Chapter 249: Chapter 248: Just Hold On, I’ll Be Quick
"Hurry up and do it! We missed this one last night. Do you have any idea how much risk we’re taking coming here in secret tonight?"
"If our superiors investigate, neither of us will get off easy!"
A figure leaped down from the massive beast’s shadow, saying impatiently, "Besides, you failed the summoning last night. What makes you think you’ll succeed in summoning this Blood Coagulation Realm practitioner today?"
"Enough chatter!"
The enormous beast’s head swayed, clearly angered by the string of questions.
The figure emerged slightly from beneath the locust tree, its striped, multicolored fur revealed in the moonlight.
This was, unmistakably, a ferocious tiger!
The tiger’s lips, framing fangs nearly a foot long, parted, and it spoke in a cold, human voice:
"There were over forty people last night. It’s perfectly normal that the Blood Coagulation Realm target couldn’t be summoned!"
"Today, there is only one. How could I possibly fail?"
The man didn’t reply. He only glanced at the wings of flesh and blood fused to the striped tiger’s back and shook his head inwardly:
’It just ate some flesh and blood, formed a pair of wings through some cheap trick, and now it really thinks it’s a Demon King?’
Seeing the figure beside it remain silent, the Tiger Demon knew he was unhappy about this trip and added:
"Rest assured, once I have refined this person, I shall grant you a drop of my essence blood."
Refining a Tiger Demon’s essence blood would bring immense benefits to one’s physique and origin.
The expression on the man’s face finally softened. "That would be for the best. But time is of the essence. I must ask you, Demon King, to act quickly, lest delays breed new problems."
The massive tiger head gave a slight nod and delayed no further. It straightened its mountain-like body, its head held high, looking monstrous under the moonlight.
The king-character marking on its forehead began to glow faintly, and a spectral fire seemed to flicker within its tiger eyes.
Then, it let out a low, deep growl:
"Come!"
As the Tiger Demon’s voice fell.
「In a side courtyard of the Liu family residence.」
"NGH... Wu Chen!"
Sun Yuting, who had been fast asleep, felt her mind turn to mush. Her body began to move uncontrollably in response to the summons.
The nine origins within her body instantly sensed that something was wrong. They spun wildly, protecting her heart meridians and granting Sun Yuting a moment of clarity, allowing her to cry out.
In truth, even without her shout, Wu Chen had already noticed something was amiss.
’They’re here, are they?’
He rose in an instant, blade in hand, and moved to the girl, who had already sat up.
He watched as Sun Yuting stood up involuntarily, clearly under complete control.
"Wu Chen—"
Sun Yuting’s voice held a sob. This time, she could feel the pull of the summons was especially strong, unlike last night when there was still room to struggle.
Now, she had to follow the instructions in her mind and walk out of the Liu family residence, step by step.
"It’s okay. I’m here."
The gentle voice by her ear instantly put her at ease.
Then, she felt her body lighten and knew that Wu Chen had swept her up into his arms, his arm around her waist.
"..."
A scorching, dry heat washed over him. It was like holding a furnace, even hotter than the night before.
Wu Chen dared not delay. Just like last night, he mobilized his cold-tempered origin energy and directed it to envelop Sun Yuting.
An icy chill swept over her whole body, and her temperature gradually returned to normal. The confusion in Sun Yuting’s eyes faded slightly, allowing her to see what was in front of her.
"Can you sense where they are?"
Seeing Sun Yuting come to her senses, the light returning to her eyes, Wu Chen stepped out of the room and into the courtyard, whispering the question to the girl in his arms.
"Mhm!" Sun Yuting’s expression was strange, as if she were in extreme discomfort, and she forced out a muffled confirmation.
Inside, her body felt like it was being roasted by flames, yet on the surface, she felt waves of pleasant coolness, as if a hand were constantly caressing her skin.
She hadn’t noticed this feeling last night. But today, because she was awakened by the coolness from Wu Chen’s hands so soon after the summoning began, the sensation was exceptionally clear to Sun Yuting.
She bit down on her lip, suppressing the tremor in her throat, and said, "He’s... under the locust tree south of the town we visited today."
After speaking, her body tensed into a ball, and her hands gripped Wu Chen’s lapels tightly. She buried her face in his chest, not wanting the young man to see her strange state.
"..."
Wu Chen naturally knew that Sun Yuting must be suffering immensely at this moment.
The mastermind had returned, undoubtedly for Sun Yuting.
A targeted summons like this... its destructive power was likely ravaging everything inside the girl’s body, threatening to turn her into a pool of blood.
