Chapter 745: Chapter 745: Severe Injuries
Evelyn Ford scrambled to her feet. A sob caught in her throat, her eyes stinging fiercely. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. She sprinted toward the figure as fast as she could, heedless of how much carbon ash she inhaled, her own heart pounding violently in her chest. Twenty meters, ten meters, five meters...
Finally, she grabbed his hand.
"I’m sorry, I’m late."
Evelyn was pulled into a warm embrace. She whimpered and shook her head, her tears soaking the fabric on Ronan Kendrick’s chest. Finally, Evelyn could hold back no longer and broke down, wailing.
"Where did you go, you bastard, you asshole? Do you have any idea how scared I was? I thought you were dead! I didn’t even want to live anymore, and only then do you show up." Evelyn vented all the panic and worry she had felt over the past few days. Ronan held her tightly. For every curse Evelyn hurled at him, he would just say, "I’m sorry."
Evelyn cried until she was exhausted, snot and tears streaming down her face. Ronan, at a loss, clumsily wiped them away for her. When he saw her eyes were swollen like walnuts, the corners of his mouth twitched into a smile.
"What the hell are you smiling at?"
"I was wrong."
"Wrong about what?"
"I shouldn’t have only shown up now. I’ve been awake for several days, but I couldn’t move for the first few. I only got a little strength back today. I smelled your scent and followed it here. Thank God you’re really here. Why don’t you save up your strength and beat me up later to vent, okay? There, there, don’t cry. You’ll get ash in your eyes."
After he finished speaking, Ronan pulled her hand toward him. Her wrist was no longer bleeding, but the gash was so large that the flesh was peeling back, a ghastly and horrifying sight.
"Silly."
Evelyn gave him a playful glare. "Well, I’m not dead, am I? I’m hard to kill. Even a fall from ten thousand feet couldn’t do me in."
Evelyn focused her thoughts, pulling a medical kit and a bucket of clean water from her space. She had no strength left. Her injuries were so severe that her vitality was too low, making it incredibly taxing to retrieve anything from the space.
For some reason, Ronan could no longer retrieve items from the space. Evelyn suspected the only reason they had both survived was that her space had activated a protective mechanism during the crash and explosion. Since Evelyn was the space’s owner and intrinsically bound to it, she could still use it. Ronan, however, had been completely severed from it.
A moment ago, while retrieving the items, Evelyn had checked on the state of her space. Everything in the storage area was still there, but the livestock in the husbandry zone had all entered a state of hibernation. The space no longer had a day-night cycle; besides the storage area, all other zones were plunged into darkness. When Evelyn tried to send her consciousness inside, she was forcefully ejected.
At any rate, she could still retrieve and use the items in the storage area, so Evelyn didn’t dwell on the state of her space. After Ronan gave himself a quick wash, the full extent of the injuries on his body was revealed.
"What’s wrong with your leg? I thought you had a powerful healing ability. Why are you covered in so many wounds?"
Ronan stared back at her. "The injury on your back is worse than mine. You haven’t treated it at all these past few days?"
"I took a few of the high-potency pills, but I guess my injuries were too severe this time, and they didn’t work very well. Besides, I was desperate to find you. Who had time to worry about treating wounds?"
Ronan opened the medical kit and motioned for Evelyn to turn around so he could treat her back. Evelyn laughed and cursed at his sharp nose; even though she was completely bundled up in her protective suit, he had still managed to smell the blood and pus from her wound.
The burns on Evelyn’s back crisscrossed in a terrible mess. Her clothes had adhered to the wounds, and peeling them off tore at her flesh, making Evelyn cry out in agony.
Ronan worked quickly. By the time he had finished bandaging Evelyn’s wounds, he was panting with exhaustion. His body felt like it had reached its absolute limit. Overcome with fatigue, he could no longer support himself. Just as he was about to fall, Evelyn swiftly caught him in her arms.
"Ronan, what’s wrong?"
"I’m fine. Just a little tired. Let me rest for a bit. I’ll be better soon."
Though worried, Evelyn forced herself to remain calm. She pulled the bottle of high-potency pills from her pocket and quickly had Ronan take three.
After several more attempts, she finally managed to retrieve the Unimog.
"Ronan, let’s get into the truck. Try to stay with me. Don’t fall asleep, okay? I’ll help you inside."
They struggled into the truck. Evelyn immediately helped Ronan onto the bed. The dust outside was thick, so she quickly closed the door. Thankfully, the truck was fully equipped, so she wouldn’t need to take anything else from her space for now.
"I’m really fine. A little dizzy, my limbs feel weak. I’ll be fine after some rest." He had forced himself to hold on just long enough to find Evelyn. He didn’t look too bad, but in truth, his internal and external injuries were dozens of times more severe than hers.
"Okay, I know. You can sleep for a while now. We’re safe in the truck."
Ronan nodded. "Stay here with me."
"I’ll stay with you. Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere."
After Ronan fell asleep, Evelyn changed her clothes and also changed Ronan into a fresh set. For every minute of work she did, she had to rest for three just to recover. Once they were both cleaned up, Evelyn busied herself in the kitchen.
After setting some millet porridge to simmer, Evelyn went to the other bed, lay down, and passed out.
When she woke up again, Ronan was sitting by the bed, watching her.
"Why don’t you sleep a little longer?"
Ronan brought the millet porridge over and began to feed her. "I’ve slept enough, and I’ve recovered about twenty percent of my strength. Eat this first. I’ll change your dressings afterward."
"Your dressings need to be changed, too. I tended to your wounds earlier, but I didn’t have the strength, so it was a pretty rough job."
Ronan smiled. "I recover quickly. Don’t worry about me."
With both of them feeling much better, Evelyn gazed out the window, her eyes filled with uncertainty.
"Ronan, do you think we’re still in Oakhaven?"
"Hard to say. The terrain here is strange. The ground is pitted and cratered, with deep fissures. As far as the eye can see, there are only rocks and mounds of dirt. If we were still near Mount Grol in Oakhaven, there should be high mountains and trees. Forget trees, there isn’t even a single blade of withered grass here."
"When the plane was hit by the fireballs, it was caught by some kind of force and sent flipping through the air. All the equipment in the cockpit failed instantly. The plane caught fire and crashed in a very short amount of time. I tried to grab you, but my body was frozen stiff. At that exact moment, a force like a black hole sucked me, you, and the plane right in."
Hearing Ronan’s account only raised more questions in Evelyn’s mind.
"Ronan... do you think anyone else from the cabin... is still alive?"
"I didn’t see anyone else on my way here. No bodies, either. We most likely survived because the space protected us. As for the others... it’s hard to say."
Evelyn sighed. "I wonder how the base is... The compass doesn’t work anymore. And I have a suspicion... that the fireballs fell everywhere, all across Azure, without distinction."
’In other words, the entirety of Azure might have become a wasteland.’
Ronan agreed with her guess. "Whatever the case, our priority is to rest and build up our strength. We can only plan our next move after our injuries have healed."
