the enemy's attention has to be focused on the Guardian Manor Military Base right now. This is the best opportunity we'll ever have to capture Blood Peak. The administrator ordered us to seize the Hive hidden deep inside Blood Peak at all costs!"
"Understood." The soldier who asked nodded. White mist escaped from his damaged gas mask as he spoke again. "We'll support you with everything we've got."
Smiling, Sideline Slacking asked, "I've introduced myself. What about you? What's your name? Where's your squad leader?"
The soldier answered briefly. "Alpha-1006. Our squad leader is everywhere. There's no need to concern yourself with him. You can speak directly to me."
Sideline Slacking paused before laughing and extending a fist. "That name's way too long... I'll just call you Sixy."
The man nodded. He bumped fists with Sideline Slacking before chambering another round into his weapon. When he was done, he finally asked, "Tell me your plan."
Sideline Slacking replied, "We're going straight for the Hive itself. Once we eliminate the source of the plague, those mutants won't amount to much."
Alpha-1006 looked at him without expression and asked, "You brought high-yield explosives?"
"We won't be needing those." Leading 20 Crunchers as fat as mountains, Eye Owe Money walked over from behind with a cheerful grin. "These guys will be enough."
Those he brought were already the smallest of the bunch. The larger ones were simply too fat to squeeze through the tunnels. He had no idea why they looked like that. Falling Feather's minions all knew how to keep themselves in shape, but the creatures he had raised behaved like complete idiots. All they ever did was gorge themselves until they became giant balls of flesh.
Outside of hauling supplies or helping build bridges, they were practically useless in open combat.
But now, they finally had a job suited for them.
The moment Alpha-1006 saw them, he immediately understood their intentions and nodded. "Understood. I'll cover you."
The two forces merged into one, reversing their earlier decline as they resumed their assault deeper into Blood Peak.
There had originally been 50 Plague Champions equipped with biological exoframes. The Alpha Mobile Task Force had already killed 10 and nearly 40 still remained.
Each Plague Champion possessed different abilities.
Like the Plague Monks, they all had grotesquely twisted forms and unpredictable methods of combat, employing tactics so brutally ruthless that they sent chills down one's spine.
For both the Alpha Mobile Task Force and the Death Corps, however, this level of terror was nothing more than a drizzle. It was especially so for the latter.
They were a group that had never feared the Tide itself. They had once charged headlong into hordes of offshoots and evolved forms numbering hundreds of times their own, armed with nothing more than primitive weapons. Now that their equipment had reached heights they had never imagined, there was even less reason for them to hesitate.
The bloody slaughter continued throughout every corner of the tunnels. The stench of fresh blood grew so overpowering that it even drowned out the rotten odor of the spores.
Both sides possessed beliefs they would defend at all costs and neither side had any room to retreat. Because of that, both suffered horrific casualties.
Before long, only half of the remaining Plague Champions were still standing and most of those survivors were already panting heavily. Their stamina and regenerative abilities alike had reached their limits.
Standing in their “palace,” Sodo's face gradually filled with fear. The manic excitement from earlier had completely vanished as he felt the lives of the faithful fading away. He could hear the Lord of Plague crying out in agony.
The god he worshipped was calling to him, urging him to stop those crude invaders no matter the cost. However, those barbaric invaders seemed endless. No matter how many fell, more constantly took their place.
Even the Beast King's personal guards could no longer withstand the ceaseless onslaught!
His obese body trembled and his toad-like cheeks quivered as he muttered softly, "O revered Great Lord of Plague... Your servant's frail body cannot stop them. Please grant me a stronger body, and I shall devour every last one of them!"
He continued praying in a whisper and his ugly face was filled with sincere devotion. However, no one answered his prayers. Not the Hive hidden deep within the pit, nor the Beast King himself, who controlled everything from behind the scenes.
Both had become increasingly tense, utterly stunned by the situation unfolding before them.
It was especially so for the Beast King.
He had assumed that once the Guardian Manor Military Base came under threat, the coalition would inevitably recall troops from every front to reinforce it.
Instead, they refused to abandon Blood Peak, or the Alpha Mobile Task Force that was nearly trapped within it.
At least 3,000 soldiers had been sent to the peak and most of them were awakeners. Their fearless style of fighting instilled fear even in the Plague Monks, whose sense of pain had long since been removed.
Originally, he had no intention of intervening personally. But if he failed to deal with these troublesome enemies, he feared he would never get the chance to leave this place and meet that administrator.
His sickly green eyes glared at the soldiers before him.
Directly controlling the body of a Plague Champion, the Beast King let out a commanding growl, "Scram, all of you!"
His voice carried overwhelming mental pressure, like the instinctive dominance that a superior predator exerted over those lower on the food chain.
Yet something happened that astonished him even more. Rather than showing fear upon hearing his voice, every single pair of eyes he saw through the eyes of the Plague Champion lit up with excitement.
"Holy shit! This thing can actually speak our language!"
“Holy mother of god! This has to be the real boss this time, right?!”
Racking his shotgun, Lawless Madman let out an excited howl. "Alright, brothers! Pull the boss’ aggro!"
He was answered by a chorus of incomprehensible battle cries.
"AWO, AWO, AWO, AWO, AWOOOOO!"
"???" The Beast King froze for a moment as he watched the group suddenly erupt with excitement.
Only after a rifle grenade exploded in front of him did he finally let out an enraged roar and charge toward the noisy crowd. His right arm, shaped like a battle axe, swept sideways and sent one of the players, shield and all, flying with a single swing.
Yet to his surprise, the more brutal and overwhelming he appeared, the more excited those noisy humans became. Every pair of eyes burned with fighting spirit, as though they had laid eyes upon some irresistible prey.
It was precisely this arrogant and irreverent disrespect that caused the fury burning in his chest to boil over even further.
These weak little humans... Are they all masochists?!
With unprecedented rage surging through him, the Beast King tried to steady his breathing, only to realize he could no longer restrain his own emotions.
Savage power coursed through his veins, no longer subject to his conscious will.
The sensation resembled hunger itself, a primal instinct shared by all living creatures.
The only reason he had previously been able to suppress his emotions and make perfectly rational decisions was because, while residing within the Sanctuary, he possessed no physical body in the mortal world.
He had remained detached from mortal flesh for far too long, long enough to forget how to restrain instinct.
"ROAR!"
Completely consumed by rage, he charged at the insects standing in his way like a wild stallion that had broken free of its reins.
The players, however, simply admired how realistic the boss behaved, especially the one who had been launched away first. After waking up, he coughed up a mouthful of blood while screaming in excitement, "Come on, brothers! Push harder! The boss is tilted!"
