The deepest canyon currently on the Chenping Continent was the Bai Abyss, located in the Northern Region, created forty thousand years ago when Realman Bai Shang of Wind Ravine Valley split the ground beneath Floating Light Summit with a single sword stroke, reaching a depth of over twelve thousand zhang.
But now, this enormous cavern that had appeared at the bottom of South Yu Lake, located twenty-seven hundred li west of Du Cang Mountain, was likely even deeper than the Bai Abyss.
This conclusion could be drawn from the fact that the high-grade spirit stone that Bai Jinye had just tossed into the cavern had yet to produce any echo for quite some time.
After all, if Bai Jinye's high-grade spirit stone had been thrown into the Bai Abyss, then relying on the keen spiritual sense and hearing of a Myriad Transformations Realm cultivator, he would definitely have been able to hear the sound of the stone striking the bottom of the abyss.
The depth was at least over twenty thousand zhang.
Or rather, the depth was upwards of one hundred thirty li.
There had to be something strange about this enormous cavern.
Even Li Haowen and Bai Jinye, both being Myriad Transformations Realm cultivators, had to muster their full alertness and approach with extreme caution when facing this massive cavern that was dozens of feet in diameter.
Bai Jinye took another step toward the edge of the cavern, and a few pebbles rolled into the abyss below with the movement of his steps.
"Whoa."
Seeing this, Bai Jinye revealed a teasing smile and turned his head toward Li Haowen:
"Pretty darn creepy."
Indeed, even though cultivators above the Martial Spring Realm could fly freely through the air at will, facing such a lightless, bottomless abyss like this would still make anyone somewhat nervous.
Fear of the unknown was human instinct.
Even cultivators were no exception.
But fear, after all, could be overcome.
"Let's go!"
Bai Jinye, having wiped the smile off his face, turned slightly serious and composed, then took another step forward and leaped into that unfathomably deep, enormous cavern.
Li Haowen followed right behind him, taking two steps forward and leaping in as well.
Apart from the two Mirage Palace disciples that Li Haowen had ordered to stand guard outside the cavern, the other ten or so people all followed the two Myriad Transformations Realm cultivators and jumped into the cavern one after another.
The air currents surging up from the depths of the cavern were bitterly cold, causing the Yuanji Sword and Xiaohua Sword at Li Haowen's waist to tremble incessantly, producing the clinking sounds of metal striking metal.
Moreover, the deeper they fell into the cavern, the dimmer the light became.
At first, he could still clearly see the figure of Bai Jinye ahead of him.
But as they sank deeper and deeper, the pale golden daoist robes Bai Jinye wore grew increasingly faint in Li Haowen's vision, until finally disappearing entirely, swallowed into pitch-black darkness.
Li Haowen could only rely on his spiritual sense as a Myriad Transformations Realm cultivator to track Bai Jinye's current position.
He could clearly feel that Bai Jinye's rate of descent was growing faster and faster.
If this continued, Bai Jinye would soon slip beyond the range of his spiritual sense perception.
But he couldn't just recklessly chase after Bai Jinye, because Li Haowen still needed to consider those Passable God Realm and Martial Spring Realm cultivators flying behind him into the depths of the cavern.
Li Haowen needed to look out for his fellow cultivators.
"Elder Bai, hold on!"
So he could only shout into the depths of the cavern like this.
But Bai Jinye gave Li Haowen no response whatsoever, nor did his speed slow down. He simply continued falling deeper into the cavern.
Soon after, Bai Jinye's figure completely vanished from the range of Li Haowen's spiritual sense perception.
This left Li Haowen feeling somewhat perplexed.
Because in his understanding, Bai Jinye was not the type to be reckless, headstrong, or careless about his companions.
Otherwise, Bai Jinye wouldn't have enjoyed such high prestige on Du Cang Mountain and within Lingxiao Temple.
But Li Haowen's confusion didn't last long.
Because in the next instant, Li Haowen also began to realize that he himself could no longer control his body's descent.
"It's Spiritual Energy Turbulence!"
A cultivator's startled cry came from behind Li Haowen.
Fierce and chaotic spiritual energy swept up from the bottom of the abyss, engulfing all the cultivators like a tidal wave, continuing to drag them downward into this almost perfectly vertical, pitch-black abyss.
The rate of descent grew faster and faster.
Yet this nearly endless abyss seemed as if it truly had no bottom at all.
And so, the group of cultivators continued falling downward for roughly the time it takes to burn half a stick of incense.
Li Haowen's spiritual sense finally detected something unusual.
It was the ground!
After falling roughly another hundred zhang or so, they would reach the true bottom of this cavern!
And that hundred zhang of distance, at their current falling speed, would pass in an instant!
Even if Li Haowen was a Myriad Transformations Realm cultivator, smashing into the ground at this speed would likely mean more misfortune than good fortune.
He had to do something.
Li Haowen began to frantically activate his Martial Spring, true qi surging throughout his body. All nine thousand-plus strands of innate true energy suspended above his Martial Spring were mobilized, and with all his might, he blasted all of his innate true energy toward the ground in a simple, unadorned strike.
"Ha!"
He let out a fierce shout.
Boom!
Li Haowen's vast, abyss-like innate true energy slammed into the ground, and the massive backlash of air pressure rushing back up slowed his descent considerably, allowing him to barely maintain his footing when he finally landed at the bottom of the cavern, without suffering any significant injury.
But the dozen or so Passable God Realm and Martial Spring Realm disciples behind him were not so fortunate.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
After more than a dozen consecutive muffled impacts, the very bottom of this cavern fell into complete dead silence.
Only the sound of Li Haowen's own breathing and heartbeat remained.
The very bottom of this enormous cavern was far too dark, yet the air was circulating.
So Li Haowen raised his hand and gave a gentle snap of his fingers. A wisp of flame about four inches long rose from his fingertip, burning fiercely while illuminating everything around him.
Li Haowen surveyed the dozen or so corpses around him that resembled "muddy messes."
All the cultivators who had leaped down with him had met this very end.
The six-person squad that had been sent into this cavern first must have met an even worse fate than these people, he thought.
While lamenting this in his heart, Li Haowen raised his head and looked upward by the light of the flame burning at his fingertip.
There was only pitch-black darkness. He couldn't see anything at all.
Moreover, the cavern was almost entirely covered in Spiritual Energy Turbulence.
It would be nearly impossible to make his way back up on his own.
There were only two ways to leave this cavern: one was to find a path leading to the outside, and the other was to wait for those two Mirage Palace disciples above the cavern to return and report, then await rescue from cultivators of the upper three realms.
