Chapter 246: Chapter 246: Modifying Memories
Their failure to end up together as childhood sweethearts had always left a deep sense of regret in both of them. To make up for this, they had harbored the idea of uniting their children in marriage. All of this had been premeditated. The two constantly expressed their mutual yearning through letters, and there were even a few times when Shen Zhiqiu went to visit Su Qing’er.
Shen Yan thought back carefully. During those times, Shen Zhiqiu had used business trips as an excuse to leave, and his mother had even personally packed his luggage for his long journeys. As it turned out, Shen Zhiqiu had been going off to fool around with his childhood sweetheart.
Shen Yan wasn’t too stubborn when it came to romance. He supported the pursuit of true love, but on the condition that it didn’t hurt anyone else. If Shen Zhiqiu had only confessed early on and given up his marriage to follow his childhood sweetheart, Shen Yan wouldn’t have held it against him. But now, he no longer wanted to acknowledge this selfish man as his father.
"Somebody, destroy everything in here, including the fixtures! Destroy it all!" Shen Yan’s hatred had reached its peak. Every single thing in this room was an eyesore to him.
Xu Qingsui and Lu Jingyu, standing to the side, sighed emotionally. Seeing Shen Yan issue the order, they placed the letters in their hands back onto the table. These letters were probably the things he wanted destroyed the most.
Shen Yan remained silent, watching as his men destroyed everything in the room. Only at the very end did he stand up and personally wreck the sofa he had just been sitting on.
"Let’s go!" Shen Yan finally said, his face devoid of any expression.
However, just as the three of them were about to leave, a subordinate ran over holding a notebook.
"Mr. Shen, we found this! You’d better take a look."
Xu Qingsui glanced at it. It looked like a diary or journal of some sort. The notebook was a tender shade of pink, so it likely belonged to Su Qing’er.
Shen Yan cast a fleeting glance at it, a hint of disgust flashing in his eyes. After a moment of hesitation, he reached out and took it. He flipped the notebook open, scanned a few lines, and his brows immediately knitted into a tight frown.
Xu Qingsui was incredibly curious about what was written inside, so she couldn’t help but crane her neck to peek.
"Heh! It really is instant karma!" Shen Yan suddenly sneered, handing the notebook straight to Xu Qingsui.
Xu Qingsui took it and began reading. Soon, her expression turned exceedingly strange. The corners of her mouth twitched upwards involuntarily, and her effort to suppress a smile was almost comical.
SNAP!
Closing the diary, Xu Qingsui hesitated for a moment before passing it to Lu Jingyu. This was true, unadulterated instant karma, and she simply couldn’t resist sharing it.
The notebook was Su Qing’er’s diary, which documented the real circumstances behind her departure back then. Although she and Shen Zhiqiu were childhood sweethearts, who wouldn’t want to climb the social ladder? So, when a young master of the Liang family in the Imperial City took a liking to her, she had been tempted. However, given their years of affection, she would surely bear the brunt of public condemnation if she simply walked away. After much deliberation, she devised that scheme to make Shen Zhiqiu the villain, allowing her to exit the stage in grief and indignation while earning everyone’s sympathy.
But after her plan was successfully executed and she went to the Imperial City, she discovered that things weren’t as she had imagined. Her husband was indeed a young master of the Liang family in the Imperial City, but he was merely an unpresentable illegitimate son. She thought she had successfully latched onto the Liang family, but in reality, all she gained was an empty title. Upon learning the truth, she burned with fury, but it was too late for regrets. In her diary, she poured all her rage into written words.
During this time, she thought of Shen Zhiqiu again, but she didn’t know how to reach out to him. It wasn’t until she heard the news of Shen Zhiqiu’s impending marriage that she could no longer control herself, writing her first letter to him. To win Shen Zhiqiu’s affection and pity, she deliberately fabricated lies, completely wrapping his heart around her little finger. Thus, the two of them kept Zhang Yuqing and the Liang family in the dark, secretly rekindling their illicit affair.
Su Qing’er continued to write in the diary for a while after that, mainly describing her nervousness and fear during that period, worried that their secret would be exposed. But as time went on, she had long forgotten what fear was, and the diary entries came to an abrupt halt.
Now, everything from beginning to end was connected. The most vicious and calculating one of all was Su Qing’er. Although Shen Zhiqiu had also been deceived, the things he had done were simply unforgivable. Now that both of them had ended up dead in the wilderness, it was as if even God couldn’t stand it anymore and had taken their lives.
Throughout this entire ordeal, Zhang Yuqing was the most pitiful one. Simply because she loved a man, she had thrown away her entire life. Knowing all this and recalling Zhang Yuqing’s past actions, Xu Qingsui found she couldn’t even bring herself to hate the woman anymore.
After flipping through the pages, Lu Jingyu handed the notebook back to Shen Yan with a dark expression. Shen Yan tossed the notebook directly into the rising flames and led the other two away.
"Mr. Shen, Mrs. Shen found out about what happened to the old Mr. Shen! The shock caused her to faint!"
Before they could even get into the car, a servant ran over to report anxiously. Shen Yan’s body trembled, and he immediately ordered them to head back to the Shen family’s home. Since she had fainted, Xu Qingsui and Lu Jingyu took the initiative to follow him back.
But by the time they returned to the Shen family’s home, Zhang Yuqing had already woken up. However, because of the massive shock, she had completely lost her mind. She was kicking and screaming in the house, crying one second and laughing the next, suffering a total mental breakdown.
Before they arrived, a doctor had already examined her. Learning that Shen Zhiqiu had eloped with Su Qing’er and that they were both murdered had been an enormous blow to Zhang Yuqing. The chances of her recovery were exceedingly slim. Seeing the state she was in, Xu Qingsui even began to pity her.
After discussing the situation with the doctor, Shen Yan arranged for the servants to take care of Zhang Yuqing around the clock.
Just then, Xu Qingsui suddenly called out to stop him. "Perhaps I can give it a try!"
Just a moment ago, the Golden Octopus had appeared. It told Xu Qingsui that she could try developing her new ability.
"As long as the host seals away the memory that drove her mad so she is no longer affected, she will be able to return to normal."
Shen Yan looked at Xu Qingsui in astonishment. A hint of doubt lingered in his eyes, but he was already tempted by the idea. Zhang Yuqing was his mother. How could his heart not ache for her? Of course he hoped she could recover.
"Mr. Shen, given Mrs. Shen’s current condition, there is no other way besides slow and steady treatment. If we try any reckless methods, I’m afraid it might worsen Mrs. Shen’s condition.
"If something goes wrong during the process, it might truly become impossible for her to recover," the doctor interjected. Xu Qingsui’s words had made him feel that his authority was being challenged, so he couldn’t help but step forward and voice his objections.
But Xu Qingsui ignored him completely. Staring intently at Shen Yan, she said, "I can work on her spirit body to make her forget this memory. Then, she won’t be triggered anymore."
