Chapter 2447: Chapter 2350: Fated to Be Alone Forever
"Are you sure this test result is correct, really no problem?"
Chen Xiaolong clung to a sliver of hope, yearning to hear a different answer from his friend.
But clearly he was overthinking it. He was not questioning or blaming his friend, but to his friend’s ears, it sounded exactly like that.
This sent his friend into a sudden rage:
"Chen Xiaolong, what do you mean, I worked overtime all night to do this test for you, and now you’re doubting me?"
"Let me tell you, I’ve been in this field for over a decade, and I dare claim to be second to none! If you don’t trust my results, you can surely find someone else to verify!"
"I think you’re out of your mind, bringing me a bottle of vegetable soup and making me work overtime for it in such a sneaky manner. I feel embarrassed even doing this test for you. Next time something like this comes up, don’t bother calling me!"
His friend gave Chen Xiaolong a verbal lashing and angrily hung up the phone, giving Chen Xiaolong no chance to explain.
Chen Xiaolong was left speechless by the scolding, utterly dumbfounded, only snapping back to reality when he heard the beep-beep-beep of the phone.
"Damn!"
Chen Xiaolong suddenly threw the test report he was holding onto the ground, realizing then he’d been played by Huo Sining.
Yet, he had no recourse against that woman. He thought he’d finally caught some dirt on her, dreaming he could finally bring her down, but it turned out to be nothing more than wishful thinking.
Unbeknownst to Chen Xiaolong, Huo Sining had already predicted the outcome, so when she saw the somber-faced Chen Xiaolong visiting early that morning, she wasn’t surprised at all and continued packing her belongings in the tent.
Indeed, Guo Dongliang had cleared her of suspicion, and she had received Zhou Shitao’s stamped report, allowing her to leave.
She had already arranged to meet Zhang Xiaomei and Zhang Xiuchun at the foot of the mountain, and then set off together for Xiang Province.
Receiving the news of Huo Sining’s withdrawal from the Luofu Mountain archaeological project, Chen Xiaolong arrived at the camp early that morning. Apparently, he was quite upset by yesterday’s report, his expression extremely unpleasant, as dark as could be.
But Huo Sining didn’t care what Chen Xiaolong thought. She continued packing her suitcase nonchalantly, humming a tune while distributing everyday items she didn’t intend to take to the other members of the archaeological team.
Watching Huo Sining’s casual demeanor, Chen Xiaolong found it increasingly irritating. Anger welled up within him, and he couldn’t help but sneer at Huo Sining:
"Don’t be so smug, this isn’t over yet. You think this clears you of suspicion and evades legal punishment? I’ll tell you, justice always prevails. One day, I’ll find the evidence and make sure you receive the penalty you deserve!"
"Then let’s wait for the day you find the evidence!" Huo Sining lifted her head and looked at Chen Xiaolong coolly.
"In the meantime, Officer Chen, please be mindful of your position. Persistently harassing me without evidence is quite annoying. I’m letting it slide because I’m patient, but anyone else would have made you take off that police uniform and return home to farm!"
Chen Xiaolong sneered, "I think you’re guilty, otherwise why fear an investigation?"
"Guilty? That’s amusing. I’m open and honest. I believe the guilty party is someone else."
Chen Xiaolong was put at a loss by Huo Sining’s words, recalling the vegetable soup sample he had pilfered from her the previous day, his expression turning uneasy.
"Murder merits death, it’s a given. No matter how perfect your deeds, you can’t evade the consequences. Instead of living day-to-day fearful, haunted by your conscience, why not confess quickly!" Chen Xiaolong declared righteously.
Huo Sining rolled her eyes carelessly and turned back to smirk at Chen Xiaolong:
"I’m certain my conscience is clear. But Officer Chen, I highly doubt your motives. Why are you so fixated on me — could it be that you’re... interested in me?"
Chen Xiaolong was infuriated by Huo Sining’s sudden comment, jumping up in a rage, his face flushing bright red. He pointed at Huo Sining, sputtering incoherently:
"You— you woman, what—what nonsense are you spouting?! You’re shameless and unreasonable!"
Frustrated, Chen Xiaolong chose not to argue further with Huo Sining, turned around and briskly walked away, his demeanor resembling a hurried escape.
Initially, Huo Sining had been quite annoyed by this persistent buzzing fly-like fellow, but seeing Chen Xiaolong’s flustered manner now, she couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
Watching the embarrassed officer was amusing; he was clearly bashful. She was used to dealing with slick-talking police officers, but someone as innocent as Chen Xiaolong was a first.
Now she somewhat understood why Chen Xiaolong zeroed in on her accusation. It was clear he was single-mindedly focused on solving cases, ignorant of social nuances, definitely inexperienced in relationships, hence his lack of human touch!
It’s no surprise Zhang Shuang found him peculiar and inaccessible. She suspected he’d never find a wife, as marrying someone like him would be pure torment!
Oops, strayed off-topic. Huo Sining shook her head in amusement and then went to find Su Qingqing.
Though she was withdrawing from the archaeological team, there was still plenty of work left. The team needed to stay at Luofu Mountain for at least a few more months. Although Huo Sining wouldn’t be there, several professors would need to continue their work, especially Zhou Shitao, whose endurance Huo Sining had doubts about.
So Huo Sining handed over the remaining vegetable packages to Su Qingqing, instructing her to cook them for the professors each day. If they ran out, she would send more, insisting Qingqing shouldn’t skimp.
Su Qingqing was more than eager to oblige, having truly tasted the benefits of the vegetable soup.
Throughout these days, she had been working under intense conditions, sleeping little and having no time for skincare, yet her skin became smoother and whiter, neither developing acne nor showing any pores, making her appear rejuvenated, unlike someone who had been in the mountains for over half a month.
Although Huo Sining hadn’t explicitly stated, Su Qingqing was well aware the vegetable soup attributed these benefits, because anything Huo Sining provided was always top grade. Over the years, she had benefited countless times from Huo Sining.
