Magic Space: Struggling to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 755: Underground Warehouse

Chapter 755: Chapter 755: Underground Warehouse

"This is my bowl! Give it back! My bowl!" A child knelt on the ground, clinging tightly to a man’s leg and begging for his bowl back. The man kicked the child away, wiped the charcoal dust from the bowl, and spat disdainfully on the ground.

"You little mutt. When I say this bowl is mine, it’s mine. Scram if you know what’s good for you, or I’ll kick you to death."

"You can’t take my bowl. It’s the only thing I have. Please, just give it back to me. I’m begging you."

The child crawled over and grabbed the man’s pant leg again, his cries heart-wrenching. But the man showed no mercy, kicking the boy away once more. The people nearby watched with numb expressions; they had no energy to meddle in others’ affairs. The boy struggled to his feet. The man, growing impatient, walked over and raised his foot to kick the child in the head. But before his foot could connect, he himself went flying like a puppet with its strings cut.

"ARGH..." The man curled up on the ground, howling in pain.

Evelyn Ford retracted her leg and walked over to the child. The boy, who had been kicked twice, was already coughing up blood. Still, his mind was on the bowl that had fallen from the man’s grasp. He struggled to crawl over and clutch it tightly to his chest.

"Which son of a bitch ambushed me? Show yourself!"

Evelyn Ford stepped forward, brought her foot down on the man’s hand, and said, "Your grandpa’s right here."

"You bitch! Let go of me! Believe it or not, I’ll kill you."

Evelyn Ford ground her foot down hard, and the man immediately started screaming in agony.

"Stealing a kid’s bowl and beating him up? You think you’re hot stuff, huh?"

"I’ll give it back! I don’t want it anymore!"

Evelyn Ford lifted her foot and kicked him hard in the waist. "Coward. Weren’t you acting so tough just now? Why don’t you want it anymore?"

She unleashed all the frustration she’d been holding in for the past few days on this man. Seeing her beat him, the bystanders quickly scattered, afraid of getting caught in the crossfire. The man had been beaten to a pulp by Evelyn Ford. Only when she saw he was still breathing did she let him be.

"Hey, kid. You alright?"

Evelyn Ford looked at the child clutching the bowl. There were still traces of blood on his mouth. The boy looked to be only seven or eight years old, with no shoes on his feet and clothes that were nothing but rags. Aside from his teeth and eyeballs, he was so caked in filth from head to toe that you couldn’t make out his original features.

Hearing Evelyn Ford’s question, the child’s gaze fell on the barely conscious man. Evelyn blocked his view.

"Is he dead?"

"No."

The child nodded. "Thank you."

"You’re welcome. Are you okay?"

The child nodded again. Then, he got to his feet, staggered twice, and stumbled away, clutching his bowl.

Evelyn Ford kicked the man to the side. Seeing how vicious she was, the passersby trembled in fear.

Evelyn Ford noticed the pots, bowls, and basins in their hands, all filled with Famine Clay Soil. They must have dug it up from upstream. Two years ago, the base had informed everyone that there was a patch of kaolin by the upstream lake. Kaolin, also known as Famine Clay Soil, was difficult to swallow, but eating it could keep you alive.

"Let’s go." The two continued onward until they reached the location of the base’s warehouse. All the buildings here had collapsed. Seeing the vast expanse of ruins, Evelyn Ford felt a headache coming on.

"If Rhys Chase and the others are really inside, we’ll have to clear all this rubble to get them out."

’How long is it going to take to clear this huge pile of rubble?’

Seeing that no one was around, Evelyn Ford placed her hand on a concrete block. The block was absorbed into her space, and the pile of rubble instantly shrank.

"Ronan, I’ll clear the rubble here. You go check the buildings that are still standing. Maybe they’re hiding in one of them."

Ronan Kendrick was reluctant. "No. I’m not splitting up with you."

"What if we clear this whole area and they’re not down there? It’s best if we split up. Don’t worry, I’m always on alert. If anyone comes, I’ll just pretend I’m rummaging through the debris."

Ronan Kendrick glanced at his own hands. ’I’m so useless.’ He could no longer absorb things with Evelyn anymore. She had to do all this exhausting work by herself. He was frustrated. Although he didn’t want to leave her side, he followed her instructions and went to search the standing buildings.

After Ronan Kendrick left, Evelyn Ford found a more secluded spot and continued absorbing the concrete blocks and steel bars from the ruins.

An hour later, Ronan Kendrick returned.

"I checked all the buildings. Didn’t see them."

Evelyn Ford quickly pulled a bottle of water from her space and handed it to him. "You worked hard. It looks like there’s an eighty percent chance they’re in the warehouse."

"Ronan, you rest for a bit, then stand guard for me. I’ll clear this section, and the entrance to the underground warehouse should be revealed."

After finishing the water, Ronan Kendrick placed the plastic bottle in a conspicuous spot. If someone saw it, they could easily take it and use it.

"I’m not tired."

"I’m not tired either, but be my lookout. When you’re not here, I’m on pins and needles, worried someone might show up."

Evelyn Ford was full of energy. It wasn’t just about finding Rhys Chase and his group. If she could open the underground warehouse, the grain inside could be brought out, and the survivors at the base would have food to eat.

She ignored the scrapes on her hands and feet that were drawing blood, focusing single-mindedly on clearing the rubble. Fortunately, at this time of day, everyone was out fighting for water or digging for soil, so no one came to scavenge here. However, in the next second, Evelyn Ford’s smile vanished.

Because after clearing away more than half of the debris, she saw numerous bodies crushed underneath.

Ronan Kendrick asked Evelyn Ford for some black plastic bags. He put on gloves and a mask, and, not minding the filth, went straight over to put the bodies in the bags.

Evelyn Ford looked at the bodies, troubled. "Ronan, what should we do with them?"

"Let’s just leave them here for now. They’re already decomposing. It’s unlikely anyone will come and try to do anything with them."

Evelyn Ford nodded, and the two continued their work. From this small area alone, Evelyn cleared out a total of twenty-eight bodies. Once that was done, the location of the underground warehouse was exposed. Ronan Kendrick was very familiar with this place. He found the floor panel for the entrance, pried it open, and two iron trapdoors appeared before them. Opening the trapdoors, the two of them slowly went inside.

It was pitch-black inside. Evelyn Ford quickly took out two flashlights. Just as she turned them on, Ronan Kendrick grabbed her arm.

"Someone’s here. Alive."

Evelyn Ford’s eyes lit up. ’Great!’

But neither of them let down their guard. If it wasn’t Rhys Chase and his group, they could be in great danger, as there was a lot of food and weaponry inside.

Ronan Kendrick walked in front with Evelyn Ford following behind. Holding their breath, they descended the stairs and came to the first door of the underground warehouse. The door was barred from the inside; they couldn’t get in unless they took it down.

Ronan Kendrick took out a whistle. He blew a few notes in a sequence that only Rhys Chase would know. Half a minute later, footsteps sounded from within.

The door opened from the inside with a CLANG, and an excited voice immediately followed.

"Ronan! You’re finally here."
