Chapter 1760: Chapter 1323: Comparing Myself to Yesterday_3

Guoguo said, and asked Bun, "Fourth Brother, am I right?"

"Yeah."

Bun nodded earnestly.

Guoguo then asked Min Rui and Ming Han, "Big Brother, Second Brother, what do you guys think?"

"That’s right, just like you said. If we go with Mom, Dad gets shy—he wants to kiss Mom or ask her for a kiss, but I bet he wouldn’t dare." Ming Han grinned as he spoke, thinking that Guoguo, Bun, and Tangyuan were all just too adorable for words.

Min Rui: "You’re right."

Growing up, Min Rui knew it better than anyone: in Luo Yanqing’s eyes, there was only Kang Li—when it came to the kids, they were basically extras.

Even the three little ones, in their father’s opinion, were just as underwhelming as the three big ones!

He felt like their existence was getting in the way of him showing affection to their mom.

Kang Li didn’t drive very fast, since there was no rush; it was fine to just keep to the usual speed.

So, by the time the car pulled into the research institute, there was still just under an hour left before the end of the workday.

She took her things out of her bag and got them sorted, then headed for Director Song’s office—to bring her godfather some snacks and a long black down coat.

"Li-bao! What brings you to the institute? It’s so cold—what if you catch a chill!"

When he heard a knock, Director Song casually called, "Come in." But when the door opened and he saw Kang Li, his face lit up with delight—then, almost instantly, with concern.

"I came to see you and Luo Yanqing."

Kang Li smiled as she set the paper bag of snacks on the coffee table. Then she took the down coat out of another bag and asked, "Are you busy right now?"

"Not busy."

Director Song shook his head.

"Then try on this down jacket. I bought one for both you and Luo Yanqing."

Unzipping the coat, Kang Li looked at Director Song and said, "This one’s really good quality—it’s super warm."

"These past few years, you haven’t stopped buying clothes for me and your godmother. Just the down coats—you’ve already gotten at least two! I’ve already got so many clothes I can’t wear them all, and now you’ve bought another one. What a waste of money!"

Director Song got up, slightly exasperated. He walked out from behind his desk, and with Kang Li’s help, put on the down coat.

The length and the fit were just right.

"Fits perfectly."

There was a happy twinkle in Kang Li’s eyes.

"Yeah."

Director Song nodded.

Taking off the coat and handing it back to Kang Li, Director Song said, "I spend pretty much all day in my office. I don’t really need a down coat."

"Don’t you ever eat at the canteen? Don’t you ever go to another building?"

Kang Li folded up the coat and put it back in the bag. She smiled, "Even if it hasn’t snowed yet this year, it’s still colder than usual—dry and freezing, and windy too. You really do have to keep warm."

"Alright, alright. Your godfather will listen—anytime I go out, I’ll bundle up."

Director Song said this in a tone full of affection, then asked, "You dropping by all of a sudden— is there something on your mind?"

"Mm-hmm."

Kang Li nodded. "The institute’s busy, and Luo Yanqing can’t get any time off. So I’m thinking of taking the kids back home for the New Year. My family’s holding a big birthday celebration for my grandpa, too. If we go back early, I can help out."

"A milestone birthday is a big deal. Of course you should go home. If Yanqing could get some time off over the New Year and go with you, that’d be ideal."

Director Song said, "But it doesn’t seem likely this Spring Festival— he’s got too much on his plate."

"I know he’s busy."

Kang Li smiled, then asked, "Is Luo Yanqing remembering to eat?"

"Don’t worry. With me keeping an eye on him, if that kid won’t go eat in the canteen, I’ll bring him food myself and watch him finish it. I even make him close his eyes and rest for half an hour before I’ll let him get back to work."

"He’s not staying up all night, is he?"

"...Sometimes, but not all night."

"Good health is the foundation for everything. If you wear yourself out, forget about making contributions to the country."

"You’re absolutely right."

Director Song nodded in agreement.

...

As soon as the workday was over, Director Song helped Kang Li by calling Luo Yanqing’s research group. When the group heard the boss’s wife was in the institute, Luo Yanqing actually told his team to wrap up for the day—a rare occurrence.

He Wei and the other group members were delighted, and all thought the same thing: it must be because Kang Li came to see Luo Yanqing. Otherwise, there was no way their workaholic leader would let them leave early.

After Luo Yanqing left, He Wei asked his colleague Yang Fan, "Xiao Yang, who was it on the phone just now with the team leader?"

"Director Song."

Yang Fan sat close to the phone and had picked it up as soon as it rang, immediately recognizing Director Song’s voice. So when He Wei asked now, he didn’t keep it a secret.

"Did Director Song say Comrade Kang was here, and tell our group leader to get off work quickly?"

He Wei’s eyes shone with curiosity.

Yang Fan replied, "That I don’t know. Director Song just said for our leader to take the call." Yang, who’d been working at the institute less than three years, was still pretty young, but quite capable, and Luo Yanqing had a high opinion of him.

He Wei said, "I bet it’s because the leader’s wife, Comrade Kang, is here. Otherwise, there’s no way he’d let us get off work this early."
