Chapter 494: Chapter 488: Besiege and Kill 3
Song You’ai was fuming over the girl repeatedly asking her daughter, "Why aren’t you dead yet?"
The girl had a loose tongue and had cursed her precious daughter several times now. Even a saint would have lost their temper.
So when she heard Chen Chong’s question, she just shot him a cold glance and replied in an official tone, "We came from the Capital to help you, but we have very limited food and water. Ultimately, you need to rely on yourselves. You can’t depend on others for everything."
Chen Jiajia was not happy to hear this. "I know you, too. Stop acting so high and mighty. I see you’re just abusing your authority for personal reasons and don’t want to give us any supplies."
"You came from the Capital, so the base must have given you food supplies. You’re just using your position to settle a personal score! We’re all people waiting to be rescued, so how come they get food and we don’t? What is this if not blatant favoritism?"
"Who made the rule that we have to provide supplies when we rescue people? You? Is that your rule, missy?" Song You’ai retorted sarcastically. "It’s been over a year since the apocalypse began. Are you still living in a dream? Wake up."
"We’re only responsible for keeping you from dying," Song Youzhi cut in, his face cold. "After all, our mission is to rescue victims. As long as we bring you back breathing, it boosts our performance stats!"
"Exactly." Song You’ai laughed, exasperated. "We’re counting on your headcount to meet our quota! So please don’t kick the bucket halfway there and make trouble for us."
"Get inside!" Zhai Ruobai waved his hand. "And be mindful of your protective gear."
Chen Jiajia was absolutely livid and about to start another argument with Song You’ai when her father grabbed her, making her stumble.
She whipped her head around, her expression full of resentment. "Dad, why did you pull me?"
Chen Chong glared at her, his expression one of pure exasperation. "Can you just talk a little less?"
’He knew perfectly well that Xie Ning and her mother were not people to be messed with, yet his daughter kept running headfirst into the line of fire.’
’If she hadn’t been so rude to them from the very beginning, would they be in this situation now, without even a sip of water to drink?’
Chen Jiajia’s temper flared. "They’re supposed to be rescuing people! But now they’re ranking us, and the supplies aren’t even being distributed properly. I’m not going with them."
Every member of the Starfire Team treated Miss Chen as if she were invisible, walking right past her without so much as a glance.
’Fine, stay here then if you don’t want to come. It’s not like they were begging her to join them. How ridiculous.’
"Shut up," Chen Chong snapped, hitting his daughter in a fit of exasperation.
’He had truly spoiled this daughter of his. Even now, she still couldn’t grasp the reality of the situation.’
Song You’ai’s group entered the workshop and immediately spotted a person lying in the corner. Beside them, leaning against a window, sat a row of sallow-faced, utterly exhausted men and women.
"Old Zhu!" Huang Genmei was the first to cry out.
An utterly exhausted man slowly lifted his head, his gaze gradually focusing. He managed to struggle to his feet. "Sister... Sister Huang? Zhongping, Xiao Ye, what are you all doing here?"
The man gave a bitter smile and shook his head at them. "The door to the lab next door is completely sealed. It requires an iris scan and other security measures."
"Without passing the verification, we can’t break down that heavy metal door. It’s useless. We’ve completely run out of options."
At a glance, Song You’ai clearly saw her brother-in-law, Xie Xueli, sitting nearby.
Compared to the spirited Doctor Xie from before the apocalypse, the man now looked haggard and gaunt, his eyes sunken deep into their sockets.
After a moment’s thought, Song You’ai called out, "Xue Li."
Xie Xueli had been sitting in a listless daze. Suddenly hearing his name, he looked up blankly and his eyes met Song You’ai’s.
Compared to refugees like himself, the group before him, led by Song You’ai, was dressed in full protective gear. Their eyes were bright and sharp, and they were equipped with everything from masks to goggles.
It was as if this damned apocalypse had left no mark of its desolation upon them whatsoever.
For a moment, Xie Xueli didn’t even recognize who this woman with the well-proportioned figure and familiar voice was...
"Sister... Sister-in-law?" Xie Xueli asked tentatively.
Song You’ai didn’t remove her mask or goggles, just nodded at him. "It’s me."
"Sister-in-law!" Xie Xueli scrambled up from the floor, his face filled with utter disbelief.
"Is it really you, Sister-in-law?" ’Was he having an auditory hallucination?’
’Why would his sister-in-law suddenly be here?’
’He remembered his sister-in-law used to work a desk job. She was a bit heavy, with a round, full face.’
’Why did her presence feel so different now?’
"It’s me, Xue Li." Song You’ai nodded slightly, unable to help but sigh as she looked at her brother-in-law.
’A perfectly fine medical professional... Look what this apocalypse had done to him.’
’Her brother-in-law had always been tall and slim, but not to the point of being reduced to skin and bones like this.’
’The way he was now, he was practically a scarecrow. It looked like a gust of wind could blow him away... ’
"Xiao Yu, go ahead and give them a check-up," Song You’ai said, turning to Yu Tianfeng.
Yu Tianfeng nodded, stepped forward with his medical kit, and smiled. "Hi everyone, I’m Yu Tianfeng."
...
"There’s an access lock on the laboratory door. They’ve been messing with it for a while but can’t get in," Cres said, jogging behind Xie Ning, Gu Chen, and Lu Wei while relaying the message through the Spirit Net.
"What do you guys think those three Alien Species are trying to do?"
"Nothing good, that’s for sure." Xie Ning didn’t know what the Alien Species were planning, but she knew that no matter what, they couldn’t be allowed to succeed.
"We kill them now," Gu Chen said with a calm expression.
’The three of them have already been taken over by a parasitic source. Right now, they’re probably nothing more than walking corpses following orders.’
’The only reason they haven’t revealed their true nature is probably because their orders are to lay low.’
"Let’s play it by ear." With that, Xie Ning led the other three in a dash toward the laboratory’s vicinity.
From the other end of the long corridor, they could see the three Alien Species pacing anxiously in front of the door.
"Did they suddenly make a move because they received an order from the X Realm?"
"It’s very likely."
Xie Ning’s group didn’t bother being stealthy and simply ran straight over.
When Xia Yuanyi turned and saw Xie Ning, Gu Chen, and the other two, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of panic.
Fortunately, Xie Ning just smiled at them with crescent eyes, seemingly not having noticed anything amiss.
"I was just asking around, and someone said you all headed for the lab. Find anything?"
Xie Ning gave an order over the Spirit Net. "Xiao Lu, you handle the two in the back."
"Got it."
Xia Yuanyi forced a smile. "Apologies. We’ve tried a few methods, but we still haven’t been able to get into the laboratory."
Xie Ning’s eyes crinkled as she gazed at them, smiling.
But the words she spoke were laced with ice.
"How did you know this was a laboratory? Before we arrived, everyone only knew this place was a medical clinic, right? Was a laboratory ever mentioned?"
Xia Yuanyi froze.
And at that very moment, Lu Wei activated his superpower. Thorny wood vines instantly shot out, ensnaring the two Alien Species behind Xia Yuanyi.
The expression on Xia Yuanyi’s face instantly twisted into a snarl.
He realized he had walked into a trap.
