Chapter 406: Chapter 362: Joining the Town Martial Department, Commanding the Left and Right Guards

"Alright, your mother and I will be waiting to follow you to the New District and enjoy a good life, all thanks to you!"

Tears streamed down Liu Hongmei’s face.

And yet, a faint smile hung on her face.

After she finished speaking, she didn’t forget to shoot a glance back at Lin Dazhi.

The look seemed to say.

’In the end, we still have to rely on Lin Yu.’

How could Lin Dazhi not understand what she meant?

Ever since Lin Yi had left.

In just one year, half of Lin Dazhi’s hair had turned white.

He had completely lost all standing in the family.

Liu Hongmei constantly criticized him, both to his face and through subtle digs.

She resented Lin Yi for going to the New District without taking them along.

For a whole year, this left Lin Dazhi unable to hold his head high at home.

It got to the point where he didn’t even want to go home after getting off work in the evening.

If it weren’t for the demonic beasts rampaging through the Old District, with danger lurking everywhere after dark, he would have rather just stayed outside by himself...

Finally, after much hardship, a new policy was announced.

Families with relatives attending university in the New District could apply for one chance to take the martial exam early.

This was basically a bonus opportunity.

Even if they didn’t pass, it wouldn’t matter.

They could just wait until their senior year of high school to take the martial exam as scheduled.

In other words, they got an extra chance to take the martial exam.

It was a way to gauge their own abilities and see where they stood.

Lin Dazhi understood what Liu Hongmei had meant by her words.

He also understood the meaning behind her glance. He smiled and said, "If it weren’t for this new policy, Xiaoyu would have had to wait another year. But now that we have this chance, we have to grab it!"

"Treat this as your only shot at the martial exam. Do everything you can to pass!"

The moment he spoke, Liu Hongmei shot him another glance.

’How could I not understand what he’s implying? If it weren’t for Lin Yi attending university in the New District, Lin Yu would have had to wait another year.’

"Yes, Dad, don’t worry. I’ll work as hard as I can. I definitely won’t waste this opportunity!"

"It’s just... the martial exam registration fee is fifty thousand!" Lin Yu added in a low voice.

Hearing this, Lin Dazhi’s brow furrowed. "How much? Fifty thousand? Why did the price go up again?"

"Last year when Lin Yi took his martial exam, it was only thirty thousand!"

Making a living in the Old District was much harder than in the New District.

Jobs were hard to find, and wages hovered around two thousand a month.

After covering food, drink, and other living expenses, there was really nothing left.

If he and Liu Hongmei didn’t both have jobs, their small family of three would have found it nearly impossible to get by.

"Fifty thousand it is, then. Xiaoyu is our family’s only hope now.

Whether we can move to the New District and live a better life in the future all depends on Xiaoyu!"

"Xiaoyu, don’t you worry about the money. Just focus on your training and stay in peak condition!"

"On the day of the martial exam, all that matters is that you perform steadily!" Liu Hongmei said to Lin Yu.

Hearing this, Lin Yu nodded. "Dad, Mom, don’t worry. I’ll give it my all!"

A gratified smile appeared on Liu Hongmei’s face when she heard him say that.

...

「The next day.」

In Old He’s office at the Town Martial Department.

Lin Yi’s arrival didn’t surprise Old He in the slightest.

In fact, he had been expecting him.

On the other hand, the fact that Zhou Qi, Sun Tao, and Shen Mengyi had chosen to return to school did take Old He by surprise.

After all, joining the Town Martial Department was a dream come true for countless people.

The Town Martial Department’s status was a cut above that of the Demon Hunting Bureau.

Its benefits and salary were also better.

It was just that the requirements to join were extremely high, demanding that candidates pass multiple layers of assessments.

And now Old He was offering them a shortcut.

They could join the Town Martial Department directly, no assessments required.

He had thought that Zhou Qi and Sun Tao would unhesitatingly choose to follow Lin Yi.

Who would have thought...

"I told them to go back to school," Lin Yi said with a faint smile. "It’s enough for me to be the one joining the Town Martial Department. There’s no need to drag them all into this."

Old He gave him a profound look and nodded. "You’re worried they would be in danger, aren’t you?"

Lin Yi nodded but said nothing more.

"Alright. You’re a responsible man, thinking of your friends like that.

On that point alone, I know I wasn’t wrong about you!"

"Lin Yi, once you join the Town Martial Department, the weight on your shoulders will be even heavier!"

"You’d better be sure about this. It’s not too late to back out!"

Old He looked at Lin Yi, his gaze solemn.

He was offering a final warning.

Lin Yi nodded. "Elder He, if I hadn’t thought this through, I wouldn’t be here today!"

"Very well. Since you’ve made up your mind, I won’t say any more!"

"Xiaodie, take them to complete the onboarding process!"

"Afterwards, gather all the captains of the Left and Right Guards and have them meet the General Director!"

"And while you’re at it, explain to them the differences between the Left and Right Guards!"

"Yes, Elder He!"

Meng Die nodded and led Lin Yi and Wei Nan out of the office.

After leaving the office, they headed directly to another room.

This place was like a corporate HR department, its main purpose being to process new recruits.

There were forms to fill out regarding things like salary, benefits, and the monthly allotment of cultivation resources.

The salary, benefits, and cultivation resources all varied depending on the position.

When Wei Nan saw the details.

His jaw nearly hit the floor. "HOLY SHIT! A monthly salary of hundreds of thousands? An annual salary in the millions?!"

Meng Die shot him a smiling glance. "For a Martial Artist, things like salary are secondary!"