For the sake of Sun Yuting’s health, Wu Chen had no choice but to increase the intensity!
The intensity of his cold qi, of course.
Feeling the girl in his arms still trembling, a sob catching in her breath, it seemed his efforts alone weren’t enough to solve her current problem. He had to deal with the source.
Wu Chen stopped hesitating. With a light leap, he was atop a wall.
He looked out to see countless torches lighting up the town’s streets and alleys, and beneath them, heavily armed Guards and Hunters stood watch.
But to Wu Chen, this meant nothing.
He dropped down from the wall without a sound, then sped through the shadows of the corners, moving like the wind.
These Guards were, at best, Martial Artists in the Meridian Passage Realm. None of them could possibly detect a figure flashing past them.
Wu Chen made it out of town easily without attracting any attention.
He continued south.
When the lonely old locust tree came into view, even from a great distance, Wu Chen could sense two auras emanating from beneath it.
One of the auras was like a fire of pure yang, utterly resolute. Though it made no display of its power, simply standing there, it gave off an invincible feeling.
The other was weak, not even worth mentioning.
"Heh, to deliver yourself right to my doorstep. How interesting."
The figure coiled beneath the locust tree saw that there were two arrivals. It let out a faint laugh and slowly rose.
Its arching back was like a mountain rising. Before it even moved, its aura surged outward, sending the fallen leaves around it scattering in all directions.
BOOM!
With a single stride, the figure stepped out from under the locust tree. Against the moonlit night, its golden fur shone ever more brilliantly.
An enormous tiger head came into view, swaying leisurely from side to side before fixing its gaze on the young man’s figure ten zhang away:
"Considering the trouble you went through to run all the way here, I can give you a chance to become my slave."
"So, kneel and show me your loyalty!"
"..."
Wu Chen’s eyes lowered slightly. Though he was suppressing his shock that the opponent was indeed a Tiger Demon, just as he’d thought, he ignored it and looked at the girl in his arms.
Perhaps because the Tiger Demon’s attention was now focused on him, the burning heat of Sun Yuting’s body lessened somewhat, but her mind was still lost, and her body was limp as a noodle.
’Looks like this mark is related to the Tiger Demon before me.’
Wu Chen bent down and gently placed the girl on the ground, his hand, filled with cold qi, caressing her crimson cheek.
Seeing her eyes flutter open a little, he said gently:
"Just hold on a little longer. I’ll be quick."
Sun Yuting’s voice was weak. "Don’t worry about me. Do what you need to do. I can take it."
Hearing her say this, Wu Chen straightened up.
His eyes calmly fell on the multicolored fur and the enormous, terrifying tiger head not far away. His five fingers were already gripping the hilt of the blade at his waist, and the aura around him surged instantly.
"Brat, it seems you’re testing what little patience I have!"
Watching the young man’s provocative actions, the Tiger Demon’s eyes filled with coldness, its voice thick with uncontrollable rage:
"I hope that when I’m gnawing on your entrails later, you’re still able to maintain this composure before you stop breathing..."
"You’re noisy."
Wu Chen’s unhurried voice cut off the Tiger Demon’s rambling. With a SHING, his right hand drew his blade, but at the same instant, he threw the scabbard from his left hand. It flew with a ferocious WHOOSH, hurtling toward the figure beside the Tiger Demon.
"You..."
The figure was clearly stunned. He hadn’t expected the young man to be so devious—instead of clashing with the Tiger Demon, he came after him first!
But while his reaction was a beat too slow, the Tiger Demon’s was not. In an instant, its thick, leathery wings, devoid of fur, shot out to block the figure beside it.
It blocked the scabbard’s attack.
PSSH!
But it was followed by the sound of blood spraying, a wave of warmth from behind the wing, and a searing pain of being torn that shot through its mind.
The Tiger Demon whipped its head around, its eyes wide with disbelief.
It saw that its two-inch-thick fleshy wing had actually been smashed open by the scabbard!
And the figure behind it had been run through the chest by the scabbard, as dead as could be!
"HAAH!"
Frustrated by the first exchange, the Tiger Demon’s eyes blazed with fury. It whipped its head back toward the young man, wanting nothing more than to swallow him whole to vent its current displeasure.
But when the Tiger Demon turned to look, it saw the young man’s figure growing larger and larger in its eyes, already filling its entire field of vision.
And the black blade in the young man’s hand, at that very moment, was plummeting down toward the Tiger Demon’s enormous head!
