Chapter 187: Chu Tian is Dead

Chapter 187: Chapter 187: Chu Tian is Dead

Chu Tian looked at Xu Qingsui with a blank expression, still unable to understand everyone’s attitude toward him. Keeping his gaze fixed on her, he slowly raised a hand to touch his cheek.

"There’s nothing on my face..."

Before Chu Tian could finish his sentence, his hand suddenly froze against his skin. A sticky sensation spread beneath his fingers. His heart skipped a beat, and he slowly brought his hand before his eyes.

A smear of crimson instantly filled his vision. He stiffened and immediately stumbled, only managing to stay upright because the nearby medical staff caught him.

"What’s wrong with me? This must be someone else’s blood I accidentally touched earlier, right?!"

The thick metallic scent rushed up his nose. It was impossible not to know what was on his hand, but he refused to associate it with himself. Seeing him like this, everyone present sighed silently.

"I saw it the moment I laid eyes on you earlier," Xu Qingsui said softly. "Although I don’t know why you aren’t bleeding profusely, your bone is already visible through the wound..."

"Impossible! Guide Xu, what kind of joke are you playing?!" Chu Tian interrupted her agitatedly before she could finish.

Whether it was from his intense agitation or something else, the moment the words left his mouth, his head began to spin. He shook his head vigorously, trying to clear his mind, only to find his legs turning to jelly. The medics beside him had to exert all their strength to hold him up and keep him from collapsing to the floor.

Looking at his stubborn demeanor, tears welled up in the eyes of several bystanders. They fought hard to hold them back. Xu Qingsui’s brows furrowed tightly. She wanted to stop him but didn’t know how to speak.

"Guide Xu, I’m perfectly alive and kicking right now! How could you joke about something like this? I respect you a lot now, but if you make a joke like this again, don’t blame me for getting angry." Firmly believing that the blood on his face had only rubbed off from somewhere else, Chu Tian glared angrily in response to her explanation.

Seeing his displeasure, Xu Qingsui didn’t get angry; instead, a wave of sorrow washed over her. At this moment, Chu Tian was nothing more than a man desperately wanting to live. But life was fragile and always fraught with regrets. And someone always had to pierce through the illusions to reveal the cruel truth.

"I’m not joking with you," she said gently. "I don’t want to see this happen either, but it’s the reality. As for why you don’t feel anything, the professionals should be the ones to explain."

The forced smile finally froze on Chu Tian’s face. His head grew heavier and heavier, but he pushed through it to look at the medical staff.

"Captain Chu," a medic began, "the weapon that pierced you was extremely sharp, which is why you didn’t feel much pain. Additionally, because the situation was so critical, your attention was entirely focused on others, which further suppressed your pain receptors.

"As for why you’ve been so full of energy, that was your brain’s final command. The resulting surge of adrenaline has been sustaining you all this time."

As the captain of the Survival Team, Chu Tian naturally understood what the medics were saying. But upon processing those words, he could finally hold on no longer. His head dropped, and all signs of life left him completely.

This scene cast another heavy silence over everyone present. With incredibly heavy hearts, the medical staff laid him on the ground. One of them took off their own white coat to cover Chu Tian’s body.

Having just received guide treatment, Shen Yan was supposed to remain in a deep sleep for a while. However, the moment Chu Tian breathed his last, Shen Yan slowly opened his eyes as if sensing something. The first thing he saw was Chu Tian’s corpse covered by the white coat.

Although he couldn’t see the face, his heart sank, and an overwhelming sense of unease surged within him.

"Who is it?" he rasped out with great difficulty.

Only then did the crowd, still immersed in the sorrow of Chu Tian’s death, realize that Shen Yan had awoken. Everyone turned in unison to look at Xu Qingsui, hoping she would be the one to answer him.

Xu Qingsui frowned. She wondered why she had suddenly become their designated mouthpiece. She had let it slide once just now, but this time, it wasn’t her turn to speak.

Seeing her remain silent, the medic who had stepped up earlier finally answered, "Mr. Shen, Captain Chu is gone."

Hearing this, Shen Yan jolted, and fragments of memories began flashing through his mind.

After entering his Frenzy state, he had locked his weapon onto both the squad members and the Mutants in front of him. Right as he made his move, Chu Tian had suddenly rushed out to stop him, but in the end, the longsword...

A splitting pain tore through Shen Yan’s head. Unable to endure any longer, his eyes rolled back, and he passed out once more.

Seeing Shen Yan faint again, the crowd gasped in alarm. Xu Qingsui, however, simply stared at him without making a move.

The wound on Chu Tian’s face was clearly caused by a sharp weapon, and the doctor had explicitly stated that it must have been extremely sharp. In that chaotic situation, the only people capable of wounding someone with such a weapon were the lab staff and the Sentinels controlling the scene. When Shen Yan went berserk, these people hadn’t even had time to flee, let alone fight back. It naturally couldn’t have been them who accidentally wounded him.

That left only one possibility.

Witnessing Shen Yan’s reaction upon hearing of Chu Tian’s death confirmed to Xu Qingsui that her guess was right. Even though it wasn’t intentional, Shen Yan had indeed killed Chu Tian. And not just Chu Tian—many others had died or been injured by his hands.

Moving forward, whenever he woke up again, he would likely remain in a state of profound depression for a long time.

While everyone was still mourning Chu Tian’s passing, a series of violent crashes erupted from within the laboratory building.

Xu Qingsui suddenly remembered that Lu Jingyu was still inside and immediately dashed toward it. With so many Mutants rioting at once, Lu Jingyu wouldn’t have an easy time dealing with them.

Inside, Lu Jingyu’s half-red, half-black weapon, Tan Lang, continuously danced through the air, slaughtering the Mutants at his feet. But even so, he had been forced to utilize his Frenzy Power. By now, dark, vein-like patterns had already crept up to his shoulders.

Perhaps not wanting to drag the battle out any longer, Lu Jingyu suddenly injected his Frenzy Power into Tan Lang. As a dark aura flooded the blade of the Greed Sword, his own body was also enveloped in a layer of black mist.

Xu Qingsui’s brows tightened. She immediately pushed her way through the chaotic crowd, rushing back into the laboratory building.

The empowered Tan Lang carved an arc of sword light in midair, flying directly into the rioting horde of Mutants. Any Mutant touched by the sword light was instantly sliced in half, losing all signs of life.

Lu Jingyu had unleashed a lethal strike. Mutants fell in swathes, but he was also affected by the exertion; a faint mist slowly clouded his eyes. His movements grew a fraction stiffer, betraying a hint of confusion.

Noticing this, the surrounding squad members immediately paled in panic.

Shen Yan’s earlier Frenzy had already rendered him unable to distinguish friend from foe, resulting in the deaths and injuries of many of their own people. That crisis had only just been resolved. If Lu Jingyu also went into a Frenzy, the consequences would be unimaginable. Just making it out of here alive would become a luxury.
